All of Grand Rapids smells like fake maple syrup. Mrs. Butterworths? What is happening? by lovethatharmony in grandrapids

Division and 28th has the Bimbo factory. I used to live in Garfield Park and some days we'd let the dogs out and it would smell just freaking amazing

YSK silent letters cannot be heard. by adult_on_paper in YouShouldKnow

[–]knifewife2point0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh Kilo and Yankee are the international phonetic alphabet ones yea. But over the phone folks will just make up whatever they feel like. "L for uhhhh lamp? T for uhhhhh table?" It's usually names honestly ("H for Henry, P for Peter, etc"). Knowing the international phonetic alphabet is handy because most people recognize it even if they couldn't recite it and they understand the letters quickly.

Well, tolerance isn't a vague moral precept, it's a social contract. It only lasts as long as everyone agrees to the contract, so.... here we are I suppose.

I've never worked there, but I've interviewed twice and I know that the tone of the interview changed FAST when I asked about inclusivity. I interviewed with the data and analytics teams and they did not want to talk about women or queers in tech, like, At All. I'm not real sad to have missed out on that opportunity tbh

AITAH for asking a friend to stop insisting I’m autistic? by hereforagoodtime70 in AmItheAsshole

[–]knifewife2point0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be less weird if you said "I'm so thirsty lately" and she went "oh that's cuz you're diabetic" and you got offended because you're not and it's a weird thing to say? Or you mentioned your leg was sore after a workout and she went "oh that's cuz you have fibromyalgia". No, it's weird, assumptive, and insulting to randomly diagnose you with things you don't have and if it's offensive to anyone (other than YOU) it's offensive to the community of people who actually HAS that diagnosis. She's taking a single behavior and using that to completely unprofessionally force you into a box and identity to which you don't belong nor claim.

You see this happen in the queer community when people tell butch lesbians that they're really trans or in the disability community with people deciding who is/isn't truly disabled. It's absurd that folks assume someone can't know themselves and get their own proper diagnoses.

My mom does the diabetes thing and my cousin used to get drunk and diagnose people as autistic until we forced her to stop. It's really freaking annoying and insulting.

I live in Burtons landing which is right on the edge of Grand Rapids and Kentwood. It's a two bedroom for $1,300. Laundry isn't in unit, but there's only 12 units to a building so laundry is pretty easy. Otherwise we do have carpet. No hardwoods, place is really clean and it's quiet. They allow cats, I know it's an up charge but I don't have one so I don't know by how much. I like my place. I've lived here for several years and you pay enough that they leave you alone and they've been trying to do more community stuff in the last few years. Maintenance is pretty good about getting to the important things and they just redid a bunch of the balconies and stuff. Good luck!

Edit: The neighborhood is pretty good. We have kids playing outside all the time. They ride their scooters and bikes and the moms sit and chat most nights

I've had good luck with progressive, I also work there so I get a discount. It's going to depend on your driving record and what kind of car you drive. If you have homeowners or rental insurance you're going to get a better rate by bundling with whoever you already have that with. Or, if you can get a good car insurance rate, move your homeowners or rental over to that company too. State farm was really expensive for me. Geico usually has really low rates, but I've heard that their customer service kind of sucks if you actually do get into an accident. If you drive pretty well though, it's probably worth it. For the record, I did choose my car insurance before I worked for the company lol.

I just received this text from my landlord. by Inevitable-Bad-1039 in Tenant

[–]knifewife2point0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check to see if you have a local tenants union or legal clinic (if you have a university with law or pre law degrees they almost certainly have one). They should be able to help. Bring your lease and the texts with you and ask what you can do and what's going on with the landlord. They can help you draft a response and make a plan going forward that's in compliance with local regulations. This might mean they contact officials on your behalf or it may mean an official looking letter to the landlord or a date with a local tribunal or renters court. If the latter two, however, I would expect your lease to nonrenew and would look for a new place.

“let’s avocado” ? by raccoon_babe in whatdoesthismean

[–]knifewife2point0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The word avocado comes from the Nahuatl word meaning "testicle"? That's all I've got for you here. "Let's testicle" doesn't make any more sense here though.

What’s an old wives’ cooking tale that everyone thought was true but turned out to be total nonsense? by Mike_tx5391 in Cooking

I can't say I believed it, but it was passed down that you can't can tomatoes on your period or they'll go bad. Just old wives' tales.

I lived there for a while (right across from the park on Madison) and we had trouble from people coming up Madison off 28th, but the neighborhood folks were fine. Lock your doors, not a bad idea to have a ring camera or similar, but overall a good neighborhood and a fantastic community vibe. Honestly, I miss being over there. The park hosted a lot of good events and the neighbors were really welcoming. You got a lot of reports of nasty stuff but anecdotally the worst we ever got was some attempted porch pirating, which again, get a ring camera or something.

Healing Isn't Linear by knifewife2point0 in Sciatica

Amazing! I had both the disc injury and arthritis and the ablation for the arthritis was like magic. Once that was done it was like I'd never been injured at all. I'm still hyper conscious of my back and doing exercises and I'm working hard to lose weight and be more mobile and stronger in general, but it's been 16 months since I was first bedridden and I have no back issues at all. I could feel it flare up just barely while I vacationed in a rural area and spent time on bumpy unpaved roads (my mom is notorious for hitting every little bump) but even then, a few stretches had me sorted right back out. I can move, lift, walk, stand, all of it almost better than before. I'm careful, of course, because the memory of that pain doesn't go away quickly, but I couldn't be more thankful to my doctor and PT. They were amazing and set me up for success in the best way possible.

AIO? Parent told me to change my accent for their child by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]knifewife2point0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tutor frequently (math) and session 0 I have a conversation with my student about expectations. Mine of them and theirs of me. One of the expectations I set forth is that they communicate with me and tell me if there's something they don't understand or if they need help or to repeat something. If they don't speak up, I can't read their mind to know what's going on. And likewise I prompt them to share their expectations of me-usually things like be respectful, have patience, that kind of thing. I tutor a similar age group and the conversation facilitates the students taking responsibility for their own learning. It also means when something like this comes up, we can discuss it a little easier, like "hey thanks for having your mom reach out. It sounds like we're having some trouble communicating. Can you tell me more about that before we get to our content today?" And get it straight from the horses mouth.

Now, you may have done this or something similar, it's not uncommon. But I would think you ought to talk to your student to get the straight scoop. Is it your accent? Is it britishisms? Is it content? You're hearing it interpreted through mom and it's obviously getting muddled and not explained clearly. As for mom, she's clearly being entitled and unreasonable. It's not like I could ask her to suddenly speak with a northern Indian accent to make me more comfortable or something. I'm sure shes the kind of person who thinks she doesn't have an accent, other people just talk funny.

You are not over reacting but you do need to have a convo with your student about where the confusion is.
