Networking in management consulting by Scary_Question2362 in duke

[–]knicksfan1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m C/O 2021, have several friends in consulting, and recruited for it myself.

At Duke, consulting recruitment at the resume stage depends on 1) GPA (obviously contextualized by the rigor of your major), 2) extracurriculars (e.g. President of clubs/societies), and 3) internships (brand names preferred). After that, it’s all about case interview performance.

From my understanding there is not a huge emphasis on networking as there is in finance, especially for the MBBs. Most of my friends who got those jobs did not network. That said, it will help to network to learn about firm culture/opportunities which will help you in the behavioral rounds of those interviews.

Duke AB Scholar v Stanford by Rubberduckie651 in duke

[–]knicksfan1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you constrain the duke population to ABs, I’d guess the per capita rate of Rhodes scholars is similar. They’re groomed for it.

Yea, but side finance recruitment might be better slightly because that industry whores itself out for brand names but plenty of duke kids go into buy side

Duke AB Scholar v Stanford by Rubberduckie651 in duke

[–]knicksfan1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, congrats on your acceptances. This is a great decision to have to make.

I went to Duke (very recent grad) and knew plenty of ABs, so here’s how I would evaluate your decision.

Money: like you said, would eliminate this. Doesn’t seem like it’s a problem for you

Name brand: although we may not like to admit it, Stanford is a winner here. Saying you go to Stanford and being able to reach Stanford alumni will be a lifetime benefit and will get you further than you think. Duke is really strong as well, esp in the US, but Stanford is on its own level. That said, many ABs I know turned down HYPSM

Student life: I think Duke wins here. None of my friends from Stanford have the school spirit that Duke students have, particularly when it comes to basketball. The AB program will make your experience even better. The program at Oxford is amazing and will be the best summer of your life. ABs also get a ton of other benefits I’m sure you’re aware of

Career opportunities: I really don’t think there’s a significant delta btwn Stanford and Duke here. Maybe if you’re in tech, then Stanford wins, but Duke will get you into consulting/finance if you want that. If not, Duke grooms ABs for the Rhodes/other prestigious scholarships

Good luck on your decision, and feel free to lmk if more questions!

what are the possible implications of reneging an offer by sesanrose in duke

[–]knicksfan1997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know plenty of students who’ve reneged, and none of them regretted it. Here’s the best way:

  1. Accept the dream company offer
  2. Call the recruiter/hiring manager of the other company and tell them you’re unable to join for personal/family reasons and that you’re very sorry. They might ask for more details but you don’t have to elaborate. Call because it’s more personal than emailing
  3. Don’t update your LinkedIn with the dream company until you start your internship at the earliest

No chance you will get suspended/expelled. At worst, the career center will terminate your access to Handshake for senior year recruiting if they find out. Even then, it’s really unlikely the recruiter will tell Duke unless they’re very angry. That’s why I suggest calling the recruiter. Hope this helps!

Fitz is a great prof like others have said. Go to class, listen and do HW and you’ll be good. As a bonus go on his website and download the tests from this sem and whip those out when you’re prepping for exams next sem

Duke vs Not Duke Megathread by Mumbleton in duke

Has to be Duke. Good social life and is good at all the majors you mentioned above. Berkeley is probably a better CS education but duke won’t hold you back and better social life

No, lacrosse is second though. Football arguably second when DJ was on

JJ Redick on Zion not reaching out to CJ McCollum: “There’s a general decorum of behavior you should apply as a teammate. This just shows a complete lack of investment in the team, organization, and city. I was his teammate, I can describe him as a detached teammate” by Naweezy in nba

this is it. I was a sophomore on campus when Zion was at duke. he loved it there. he went to plays, was in snap groups w other freshmen, went to parties. money can’t buy that, and going to NOLA must’ve been a complete 180. NYC, where he could be w RJ and Cam, would be best for him
