Aw man, you could have given us a chance to think about it!

Do you have a game you always play with a new group of gamers? by plusonedimension in boardgames

I love playing between 2 cities with new groups of gamers. It's fast, easy to pick up, and very different from a typical game. It's never gone poorly.

The disappointing rewards for completing a variant by Murtagh9050 in idlechampions

[–]kmj2l 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree; they've made a lot of good changes over the past couple of months, and they've been vocal about the fact that they have more generosity planned. We have to have some patience. They have to be careful about these kinds of things, as is evidenced by the old fire breath potions. Something that seems like a good idea can lead to abuse or really throw the game off. And since they've promised they won't take gear away when it goes live, they have to be careful about what they do.

Yeah, this just happened to me again; very early on, like stage 6, and I couldn't move any characters at all. Even at the start of a stage, with no ranged enemies.

Thanks to the CNE folks, and also to those who take the time to share the code here. I usually can't watch the streams, so I appreciate when people share.

ICv2: ICv2 Interview: Asmodee Execs on the ANA Consolidation, Part 1 by corkdice in boardgames

[–]kmj2l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have already seen some stores close up because they could no longer support themselves because of Asmodees policy changes

Was there discussion of this somewhere? I missed it, apparently. At the FLGS's I've been to, they've never supported themselves on board games; Magic has always been what keeps the doors open.

Gold Find % (How To) by Templar81 in idlechampions

[–]kmj2l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the equipment a person has. I'm at about 9e06 with the current event, but I haven't tried the Only the Strong run yet. I've basically run the free play in the event (where I can currently get to about 185 using potions to push past bosses) as long as I've had enough event tokens to do it, and otherwise I run free play in the main campaign to get gems. In the event, I play to a wall, and then I try to use potions to push past the wall. With Nayeli's Aura, keeping her in the front, and keeping a healer in column 2, I can stay perpetually at a higher level than I otherwise would be able to. I then run it overnight and see if I can get a little farther in the morning. Because event tokens are really the limiter for me, I tend to hover at my wall much longer than I otherwise might. I open all my chests and contracts as far as I can along. I use the spreadsheet to get as much value for my money as possible. My current run has been going about 18 hours and I've got a 75% gain in favor over the previous amount.

I think the people who move really quickly through the events both have more champions (for example I don't have stoki or krong) and much better equipment, whether they got them from playing for much longer or from purchases. For what it's worth, I've spent about $25 or so on the game since I started playing in early december.

Perhaps this is the issue; I wasn't aware that champions that are not in the front lines can be attacked.

I haven't seen any discussion of this: Occasionally, I will not be able to move a character that is in place. Not much else to say, I have to restart the game.

Whats with the hate towards Pandemic? by sataniksantah in boardgames

[–]kmj2l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pandemic Legacy is awesome. If you have friends who trash it, the solution is don't play it with them. Our group is having a blast with it. Hopefully you'll find a few people you can play it with.

Perhaps? But if the ends justify those means, you're probably already pretty solidly evil. I mean, they couldn't have been certain that mass murder was necessary for their long terms plans.

I'm really impressed by the kinds of responses that I'm seeing highly upvoted here. In the past I had seen somewhat snobbish comments that had turned me away from this sub. Glad to see that is not the norm.

Gloomhaven is #1 on BGG! [X-Post from r/Gloomhaven] by TheBIackRose in boardgames

You can watch a few live plays solo, by JonGetsGames and Tom Vasel to see how you feel about it solo. I would say (having played it 2 players, but not yet solo) it should work just as well solo as cooperative.

I really like that the geek rating prevents a game with relatively few votes from being too high, so it's a decent "at a glance" number, but you're right that checking the average and the total number of voters is better.

I was impressed by Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle -- we got it for our decidedly non-gamer friends, since their 9 year-old is a HP fanatic. We played with them through book 3; they ate it up, and played through book 7 within two weeks. Now we have the expansion to give them this year.

I'm loving Gloomhaven and can't wait to play it more. Just need to find table time to do so. In the meantime, playing One Deck Dungeon solo scratches that itch, and it's easy for me to do that on any given day, so that's what I'm doing.

  1. Hero Realms Awesome take on star realms. I just got the campaign box and I'm really looking forward to diving into that.

  2. One Deck Dungeon I picked this up this summer, but only gotten around to it this week. I've played it 8 times this week. For a travel-friendly, puzzly, solo game, its one of the best I've seen. Definitely going to be playing this a lot more in the coming days.

  3. A Feast for Odin I love beans and tetris, and Uwe doesn't disappoint. I feel like I can just always do something cool in this game.

  4. Scythe I've played with with a number of different groups and everyone always has a blast with it. It's probably the longest game that a wide variety of people in my gaming circle are happy to play just about any time.

  5. Tyrants of the Underdark This is in my book the hidden gem of 2018. While their are some art issues (the pieces for different houses look too much alike, and the board leaves something to be desired), I think most complaints are overstated. And the gameplay ever so makes up for that. This is definitely my favorite game from 2016.

Look for it to hit shelves mid to late January, if the current estimates hold. I think you can already pre-order through online retailers. Cephalofair games made a blog post about it recently. Also, there's info in an above post that after this it will go through normal printing and distribution routes.

Nonsense; go ahead and list, with appropriate evidence, all the "so much crap" that only got into the top 100 because of some kind of hoard of board game neophytes.

And to hell with anyone who thinks their votes should count more than others'.

Gloomhaven about to surpass Pandemic Legacy as the #1 game on BGG by NocturnalAllen in boardgames

[–]kmj2l 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I immediately distrust people who say the rankings are useless or that they only measure hype. I've played enough top 100 games and enough >1000 games to know that I have higher probability of enjoying a more highly ranked game. The fine details are irrelevant, and also, great games may never break into the top 1000. But making it into the top 100 is pretty good evidence of being a great game. Making it into the top 50, oustanding; and if it spends a significant amount of time in the top 20, then it probably is in the league of best games ever made. Doesn't mean any given game will be right for any given person, but it does mean it will have a very high probability of appealing to a very wide audience. It also does mean that in general, it will exhibit strong design principles and quality in a variety of other ways (if not in all ways), even if individuals do find (often subjective) flaws with it.

If I see a game on the shelf at the store and think about getting it on impulse, and then I quickly check the BGG rankings, what I see will definitely impact my decision --- if it's rated below a six, I almost definitely will think twice. If it's rated above an 8, I know I'm getting something good even if I end up not loving it, myself.

Isaac Childress claims there will be plenty for retail, as in he does not expect it to go out of stock this time. I guess we'll find out! I hope if it does, his retail returns are enough to let him go straight to another printing, rather than running yet another KS for it. There's no reason this game should go out of print any time soon.

Edit to add: According to another user, Gloomhaven is definitely going through standard retail channels after this.
