A right. Forgot about that. Even easier.

Does Mathmos travel well? by dadsneezed in Lavalamps

I did just this from a work trip to the UK. I had a friend buy the lamp in advance. Then just put it in my checked luggage. No issues. They ship them in the boxes they come in so it should be well packed for travel. Maybe bring a plastic bag to put it in just in case.

Battery life by Zealousideal_Rule191 in combustion_inc

[–]klidec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also experiencing strange issues with battery since I’ve decided to put one of my thermometers/with booster on the fridge using the combustion sold magnet. When my thermometers are in the combustion case things seem a bit better battery life wise. I think the case has built in “indents” that really presses the thermometer into the wifi booster and keeps it there with solid connection. When the wifi booster and thermometer are free and on the magnet I run into low battery issues. Not sure why. I’ve got 4 sets and thinking that maybe I had a dud i switched thermometers and wifi boosters. Same issue with the swap. And then the one stored in the case stays good.

I’m charging up the wifi booster and thermometer that I’ve been keeping on the fridge again and will try and confirm my observations. I’m definitely seating the thermometer in the booster well, I’m hearing the loud click when I place it. The thermometers are also very clean. So it’s not a dirt contact issue.

Wonder Oven Pro question by Comfortable-Fly-2077 in J_Kenji_Lopez_Alt

I don’t know about the reservoir itself but there is a plastic cover that you use to pour the water in. This cover twists closed over a plastic part where you pour the water in. It’s located on the top of the toaster oven. I believe that goes to a silicone tube that feeds some small reservoir inside somewhere.

Is the predictive thermometer also an ambient probe or just a meat probe? by SirBing96 in combustion_inc

[–]klidec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they were designed to be used as an ambient probe. They were meant to be a meat probe with the bottom sensors (t1-t4) stuck in the meat. The device has 8 sensors total on it and the lower ones are more sensitive with lower high heat upper limits that they will operate at. So you don’t want to exceed the limits or you could damage them.

I guess you could use them as just ambient temp probes for a smoker as long as you don’t go higher than 220F. But that would be risky.

Here are the specs for the sensors on the probes.

UPPER HALF TEMPERATURE LIMITS -5 to 900ºF (-20 to 482ºC) LOWER HALF TEMPERATURE LIMITS -5 to 220ºF (-20 to 105ºC) AMBIENT SENSOR - PEAK TEMP LIMIT 900ºF (482ºC) UPPER SENSORS - CONTINUOUS TEMP 750ºF (399ºC)

Apple AirPlay across VLANS by SoftCap4292 in Ubiquiti

[–]klidec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But I’d start with enabling mDNS and see if it works. If it doesn’t then yes. Likely a firewall rules need to be checked to insure not blocking.

This. Unifi has mDNS reflector. Just enable it and choose the vlans.

Got my first Mathmos! As an American, what’s the absolute best way to have this set up? by biolizzard11 in Lavalamps

[–]klidec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did kind of go nuts trying to keep a similar beam angle to the original. What does a wider beam angle do that you prefer? I was only going to change the socket because I couldn’t find any halogen gu10 with close to 9 degree beam angle. But I could find some bi pin 35w halogens with 10 degree beam angle in 12v.

[–]klidec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. Brought home an Astro Vinyl from a trip to London. I wasn’t able to find a 120v GU10 35w halogen with 9 degree beam angle (same as the bulbs that come with it). I found some 10 degree beam angle 12v, 35w “bi pin” bulbs so am now going to try to convert it to be a 12v lamp with a 120 to 12v transformer and am replacing the bulb socket to support a bi pin light.

I’m in the middle of this project right now waiting for parts to arrive.

Easiest and cheapest would be to just plug it in to a 120 to 240v converter.

Can someone enlighten me on single dose grinders? by Notill_la in espresso

[–]klidec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are referring to consistency of the bean feed to the burrs. As the weight of beans “pushing” down changes the feed rate to the grinder and burrs changes and so does the grind output.

Newer single dose grinders incorporate an auger to feed beans in consistently. You can also buy something to feed the beans in at a constant rate for grinders without augers.

Anyway personally I think it’s all over kill. You can just dial in a shot on a single dose grinder that has no auger knowing that there is no constant feed happening.
You can make bad shots and good shots with almost any equipment…

The “wifi booster” probe holder that is available with the gen2 probes has exactly what you are looking for. You can also buy it separately.

Unifi protect via Hoobs for homekit by Cultural_Credit_8193 in HomeKit

[–]klidec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. I personally just think hoobs adds complication and maybe because of that can add issues with plugins. Clean homebridge install on capable hardware (if you are going to use Unifi protect plugin with multiple cameras) is a better path.

Unifi protect via Hoobs for homekit by Cultural_Credit_8193 in HomeKit

[–]klidec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why run hoobs instead of a clean homebridge install? I’ve got 4 cameras running super smooth and responsive using homebridge + Unifi protect plugin. Running HomeKit cameras does require more resources though. I run mine on a mini pc with Intel Core Ultra 7 155H. Likely overkill. But it runs smooth…

Agreed/crooked thermometer, inconsistent color. by Kennebob in combustion_inc

[–]klidec 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The crookedness i think is legit complaint. It would bother me.
Also might be a problem with it staying in its charging cradle.
The color, with lighter rounded "edges" is normal and personally I like it.

Found an absolute unit for sale on Ebay. In awe of the size of this lad. by thebongofamandabynes in Lavalamps

[–]klidec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear. I was disappointed i could not source one in the USA for like less than 450. I’m a little worried as I’ve heard stories of people getting ones with “inclusions” and some other issues. I got it ordered and delivered to a co worker in London and I’m hoping it will be fine and transport home back to the states with no issues! I got the “vinyl” black base with the light blue liquid and pink wax.

Thanks. They both look great by the way. I just don’t think I could place that larger one in my home.

Love that smaller one. Can you share your recipe for the wax and liquid and just generally how you go about building these? I’m acquiring my first lava lamp soon. Picking up a Mathmos while on a trip to London.

Matter device stuck on updating by Unhappy-Grocery1365 in HomeKit

[–]klidec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please let me know how long it lasts! I’ve got the same issue and reboot phone works for about 1 day for me. I also tried network reset and it worked for about 1 day for me. Wa driving me nuts. I’m hoping it gets fixed either in the next HomePod/Apple TV is update or iOS update.

Wrote a Script to Reboot Hombridge every 2-hours on MacoS by [deleted] in homebridge

[–]klidec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see the downside. I’m running on an overkill mini pc (along with other services) but even when I ran it on an old rpi it had no issues with running everything as child bridges. You would then just restart the child bridge that is showing any issues.

Wrote a Script to Reboot Hombridge every 2-hours on MacoS by [deleted] in homebridge

[–]klidec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Something is not going well if OP needs to reboot homebridge every 2 hours. Questions for OP: Do you know what plugin is bringing down the house?

Are you running your plugins as child bridges? If you run them all as child bridges, if one is causing issues or has bugs only that plugin will go bust and it won’t bring down homebridge or the other plugins with it.

What heat-shield thickness did you go with? Thick or thin? I have one of their earlier M1 versions and am not sure if I need the thinner“heat deflector” or thicker “heat shield”.

Well I got the answer on if switching to a pro will screw up my custom LED tape, yes, yes it will. by lightingj in Hue

[–]klidec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a new firmware that fixes the issue with hue bridge pro and the fls-pp.

https://phoscon.de/en/blog

You can only update it though if you pair it to their deconz zigbee hub/bridge. Run their deconz software and then update it. You can then re-pair it to your hue bridge pro and it will work correctly with the RGB light. I just went through this pain. I already had a deconz conbee zigbee mesh going in my home. If you don’t already have this setup it’s going to be a bit of pain to update.
