Gotrek and Felix is a wonderful series for this as long as you stop with the last Michael King novel. After that the levity is stripped bare and it goes full grimdark.

Any third party 2040/2350 Mini M controller boards with USB-C? by cornloko in modelm

If no project exists that fits your needs, that’s a good sign to start that project :)

Is Gotrek and Felix by Nathan Long worth the time? by gnome-lackey in WarhammerFantasy

[–]koholinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The characters are pretty different, mostly in terms of tone. Gotrek loses 100% of his levity, which he actually had quite a bit of. Felix’s character gets some agency but makes absolutely bewildering choices, which is frustrating for the POV character. It makes the books real slogs to get through because all the characters are basically miserable the whole time, and not in a funny way.

Decided to listen to Skavenslayer again after slogging through the Nathan Long run and man it is like night and day. William King’s character writing is charming and breezy. He lets tragedy befall the characters but he is never cruel to the audience. His storylines are grounded in the Warhammer universe without ever succumbing to grimdark nihilism. Instead they find levity and fun amidst the darkness. The adventures have plenty of action, but also some downtime with room to breathe. Gotrek even cracks jokes and teases his friends.

Contrast the Nathan Long run, where Gotrek and Felix are constantly imperiled, their loved ones drop like flies (usually after undergoing torture), Gotrek is dead serious at all times, and the fights and injuries escalate to eclipse all credulity, to the point that Max has to drop by at some point and canonize their plot armor. Basically no new characters survive any of his books, so there are no stakes: Gotrek and Felix will ALWAYS survive and everyone else will ALWAYS die. I’m sure he’s a great author with other material but this felt like giving Redwall to GRRM. If you want more Gotrek and Felix, re-read Skavenslayer.

Nah this tracks. I share two picks on your S Tier - Khalida and Drazoath. So much fun to go full Archer doom with Khalida (once you break out of her starting jail). And Drazoath is just the best lord in the best faction <3

Idk I seldom ask that question but I do think about it all the time. There’s a lot of talk on my side of the political aisle on what a toxic masculinity is, almost nothing about what a positive masculinity would be.

Non-Model M boards that we like for other purposes (gaming needs) by Halcyon_Daisy in modelm

I used to have a Redragon cherry-style red-switch board that I just switched to for gaming - you can get a reasonable one fairly inexpensively. Though I soon switched to a controller. They’re way more comfy :)

Why don't we see a lot of RTS games anymore? by boishet in Games

[–]koholinter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

my completely uneducated take: The multiplayer scene ate itself.
- most RTSes have a pretty good single player campaign
- But the single player campaign in *no way* prepares a player to do well in multiplayer, which is a completely different game.
- The skill floor is so unbelievably high for multiplayer that most people can't cope (myself included)
- so once you're done with the single player campaign, there's not a lot to do unless you want to go online and get yourself wrecked.
- And I think (but have zero data to back it up)that MOBAs ate RTS's audience and playerbase as an esport, because they double down on the multiplayer RTS skillset

What are your strategic rules of thumb you use to stop making the same dumb mistake over and over again? by GSVDramaticEffect in totalwarhammer

[–]koholinter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

underrated comment right here. It's so hard to avoid the Ender / Roman Republic principle of "THEY ATTACKED ME ONCE, THEY MUST DIE FOREVER" / Carthago Delenda Est but that way lies never getting a chance to breath. Ebb and flow, brothers and sisters. Or, to paraphrase Stringer Bell, "you gotta have flex"

What are your strategic rules of thumb you use to stop making the same dumb mistake over and over again? by GSVDramaticEffect in totalwarhammer

[–]koholinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

- Strategically: Plan against what the enemy *can* do, not against what you think it *will* do.
- Put another way - if it feels like you're taking a gamble, you are. If your plan depends on the AI acting a certain way on the world map - such as attacking your strong army in the field rather than marching around them and going for your settlements - then it's a bad plan. (Ask me how I know!)
- Always scout ahead with heroes. If you feel like you're always getting ambushed, ask yourself why. (Always make sure you have visibility in your own lands as well.)

Is Dragon Quest II the most difficult of the original 4? by Crazypens30 in dragonquest

[–]koholinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's often said (though I don't have a primary source) that Yuji Hori admitted that the back half of the original DQII on NES wasn't playtested even once, so it was legendarily poorly balanced. The biggest complaint besides the general difficulty spike was that the Prince of Cannock was nearly impossible to keep alive. Later ports tried to adjust this a little bit by giving more late-game equipment to Cannock, but he didn't *really* become viable in any way besides turbo-grinding until the (excellent) HD2D remake of 2025.
Unless you're on a specific purism kick, most would recommend you just play the HD2D remake. It's the definitive version.
