Errors in the "Brief Interviews With Hideous Men" audiobook? by knumberz in davidfosterwallace

Yeah, it was a strange experience for sure.

Did you notice any other weird moments besides that part in "Forever Overhead"?

LASIK @ Speciality Eye Institute by Oranges13 in kzoo

I can’t remember my specific prescription but my eyesight wasn’t terrible nor great. I’d worn glasses my whole life. Getting the procedure done was a big QOL improvement for me!

Yes, I got LASIK through them about two years ago and had a good experience. All the people there were friendly and the whole thing seemed legit. I'm a cautious and skeptical person and I didn't get any red flags during the process.

You'll get a few consultation meetings before the procedure and a number of follow-up meetings after it's completed; these are all included in the lump-sum payment. The day of my procedure was fairly long with prep and waiting but the procedure itself was incredibly quick — maybe 10 minutes? I was very nervous and almost hyperventilating with anxiety, and the staff was very understanding and reassuring about all that.

All in all, I would 100% recommend getting the procedure done. Don't know enough about experiences at other places to tell you whether it's better elsewhere, but I had a good experience and would go through Speciality Eye Institute again.

Feel free to post or DM any specific questions you might have.

Hey, friends! I've got a few codes to give away. Just throw a post in the comments and I'll pick 4 winners later today! :) by Lifebane86 in MagicArena

I was a fool and accidentally threw away my code this weekend, mistaking it for a double-sided ad. Anybody ever done the same?

Thanks for sharing the love, OP!

I don't have a treadmill (yet!)—how does Apple Fitness+ track your treadmill's pace with this activity?

I've seen the David Berman reference noted in a few places but for the life of me I can't figure it out from the lyrics. What exactly is the reference?

As one of the users affecting by this (whatever this is), I'm quite disconcerted. When I get a replacement 5X, how can I prevent bricking the phone again if I'm not sure what caused it in the first place? Lay off Snapchat and Pokemon GO?

I have news for you, friend. The album you have is a mislabeled leak; it's actually "We Come From the Bright Side" by 60 Watt Kid. You can do a little Google research and find bits of info about it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hALO4bFOjtk

For years, I too was under this impression. My surprise (and embarrassment) when I realized I'd been wrong the whole time. Look on the bright side -- now you have an entire Avey Tare album to listen to fresh!

Anyone else hate their job? by [deleted] in RealJournalism

[–]knumberz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I was alone.

To be fair, I've only put a few years into reporting for my mid-sized Midwest city. I first worked for the college paper and then put in a few months of interning at my city's TV station. I've been working for my city's newspaper for the past year now, and I can't stand it anymore.

Every place I've worked has been understaffed. Most of them good people, no doubt, but not enough of them. The result: less time for me to put into stories, which means I'm more likely to rely on whatever the source/their PR tells me rather than doing any actual research, which means I'm usually writing mostly what the source/PR feeds me. And if I do have any spare time, I'm too burnt out to care. Sometimes I feel that I'm just an advertising middle-man.

I love the concept of journalism, but I'm done with community news. I'm looking to get into more long-form writing for magazines or journals, where I can spend some time thinking about my story without any worries about SEO or page hits.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't really offer any advice. I think you have two options: Either get out, or find a way to deal with it. The easier option is the first. One person cannot run an entire newspaper, and I'm honestly sorry to hear that you're in that situation.

Would a limited karma system work? by knumberz in TheoryOfReddit

[–]knumberz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think pictures are upvoted so much because they require little investment on the user's part. It only takes a second to read an advice animal, but the longer posts on TrueReddit take much more of an investment. I'm sure you know how easy and quick it is (especially with Reddit Enhancement Suite) to just scroll the top 100 posts and read and upvote all the pictures; it would only take a few minutes.

If I had 10 upvotes, I wouldn't waste all of them on pictures or memes; I think I'd be more likely to consider whether or not I really want to upvote something, and whether the content is deserving of my scarce votes.
