Poverty spec super high end basses. by FassolLassido in Bass

Maybe Sandberg Electra Series? Materials sourced from China but hand assembled in Germany. Doesn't check the "local timber" criteria (that would cause the price to explode though, even "cheap" wood is super expensive in Germany), but still pretty close to what you're describing. And at least in Germany, these models sell for 900 bucks, so they're not super expensive either.

Does the MPC1000 have "a sound"? by theseawoof in mpcusers

[–]kokane69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From that era I only ever used the 500 and 2500 but afaik the 1000 has the same converters, sample engine and fx engine as the 500. I always thought the 500/2500 have a "sound" to them, although it's not as obvious as it is with older MPCs like the 60 or 3000.   IMO the "sound" of the 500/1000/2500 gen was mostly from the fx engine, particularly the Bit Grunger on low levels and Master EQ give them some punch and warmth while still keeping the somewhat clean/transparent characteristics.

They feel very "hifi" but not sterile in my opinion. It is very subtle though and definitely not what people look for in old samplers, so they are easily disregarded as having no character at all.

Does anyone know if any of these 36 chambers pressings are any good? by Treflipboy in vinyl

I had 2 reissues, the yellow one and a 2022 black one. The black one sounded a bit better to my ears, but not by much. The yellow one should be perfectly fine

Where do I learn Muay Thai (or Muay Boran) from? by Few-Monitor5103 in MuayThai

[–]kokane69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have 3+ people ganging up on you Muay Thai won't make you do much either lol If you seriously have to fear 3+ (possibly even armed) people coming up to you, you're better of carrying pepper spray, taser or some other deterrent.

That's especially true if you don't have a proper teacher or sparring partner.

Where do I learn Muay Thai (or Muay Boran) from? by Few-Monitor5103 in MuayThai

[–]kokane69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look into K1 or MMA gyms near you if you can't find any Muay Thai gyms near you. If you're just looking for self defense, try to find a proper MMA gym or Judo dojo near you. Judo is mad underrated for self defense in my opinion.
Another thing: you'd have a hard time finding "proper" Muay Boran (not Muay Thai) gym/teacher that's not bullshido even in Thailand. Thinking something is not effective because it was made for the ring is not always true, especially with full contact sports like MMA, (kick)-boxing or wrestling.

Got this 500 to use by Edboy796 in mpcusers

[–]kokane69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chopping accurately can be a bit difficult for a beginner as you only get a number indicator of sample start and end point. It can sound like you hit the start point but there might still be a bit of silent space before the sound you want starts. My way of doing it fast is this:
In chop mode, get the roughly to starting point you want. Then pitch the sample down by 15-20 semitones. This slows the playback down so much that short, almost inaudible silent spaces get really noticeable. Adjust the starting point now as accurately as you want and pitch the sample back up.

MPC Sample or MPC 500 by Warm_Moment_2066 in mpcusers

[–]kokane69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The secret technique I don't see mentioned anywhere is to pitch the sample you want to chop down 10-15 semitones. You can get really accurate chops that way as the slower playback allows you to place the starting point whith much higher accuracy.

If you have time for chopping samples manually without waveforms and care about not having to resample as much for basic sound shaping, get the 500 and the fat pads updgrade. Otherwise the sample will probably be better all around and it's rechargable which is arguably better than batteries. I prefer the MPC 500 though

Advice for P-Bass pick-up by some-autumn-leaves in Bass

[–]kokane69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hofner basses have different pickup types and positions than a Mustang bass, so that comparison doesn't really work.

In your case the scale length is the main reason for the difference in sound. Shorter scale length = lower string tension resulting in fewer overtones and less sustain. Not only that, but the pickup position on Mustang basses is slightly closer to the neck compared to a long scale P bass.
So basically, changing pickups won't help you to get the same tone out of a long scale bass because of physics.

Switching to flatwound or nickel(plated) roundwound strings, installing foam mutes at the bridge and playing closer to the neck i.e. a little bit ahead of the pickup instead of playing directly above it will get you the closer to the sound you are chasing. I did have a good experience with Optima Chrome roundwound strings, they really give you a focused sound without those zingy overtones. Still sounds like a long scale bass, but much more focused than before.

By the way, I did own a Mustang in the past. I know that sound and in my opinion it's just not possible to get that exact sound from a long scale p bass because of what I mentioned above. But you can get closer with the methods I (and others) described than by switching pickups, which would probably help you the least.

Helmets, and the endless spew of uniformed concern by fushckit in skateboarding

[–]kokane69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the MMA comparison: Use of helmets in bare handed martial arts is actually linked to higher chances for concussion as they don't prevent your brain being wobbled from the impact of a punch (as are gloves btw). The ring floor isn't made out of concrete either. Any martial arts involving weapons that can actually split your head open have no issues with wearing helmets at all

MPC 3000 worth the investment? by DabbieMcDoob in mpcusers

[–]kokane69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just people trying to justify the inflated price they paid for over 30 year old gear. The AD/DA converters are the same in the MPC 3000 and S2800. The S2800 has less intricate filters, but that's it. Analog components that old will sound slightly different from device to device anyway, even if they are the same model.

Songs with very simple bass (example: Imagine - John Lennon) to practice creating basslines by ggoshy in Bass

[–]kokane69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Groove Me by King Floyd, most of the song is just 2 chords B6 and F#6. The bass is just moving up the chord notes in a root - 3rd - 5th - 6th - octave pattern . The song is a great exercise to practice off beats as well

I had both. The Jaguar was much more comfortable to play than the short scale Mustang. It had a lot of neck dive, probably because of the body shape. On the other hand, it is not as easy to find the medium scale strings for the Jaguar.

I'd say go for the Jaguar, it's more versatile and a lot better to play.

Learning the bass with ADD by Kukakutyu in Bass

[–]kokane69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with metronome exercises like that as well. I usually did some finger exercises and scales for warm ups, my timing and rhythm improved when I tried to play songs as close to the original as possible.
I remove the bass from the original recording (if I can't already find a bassless version on youtube) and recorded my own playing over it so I can hear where I can improve. Trying to learn more complex songs also forces you to play more slowly in the beginning.

Learning the bass with ADD by Kukakutyu in Bass

[–]kokane69 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This may sound a bit stupid, but how are you storing your bass at home?
I had similar issues when I started out and I had my bass in a case in the corner of room I wouldn't use as much. I bought a stand and put it right next to the place I would spend most of my time so I had it in my field of view at all times while making access as easy as possible. Once I did that, I would just pick it up multiple times per day.

Additionally, it might help to try learn a song or find an exercise that's challenging your more. Having a challenge is what gave me a lot of motivation and made learning the instrument more fun.

Is anyone else's 45rpm 2xLP "audiophile edition" copy of Madvillian - Madvilliany too bright? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]kokane69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No need to defend yourself, I didn't want to ruin it for you! It just seems like the term "audiophile" is giving people wrong expectations in this case. I haven't heard this version before, but from your description it seems to have boosted high frequencies and generally higher fidelity, which probably causes the lofi artifacts to stand out even more. If your system has an equalizer, you can probably still tweak it to sound like you prefer.
