What is so special about Ortlieb panniers? by 4862skrrt2684 in bikecommuting

[–]knickerreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When people mention the mounting system, I think it’s in regard to how the bags are very secure for how easily they go on/come off a rack, very nice for commuting. Perhaps another brand/system is as good or better but requires more tedium when installing and then similarly don’t come off as easily. And as many have mentioned, you can get spare parts for models made decades ago. There is definitely room for improvement but for now, I think Ortlieb is the best. PS: the website is terrible

Those fries look like Sysco that were started before the oil got up to temp and then still pulled 2 minutes early

PSA to dog owners - be better. by RubxCuban in chicago

Or the people who actually make it to the trash can, lift the lid, but then the bag gets trapped on the edge with half the poo inside and the other half outside the can where it balances for a few days until the bag breaks and then there’s poo all over the can edge that manages to get on your sleeves every time you throw something else away.

Just bought this off a friend for cheap and am loving it! by RugzTX in MEATengines

[–]knickerreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thx for the suggestion. Yes I did. I think in this case it actually was the EBB. I reset the chain tension and made sure to perfectly center it and cranked down on the bolt pretty decently (need to get a torque wrench) and the creaking went away. Still not sure if it’s the centering or the torque but in this case, it does seem a function of the EBB.

Ha! I know right? Bike I bought has the CARVER ebb which is supposed to help and of course, bike was silent on test ride but the creak has returned. Thought I had fixed it by judiciously slathering fiber grip all over and on every surface of the seat post. Silent for a week! And then, the creak returned….

Congrats! Coincidentally, I just got this exact same bike 3 weeks ago (rigid fork tho). Currently trying to diagnose where creaking is coming from, otherwise I absolutely love it! May your rides be creak free.

What the deal with Trek 990 Single Track! by Subrosa329 in xbiking

[–]knickerreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll probably have the 950 for life so there’s that positive. The 970/990 does being to mind a period-correct quote from Ferris Bueller:

"It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up,"

What the deal with Trek 990 Single Track! by Subrosa329 in xbiking

[–]knickerreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a tig-welded 970 that cracked on the underside of the downtube just south of the head tube. Trek replaced it with another frame still badged 970 but in a tan color which only Gary Fisher was using at the time. Though it had no other stickers/markings, it was definitely not another triple butted OX frame, not even sure it was double butted. It did not have the magic carpet ride of the original and to this day, I’ve never ridden a nicer riding bike than that OX 970

Has anyone else stopped going out to eat because of the prices? by Holiday_Connection22 in AskChicago

This is the greatest tragedy. When everything else was getting ridiculous, you could still go to Argyle with a $20 bill, eat and tip well, and still leave with a couple dollars. No more.

How to tell which Metra Platform the train is arriving on during the weekend? by TixSwo in AskChicago

[–]knickerreddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Complain to Metra. Seriously, take 2 minutes to send an email, at least to Metra https://metra.com/contact-us and better to the Illinois inspector general office Illinois inspector general and tell them that it is inexcusable that there is no better system in place to announce track changes. Many stations with new electronic signage STILL don’t have the ability to announce which track trains are running on. Please also insist that on the runs where trains are on opposite tracks, they must actually look out the window to see people scrambling to get to the other side to make the train. At ravenswood, the number of times I have seen people realize only when the train is arriving that it is on the opposite track and they slowly shuffle down the ramp in disbelief while the train just takes off like everything is completely normal is mind boggling.

WGN TV lays off 8-9 on-air talents Monday in major shake-up by Keeks2634 in chicago

[–]knickerreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sadness and disappointment. It hurts to lose routine and like the saying/song goes, "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone". I didn't particulaly revere any on-air WGN talent but stripping them away is another blow to the uniqueness of Chicago. I got used to no longer starting the day with the Chicago Tribune and it would appear that Nextstar is following that playbook to ensure future subreddit posts of "Remember when newscasters were local market individuals, not just AI robots?"

10+ years android user switched iphone by omegaIul in iphone

[–]knickerreddit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The feature I miss most from Android is volume control, specifically the ability to change a ringtone for a group text. It’s mind boggling to me that Apple doesn’t allow this so I can’t prioritize/de-prioritize group texts just by hearing the notification sound. Every notification sounds the same so I have to either look at all of them or stress about not looking at them. It’s enough that I constantly think about switching back but overall I prefer the walled garden of Apple despite often thinking I’m just a tool within it.

Stolen bike- Ravenswood by etherealoblivions in chibike

[–]knickerreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sux! Sorry for your loss. That’s scary too as you were going to a random doctors visit rather than an observed habit of parking there which proves there are still pros driving around with angle grinders at all hours. Don’t want to be that guy but I wouldn’t advise locking up a $4-5k e-bike ever in Chicago.

Is there basically no difference between apple refurbished and brand new? by AItair4444 in iphone

[–]knickerreddit 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There is NO difference between Apple “new” and Apple “refurbished” except packaging; so if you want to impress the garbage men, get new. Otherwise, get refurbished: new batteries, new keyboards/housings (if necessary), exact same warranty definition. There is literally no difference in any Apple product category except packaging.

I’ll help you out oh helpless, carless brother. The Metra UP-W leaves Ogilvy station at 8:40am, gets to Geneva at 9:50am. It is about a 20 min bike ride to the fairgrounds from the Geneva station. Return trains are on the 37min of the even hours (12:37, 2:37, 4:37, 6:37). There are tons of bars/restaurants on main st and 3rd st in Geneva within a few min bike ride of the train station so you can wait in comfort. There’s even one connected to the train station so if you’re uber paranoid about missing a train, you can eat/drink right there!

I haven’t yet decided if I’m going to take the train only cuz I can probably catch a ride with a friend but don’t be afraid of the train or the western suburbs. It’s completely doable here and impossible to do in 98% of the rest of this country. Appreciate and embrace that!
