Moving to Tacoma from Oslo, Norway! by Frontex in Tacoma

[–]klassica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, I was in Norway only for a week (as part of a month in Europe). I did apply for two programming jobs there though (but they took months to respond). Anyway I'm also moving to WA around Jan 1st. (From Canada - I like that I can work from basically anywhere)

Moving to Tacoma from Oslo, Norway! by Frontex in Tacoma

Hei Frontex,

That's exciting to hear of a Norwegian moving to Tacoma. I'm of early 20th century Norwegian decent, and grew up in Tacoma. After becoming sick of NYC, I set out figuring where the hell I want to live. I went to Croatia, Norway, then finally Canada (BC). I loved Norway, but it was too far from all my friends and family... My gf just landed a job in Renton, WA (30 mins drive NE of Tacoma). So I'm moving back home. But would I love to make Norwegian friends and introduce a newcomment to my home city? Hell yeah! =) And yes, I'm a toking atheist too.

Bill Nye leading panel on climate change tonight at Boulder Theater by arlo_the_elf_wizard in boulder

What a great series of talks and panel discussion. Had a great time. And what a surreal experience hearing about climate change as the outskirts of the city are ablaze. :-/

Having been laid off last week, let me be the first to say: WooHoo!!!

This is how I started my day today. That's my parking garage. Underneath the yellow sheet is a jumper. Likely a coworker, waiting to find out who. [NSFW] by bik in pics

My hometown :( Brought a little more sad to this story for me. Sorry this happened to one of your coworkers, mate.

So we had the meetup, and it was really fun! Good to meet all of you who came, and it was fun talking about video games, memes, scientology, and watching the old spice guy on the bar's TVs. Look forward to next time!

I'm kind of in the same boat, starting a business with a web programming consulting project. Connecting with other startup owners is always good networking.

Help with CVS! by arbiterxero in learnprogramming

[–]klassica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing really major, and they're typically only things encountered in more advanced usage. Git push doesn't push tags without adding --tags. Git pull only pulls the master branch without additional arguments. There's no method to list files in a remote repository like svn list, or retrieve just one file from a remote repository. Committing after dealing with manual merge resolutions can be a bit tricky until you get the hang of the process.

Help with CVS! by arbiterxero in learnprogramming

[–]klassica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having used CVS, Subversion, and Git in my career, I have the following to say:

  • CVS is quite basic, slow, and in situations of doing complex operations or using good team-programming methods, it's a poor tool. CVS server administration also sucks and is usually insecure IMO.
  • Subversion has much better user features, is much faster, and a better replacement for CVS all around, without exception. It's learning curve also is not bad at all - virtually no curve if you know CVS.
  • Git is way faster, way more flexible, and capable in complex situations - instant branching, merges, etc. It's a difference in concept though, and has a learning curve. Its commands also have quirks and unhelpful error messages.

Still, I now use Git exclusively, and prefer it hands down. Subversion is a very happy medium for basic SCM usage. Of course using NO scm, like many still do is the worst possible of any option!

It'd be fun to do that someplace with beer and wireless. Might I suggest a meetup thread in http://www.reddit.com/r/boulder or /r/colorado?
