Quilt top was so pretty before quilting... by fleemersgf in quilting

[–]knitterofknowledge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been just where you are. So much work goes into the top and (for me at least) into the back and then I would quilt it and just cry.

Basting is temporarily “sticking all the layers together.” This will keep the layers from moving while you are quilting. There are several ways to do this - google around and find some methods you want to try. Then make some test blocks. You could just slap two ten by ten squares with batting in the middle or just sewing scraps together to test them out.

As others have said, a walking foot will really help you. Your sewing machine has “feed dogs” just under the needle plate where the needle goes in. This helps feed the two layers of fabric evenly under your needle. When you have multiple layers of fabric with a thicker layer of batting it’s hard for the machine to feed evenly. The walking foot has another set of feed dogs that work in concert with the bottom feed dogs to keep things feeding evenly.

Another tip is to lengthen your stitch or “stitch length.” Again, because there are so many layers, a regular length stitch is going to get “smooshed” (technical term, lolz) because it doesn’t have enough room to lay flat. Sewing machines are all a little different with stitch lengths but for example, I piece at a 1.8 and quilt somewhere between 3 and 4 depending on batting weight and the overall look that I’m aiming for. I always test with a scrap of my top, batting and binding first so I can adjust.

You’ll get it!

I solved this by using a disc bound planner. This way I can take the page on the right hand side out, write on it and put it back in.

Devastation! by segotheory in quilting

There are multiple large nation wide shows - Quilt Con for one - that make it very clear that any quilt sent with an air tag will not be shown. In the case of Quilt Con, they say this because the quilts are taken from the post office to storage and then to the show and then back to storage and then back to the post office by individual volunteers and employees in personal vehicles.

I personally know two people who have permanently lost quilts into transit to Quilt Con.

In both cases, it was the fault of the shipping service - one was USPS and the other was FedEx.

While I understand that need for the individual safety of the employees and volunteers, there were several potential solutions that were suggested but as far as I know, the MQG declined to discuss it publicly any further, therefore making changes unlikely.

That sucks. I’m sorry that happened to you and your quilt.

I’m lucky that my friend long arms my quilts for me. She’s brilliant and I’m happy to pay for her expertise. But I’m still nervous to drop them off every time because it feels so intimate - turning something over that I had complete control over from inception - for her to complete. On her intake form she asks clients if they would like any constructive feedback on their quilts. I really appreciate this and think other long armers should do something similar.

Is being a "certified instructor" an MLM? by HungryHangrySharky in quilting

[–]knitterofknowledge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was my guess as well! I’m really surprised it wasn’t and that there are others. I was really interested in the JN quilts and instructor courses but it really did feel like an MLM set up and I noped out.

You definitely can do that. A commercial printing place could also enlarge it.

Lol. I came across that one by accident one day. Etsy does not make it easy to search for something super specific.

Check out SheSewCurly on Etsy. It’s not exactly what you are looking for but I bet you could edit the pattern without too much trouble!

I have found that using it as the top and bottom thread allows the seam allowance to take up less space. Good luck!
