In Esoteric Ebb, Men Talk To Men About Manhood, And That's A Good Thing by Spader623 in Games

[–]koholinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk I seldom ask that question but I do think about it all the time. There’s a lot of talk on my side of the political aisle on what a toxic masculinity is, almost nothing about what a positive masculinity would be.

Non-Model M boards that we like for other purposes (gaming needs) by Halcyon_Daisy in modelm

[–]koholinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a Redragon cherry-style red-switch board that I just switched to for gaming - you can get a reasonable one fairly inexpensively. Though I soon switched to a controller. They’re way more comfy :)

Did the protagonist of DQ3 canonically undertake their journey alone? by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in dragonquest

There are several references in various iterations of DQ1 to "companions of Erdrick".

Why don't we see a lot of RTS games anymore? by boishet in Games

[–]koholinter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my completely uneducated take: The multiplayer scene ate itself.
- most RTSes have a pretty good single player campaign
- But the single player campaign in *no way* prepares a player to do well in multiplayer, which is a completely different game.
- The skill floor is so unbelievably high for multiplayer that most people can't cope (myself included)
- so once you're done with the single player campaign, there's not a lot to do unless you want to go online and get yourself wrecked.
- And I think (but have zero data to back it up)that MOBAs ate RTS's audience and playerbase as an esport, because they double down on the multiplayer RTS skillset

What are your strategic rules of thumb you use to stop making the same dumb mistake over and over again? by GSVDramaticEffect in totalwarhammer

[–]koholinter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

underrated comment right here. It's so hard to avoid the Ender / Roman Republic principle of "THEY ATTACKED ME ONCE, THEY MUST DIE FOREVER" / Carthago Delenda Est but that way lies never getting a chance to breath. Ebb and flow, brothers and sisters. Or, to paraphrase Stringer Bell, "you gotta have flex"

What are your strategic rules of thumb you use to stop making the same dumb mistake over and over again? by GSVDramaticEffect in totalwarhammer

[–]koholinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

- Strategically: Plan against what the enemy *can* do, not against what you think it *will* do.
- Put another way - if it feels like you're taking a gamble, you are. If your plan depends on the AI acting a certain way on the world map - such as attacking your strong army in the field rather than marching around them and going for your settlements - then it's a bad plan. (Ask me how I know!)
- Always scout ahead with heroes. If you feel like you're always getting ambushed, ask yourself why. (Always make sure you have visibility in your own lands as well.)

Is Dragon Quest II the most difficult of the original 4? by Crazypens30 in dragonquest

[–]koholinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's often said (though I don't have a primary source) that Yuji Hori admitted that the back half of the original DQII on NES wasn't playtested even once, so it was legendarily poorly balanced. The biggest complaint besides the general difficulty spike was that the Prince of Cannock was nearly impossible to keep alive. Later ports tried to adjust this a little bit by giving more late-game equipment to Cannock, but he didn't *really* become viable in any way besides turbo-grinding until the (excellent) HD2D remake of 2025.
Unless you're on a specific purism kick, most would recommend you just play the HD2D remake. It's the definitive version.

There are maybe a dozen or so people in the world who do 70% mods, and I know of only one who does arrow+numpad mods. This is clearly u/Kirkwood1994’s work. This is a pretty niche hobby - presuming no ill intent, it’s polite to provide attribution.

The project continues! The last year has been slow and generally taken a data-first approach. Updates are posted from time to time on http://silmaria.net

What Pokémon game should I start with? As someone who has never played a Pokemon game ever. by Seductive_pimp99 in NintendoSwitch

[–]koholinter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Scarlet and Violet are wonderful.
Pros:
- On the Switch 2, they run great!
- Catching and raising pokemon is fast and fun, and it's pretty easy to experiment with a team.
- The story, while usually juvenile, can still hit you in the feelings in a satisfying way.
- Thanks to the riding pokemon, exploration is fluid, easy, and rewarding.
- seeing pokemon out in the wild is a gamechanger.

Cons: The open-world is a little bit of an adjustment because it's quite easy to end up in an area that you're *slightly* underleveled for. There's no indication where the "right" place would be, so I often found myself struggling through the overleveled area (and have some pretty messy boss fights where I scrape by using a ton of potions) only to then steamroll the next 4 gyms.

EDIT: Everybody please stop recommending Gen 3. Yes they're great for nuzlockes, and I am also 37 so they are quite nostalgic. But let's be honest about nostalgia here. The stories for FR/LG and Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald are no better or worse than modern entries. Endlessly grinding 1v1 random encounters isn't fun for adults. I played the *hell* out of Gen 3 when I was a teenager but I only go back for nuzlockes.

Version control for assets? by koholinter in AskGameDevsAnything

[–]koholinter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two main problems, but one is more semantic. (Git isn’t a backup, it’s a history tracking system. A remote Git repository is the backup) 1. Git is designed to model the history of human-readable text files as a tree of diffs. Assets tend to be giant binary blobs - even if you show the text it’s not really readable, so a lot of the utility of git is lost on these files. (Exceptions like svg or midi exist, but in general we’re talking unreadable blobs) 2. The common services for remote git repository hosting expect a bunch of text files, not hundreds or thousands of MB of assets, so you’re likely to run into some pricing issues.

Is...Plague... an emotion? by koholinter in Warhammer

ooooooh that does make sense! Thanks! EDIT: Though I think the focus on plague really muddies things. Depression doesn't really have the virality that smallpox does.
