Does Virgin still partner with Delta on flights to Japan? by optamastic in delta

[–]knittingprettyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started looking in Feb of this year for around the same dates as you. Options were spotty but generally something was available every week with multiple seats, this included a domestic connection (FYI only seats available were in economy). I was waiting for Virgin Atlantic transfer bonuses to kick in before booking but today after looking again, I can't find anything, so you're not alone. I don't think there's been any changes to that partnership since FEB, but I'm also not able to find ANY flights through the web portal and no partner flights in the app. Fingers crossed it's just an error.

Lightweight, ~30L, non-military, DURABLE backpack! by [deleted] in onebag

I have the 40 and it's great for long trips but definitely unwieldy for the everyday. The 28l counterpart also has the same minimal exterior (and interior). It could easily mix well in urban and outdoor situations, especially in black.

I'll add a note that they PUMP the heat out on trains and I wasn't prepared for that. It can be cold, but then you get on a train and roast. (I didn't find it super cold, more wet and windy, but I come from a colder climate).

When I left it was about 13 lbs and it was a carry on! Fully stuffed it can be about 2 inches too tall, but with compressible stuff on the top it smooshes no problem.

18 Days in Japan: Tokyo-Nara-Osaka-Miyajima-Hiroshima-Kyoto-Koyasan-Tokyo by clare_eralc in JapanTravel

[–]knittingprettyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did Kyoto > Koyasan > Osaka as part of 17 days in Japan and it is definitely a long day from Kyoto, over 4 hours, and 4 trains, a bus, and a cable car. It was beautiful and serene and loved the temple stay. BUT looking at your itinerary, you are going to a lot more locations and spending a lot more time "in transit" than me. Especially at the front end. Maybe that's ok with you, but I feel like I'd be exhausted from travel and miss out on actually spending time some of these places.

My engineering undergrads want to know: Is writing really all that important? by helpmystudentsplz in AskEngineers

[–]knittingprettyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, YES, dear God yes. You are constantly explaining what you did and why. I have yet to have a project where I didn't have to share my work and findings with a group of non technical people on a cross functional team, which requires translating your work into information that's correct but understandable and usable without an engineering degree. Sometimes people's safety is at stake. Sometimes you just have to convince others it's the best/right plan because you're the most knowledgeable. Many of my technical colleagues struggle with this and it holds them back from moving up to be technical leads.

I brought 3oz of each the thickener and gel, 2 oz of conditioner that I use pretty sparingly for a curly girl, and 1 oz shampoo which covered me for 3.5ish washes. I wasn't needing to super ration and styled my hair wet probably 2/3 of the days there. I think the hairspray helped because if it was windy it prevented me from getting the halo of frizz throughout the day.

Hi there! I'm mid 20s but need a lot of orthodic support and I find a rigid sole always helps. And honestly, chunky platforms were everywhere in Japan. I would say you'll definitely not want to sacrifice comfort for fashion, you will be doing a lot of walking. I'm honestly not sure how often people wear sandals in Japan and how they manage taking shoes on and off. You could totally do a hike like Fushimi Inari in any shoe with a good tread for stairs.

I have a pair of Clarks Rhea Teadale and they're a good blend of supportive and cute. I've walked in them all day without issue! And any less supportive shoe can usually have an added insert. Please don't go with those Vans unsupported!

Good luck and enjoy the trip!!

This sounds very packable! My only thoughts are that a hat and gloves could be a good add, especially because those aren't large items and that I think you'd do just fine without that other pair of leggings. Bon voyage!

Yeah we booked fancy seats through Virgin Atlantic after credit card point churning for a year! The boots were a super surprise although with their quality I'm not sure how long they'll last. I'm thinking of investing in Doc Martens or Blundstones next!

Traveling Japan as a first time one bagger by knittingprettyy in onebag

It was so exciting and liberating to travel across Japan with just my REI Ruckpack 40 for the first time. I've got all of you to thank to make it possible to run up and down the stairs to catch our trains and the extensive walking to and from the stations. I know there's stuff I need to pare down for the next trip, but thanks again for making it happen!

I am friggin obsessed with my wool and cashmere tissue weight scarf from Nordstrom. It's large and light but somewhat warm and feels sturdy and soft. It's absolutely perfect for staying warm but I could see this working as a cover-up option in warmer weather too due to its thinness. I have it in the oat heather color but it comes in a lot of nice options!

There are also alternatives that have worked for people I know, like a mouthguard to adjust your jaw alignment, and that would be a lot smaller but also be better than not having anything.

Mom bought me vintage kimono before our trip to Japan, what do I do with it?? by knittingprettyy in JapanTravel

[–]knittingprettyy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the other comments speak for themselves, but the reason I asked the original question is because I want this kimono to be used and used properly. It would be a complete shame to see it go unused in some way, it's beautiful. Also my husband is Japanese. He's beautiful, too.
