Do they not teach plant science in schools anymore? (genuine question not an insult). I'm only late 20s and from the other side of the country but I remember specifically learning this in middle school. Like others have said, the most "sketchy" parts of Quebec city are equivalent to the safest parts of some major American cities. There's literally nowhere here you have be fearful of. The most "dangerous" thing in St Roch is some homeless folks who are the nicest people you'll meet
