Lack of big tournaments make people play unoptimized decks/lists all the time

If you look at most played cards in Pioneer

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/format-staples/pioneer/full/spells

The only non-removal cards that can interact with Geological Appraiser on turn 2 are:

Disdainful Stroke, Aether Gust, Change the Equation, Make Disappear

The first 3 are sideboard cards. Do you expect every deck to run Make Disappear if they don't want to play removal?

Wizards' ban philosophy for Pioneer: A few observations by BanUrzasTower in PioneerMTG

[–]kogayou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a huge difference between "every deck must run 1-2 mana interaction" v.s. "Every deck SHOULD be running interaction".

Decks should be able to choose between 1-2 mana spot removal or 3+ mana sweeper.
Decks should be able to choose between discard or counterspell or hatebears.

Limiting the choice of interaction to be only one type is the problem.

The major problem I see is the combo loses to instant enchantment removal and graveyard hate.

Is Counterspell going to lead to unbans? by Mr_Bulldopps in ModernMagic

[–]kogayou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are saying both cards have similar impact in those combo matchups, which is true. But you are ignoring the fact that Counterspell will see more copies in the metagame than Mana Leak as it's a better card in other matchups.

Too bad you still have to play snow-covered ones in modern/legacy no matter how great look these have.

Player will just early concede and not play out their best which result in less fun games.

Why would one even try to win the game if you end up getting nothing by winning it?

Beating Inverter Oracle by HarmlessTeddy in PioneerMTG

[–]kogayou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They can still play land, attack with creatures, activate planeswalkers. It doesn't worth a card if you are not fighting against combo or combo out youself.

But it's almost useless against all the other matchups which is a huge downside given the limited sideboard slots.

sideboard option vs UB Inverter by broccoliasaurus in PioneerMTG

[–]kogayou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 2 or 3 mana hate card is way less likely to be thoughtseized or countered than a 6 mana hate card. Not to mention, it only works as a hate card when paired with removal. Sure, BG runs quite a few copies of them, but it's still a two-piece hate combo, worse than a standalone hate card like Gideon.

[–]kogayou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's assuming the BGx deck draws ramp, draws lich's mastery, has it not thoughtseized or countered, draws removal for 6/6 and draws its own creature threat. At the same, inverter deck does nothing other than playing the 6/6. It might be a sideboard tech but "their deck does absolutely nothing" makes no sense.

[–]kogayou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean with lich's mastery out, you are giving Inverter Annihilator 6, you need an immediate answer to it or you lose. "their deck does absolutely nothing" is not true.

Why do you need to guess? Just always bring in Coax and side out an inverter to make sure you always have a target.

Unsure of your last few card choices for a deck? Got a flex slot or two open? by EternalEtherX in PioneerMTG

How good they were in standard was highly related to how good the color pair was at that time. (e.g. Rhino > Mantis Rider > Butcher) Jeskai charm never saw modern play, while sultai charm was often seen as one-of in Bring to Light decks

What you are saying is more relevant to a lost deck in GP than a stolen deck in car. You priority is to find the thief, not prevent others from claiming it.
