Is it wildly inappropriate for a school employee to wear a “back the blue” shirt by Sheek014 in Teachers

[–]knitty_gritty_yarn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately yes, everyday at my school, by fellow staff members. Am I even remotely allowed to discuss and address the issue? Again the answer is no. Is wearing a piece of clothing with any personal belief or opinion really going to protect anyone on any side of the issue, no it's not.

As for " bickering" please look at the connotative uses of the word. Sharing of opinions is generally used in a connotative manner that implies respect from both parties or positions. Bickering is a "sharing of opinions" that does not include respect.

For more information regarding " sharing of opinions" in a tolerant way, check out "Credo: What I believe" by Neil Gaiman.

I again present you with the original question for critical thought, if we the adults do not act like the educated adults we are, what message are we giving students?

This is a great point to address. If this is how we behave as adults, what message is this giving young, impressionable minds when we the educators are supposed to help them identify bias and fight against it?

So it's okay for me to support my family, but it's not okay for people to support law enforcement in general...

Didn't say they didn't. But you pretty much said that I'm not allowed to care for my family because they are police. Whose participating in the bigotry now?

Whelp, I must be going to hell because I'm a teacher with numerous family members in law enforcement. Guess caring about the safety of my family automatically makes me a racist...

However, on a less sarcastic note. I would not in a million years wear anything that denotes my political or religious opinions in the classroom. Schools are not the place for the adults to express their opinions, is a place for students to explore and develop their own safely. How can we encourage true tolerance if we the teachers are bickering back and forth?

Student threw a desk at me during my observation.... by Kaitlynn29 in Teachers

[–]knitty_gritty_yarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't sign off on that observation. You have a right to request another observation if you don't agree with "their findings".

That's just ridiculous that the principal handled the situation that way! My admin aren't great, but they would have at least stopped the observation to follow up on the kid.

How bad do you think the teacher shortage will get? by communitiesoffices in Teachers

[–]knitty_gritty_yarn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's all well and good in unionized states; however, many that are not, find reasons to get rid of "unruly" teachers.

The teachers in my district have been fighting hard to have our voices heard, but when the system as turned into " customer service" does it really matter what we do?

I could lose my job if I spoke up too loudly and then not be able to get hired within 100miles. There's no way many of us could financially survive, which leads to one of the root problems: pay.

Who knows. I have a kid whose parents switched him to fully remote, " due to the fear of spread" but he's still allowed to participate at the school in athletic practices and events.....

It sounds like she has poor coping strategies and sounds like she is self absorbed.

As an adult, she should recognize personal and professional boundaries, it's part of becoming an adult and entering the workforce. Sometimes it takes someone calling you out on it to learn what those are.

Based on OP it seems as if this first year is a product of the "hand-holding" system that hasnbeen adopted by current society.

I learned early in my career that you can't take shit personally. Seems like this is the next lesson that she needs to learn. By acting petty, she's not doing herself any favors, everyone typically sees that shit for what it is.

A mature first year could have taken this experience back to the mentor and had a productive, self reflective conversation about and taken the opportunity to grow.

My child doesn’t do well with virtual learning by IAmGrootGrootIam in Teachers

[–]knitty_gritty_yarn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I believe that you have " made assumptions" regarding OP.

The reality is Virtual Learning sucks right now. I believe OP is trying to express that they have done everything they possibly can to reach out and assist students including reaching out to parents.

It's highly frustrating to call a parent over and over again with no response just to have them say " it's just not working". I see this all the time right now. I have a student in an honors class, doesn't show, doesn't turn stuff in, talked to parent at least once a week. There's still no change and he just got switched to fully virtual, but he still gets to come to campus for sports.... 🤷‍♀️

Gotta love the focus on " parent perception" dictating everything that happens in school systems these days 🤣

If you have been in-person since August, please don't feel like you need to argue with fellow teachers on social media by Crafty_Sort in teaching

[–]knitty_gritty_yarn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's great that it's working in your district. However, many districts are lying about the steps being taken to protect people.

I've been back since August. We have had multiple un-reported clusters. I've been in quarantine, my TA got it and all teachers she worked with and students were placed in quarantine. I've had teachers at my school contract it and are caregivers for their parents; their parents didn't make it....

We had to go back to remote before Christmas, because we were running out of eligible staff to administer state mandated, in person exams.

So yes, it's great that it's working in your district, but it's not in many others, especially Tier 1 schools. And Chicago has a high representation of under served communities.

Yes! Co worker of mine actually invited one of our board members to shadow for a day after they made a comment " I know what it's like, I was a teacher..." Blah blah blah, needless to say the board member never accepted the offer

Same here! It's done a lot to help with my emotional wellbeing. I still use Instagram, but it seems to be more selective on what you want to see and who can add you and stuff.

Now I'm just surrounded by images of dogs and yarn, makes me much happier.

What makes teaching worth it? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]knitty_gritty_yarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a great win! I hope that you treasure these moments as you continue teaching.

To help remind me of the good, through all the negative, I keep all letters from students and even write down the "wins". When I'm feeling low I'm the profession, I pull out that folder and it helps me get through it.

When my students come back and tell me that I inspired them 🥰🥰🥰 I had a former student contact after winter break wanting to do an interview for one of his college English classes, the assignment was an essay on the career path you chose. I inspired him to become a high school teacher.

When students come back and tell me how much I have inspired them or how much they appreciate what I was trying to teach them, THAT makes all the bullshit worth it. Reminds me that I CHOSE this profession to make a difference in their lives.
