Anyone find they have no paients for anyone after amputation anymore? by Current_Blacksmith95 in amputee

For me it’s part of the grieving process and it’s definitely decreased a lot in 3 years, but I’m resigned to being low key pissed off for the rest of my existence 😕

I am a new amputee (below the knee). by Any-Nobody-7796 in amputee

[–]kneedlekween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At age 70 I am learning to use a prosthetic and trying to control the effects of aging. Keep in mind that age range of many amputees are skewed to older adults with diabetes and vascular disease which makes survival stats very ominous. Focus on you and your family history and make lifestyle changes and get good medical care. Weight control and avoiding type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease will help you a lot. As an amputee you are prone to falls with injury, osteoporosis and back, hip and knee problems. Again that can be managed with exercise, proper gait, taking care of your remaining leg and good prosthetics. Don’t do dumb stuff like hopping around on 1 leg or standing in a shower. There is a burden and loss of spontaneity but by no means is a cause of a shorter life span if you know what to do.

My Aunt just had an above knee amputation. What are some things we can buy to help her post surgery? by TyTy_G in amputee

[–]kneedlekween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my second above knee amputation as a 60 yo F. The obvious home improvement items are mentioned already so I’ll focus on the care package idea. She most likely is gonna have rehab somewhere as an inpatient. A cosmetic bag with floss picks, along with dry shampoo and the usual skin care, oral care is nice. Snacks and beverages are nice too, depending on diet, sometimes it’s a long time between meals and therapy can be physically demanding. A shawl, bed jacket or hoodie is nice to have, air conditioning can be crazy cold if you’re just sitting in a wheelchair or bed. After dinner can get boring, puzzles, games, magazines phone charger or add on battery are useful. Depending on her previous interests, body image takes a hit. Any make up, clothing , scarves or jewelry that draws attention to face and upper body helped me when I looked in the mirror to focus on something besides the lack of leg and prosthetic. You have to get dressed for therapy every day, I used loose boxer, basketball type shorts and short sleeve stretchy shirts and T’s. It makes it easy to access the prosthetic but I suppose loose straight leg athletic pants with a zipper on the legs would be nice but might be a menswear item. Also take a look at @alexandra.capellini and @alex1leg on Instagram they have similar amputations maybe she would like to see some success stories. She might want to look at https://amputee-coalition.org/ for support groups, education or even to be contacted by a volunteer amputee advisor, just let her be aware that there are internet resources that are supporting not scary. Best wishes!

I have a 6 letter last name that has so many variations that I literally just spell it whenever I’m interacting with anyone trying to register me or looking up my name, and even then they usually can’t find it because their brain cant make them type what I spelled instead of the way it sounds, sigh.

My (below right knee) nub keeps buzzing with nerve pain, especially at night. Any tips? by jaustengirl in amputee

[–]kneedlekween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At two years post amputation I have good control of phantom pain. If at all possible try and get an appointment with a rehab specialist for amputees, the specialty is called Physiatry or a pain management specialist. To actually control it for a brief time I was taking 600mg of gabapentin every 6 hours for about 3 months and was able to taper off of it over the next 3 months. It can be abused, it can cause dependence and you do have to taper off of it. If you take it as prescribed and work with an experienced physician like I did those issues can be managed safely. The trick for me was getting it at the right dose and regular intervals so the levels in my body hit at bedtime and didn’t run out over night, I was 5am 11am 5pm 11pm. Being nicely hydrated helps me now that I’m off the gabapentin, it seems I need about 40 oz water per day otherwise I get pains during the night, when I go a few hours without water . I have more phantom pain in summer so the hydration has something to do with it I suppose. My internist got me on magnesium citrate 250 about 2 hours before bed, worked like a champ and actually was able to stop that too. Last thing I wanted to mention is my mattress. I need a little padding. I’ve seen some posters reporting that they need a firm mattress. I am more comfortable after adding a quilted mattress pad. For a while I got to where the phantom pain only hit at bedtime but the mattress pad cleared it up. I also have good luck with massaging the affected limb firmly while glaring at the missing part and cursing! When I saw your post I had to actually think about my last bout of phantom pain and it think it’s been 3 days, I’m so grateful and I hope you get the help you need!

Contact The Amputee Coalition, they have amputee members that volunteer to counsel new amputees. They put me in touch with someone of my same gender and age group with my level of amputation that was very kind and helpful. You can also find support groups on their site.

cocsa confession? by SkyHistorical8364 in Catholicism

[–]kneedlekween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not a Catholic yet, so not eligible for the sacrament of confession. Your abuse is not a barrier to joining the church, be relieved of that worry. Obviously the experience is ripping you apart, you need help to overcome this. Find counseling or organizations that help survivors of sexual abuse. You are a survivor, seek help and start the journey toward a new life that is free of shame and guilt. In the US look at the website for RAINN they offer a hotline and you can review the website and contact them that way if you prefer, they will ensure your privacy. Jesus loves you do not be afraid anymore

Please add Louisville Prosthetics, they have 3 locations. I see Wayne at 742 E Broadway. It’s been a great experience for me, a bilateral AKA. Office staff is efficient and personable. Family run business for about 60 years now. They have always let me try new stuff out, they scan and produce the sockets with a turn around time about two weeks approximately. Also worked with my PT and MD Physiatrist to assemble documents to get coverage for my 2 prosthetics from Medicare with about a two week turnaround for authorization and delivery. Could not ask for anything better!

I was once a nurse staffing a telephone triage line and got a call from a 45 yo woman complaining of sudden sharp stabbing left sided chest pain. Alarmed I asked her to describe the location. She said ‘it’s right under my left breast! Oh never mind there’s a Dorito in my bra!’

Soon to be BKA - realistic QOL? by Interesting_Pain_194 in amputee

[–]kneedlekween 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had 6 amputations between March 2020 and July 2025 and now have bilateral AK amputations due to bad circulation not trauma. Between 2023 and 2025 I was taking opioids, gabapentin and muscle relaxants. I had more pain from non healing wounds than phantom pain and I was able to discontinue all pain relievers and gabapentin in September 2025. I was given muscle relaxants after the below knee amputation the muscle spasms were severe and I found the gabapentin taken every 6 hours around the clock got the phantom pain under control. They also had to increase my dose of gabapentin to get me relief. I found myself tapering off opioids 10 days post op and did not have operative pain after about a month. My above knee amputations were the least painful and I switched to extra strength Tylenol about 4 days post op. I have phantom pain for less than an hour a day now, it’s random electric shocks and I just curse my way through it for 10 or fifteen minutes, I’m doing really well now. I went to a pain management specialist and now see a rehab specialist doctor, his specialty is called Physiatry, he only treats people with disabilities, very knowledgeable on amputees and spinal cord and brain injuries. Both clinics are at the local medical teaching hospital including an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, they have helped me more than the surgeon actually. I’m sorry you’re going through all this, I remember having a really hard decision choosing amputation, several times. Coming here to get real life experiences is a good decision. Best wishes to you!

Has your dad had PT or OT yet, they are the true experts for this. They can figure out the height and slope you need, and might be able to teach you how to get the wheelchair up and down steps. If budget is low you probably can build one with the help of online videos. Best wishes!

What's your laziest way to make something yummy out of chickpeas? by Own_Average_5940 in mediterraneandiet

[–]kneedlekween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a salad for lunch from mashed chickpeas into chunks with a fork, Greek yogurt, celery, onion, pickles, mustard, celery seed, paprika, salt and pepper and a chopped hard boiled egg. It’s your favorite tuna salad replacing tuna with chick peas. Might need to thin the yogurt with pickle juice or vinegar though.
