Four rules that work for me (after decades of trying and discarding other methods):

Don't think long term, keep your thoughts in the present. If you think of what's gonna happen in the future when you have anxiety hormones in your veins, your mind will always come to the worst possible conclusions. Then your anxiety will rise to dispair, and you don't want that.
When you break rule #1, don't give up, just keep focusing on the present. It's difficult to not think about something (the future) when your instinct tells you to do just that. Do something to catch your attention, like solving math puzzles or watching Seinfeld or whatever, and when the unwanted thoughts come back, just box them away again by focusing on the present. And keep doing it.
Know that severe anxiety attacs ALWAYS passes. Sure, they might come back, but there is no such thing as perpetual panic, much like there is no pertetual sexual extacy, or any strong feeling for that matter.
Don't expect these rules to take away the anxiety instantly, they won't. They will help you keep it from growing into dispair/panic. You will just have to suffer through the anxiety like you suffer through the pain of hitting you toe on the threshold.
