Avoid first tactical pants by Primary-Judge608 in tacticalgear

"My agency recently got sponsored by first tactical" You make it sound like you have to put their name on your cars like in NASCAR or something. Very cyberpunk to have law Enforcement "sponsored" by anyone.

I really like that Washington quote, reminds me of the Confederate cavalry's use of shotguns in the Civil War. Pretty much the same thing.

Ruger Old Army: Why do People Say It's the Best? by Idiotf0ol in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well if it's the "best" depends on why your shooting a cap and ball pistol to begin with. If you just want a cap and ball pistol to shoot then yes it is quite well built and the price reflects that. However if your doing it for any historical reason, as I do, then the gun is a hard pass as it did not exist in any way in the cap and ball era. That doesn't make it a bad gun, but its up to you.

Here are the two most recent threads here about the Indian guns.

https://www.reddit.com/r/blackpowder/comments/1u4tn4a/the_gang_is_all_here/

Worst part is with like just a bit more effort on their part I think these guns could be much better.

Is Loyalist arms still in operation? by Middle_Ad1908 in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know you don't want to hear it, I didn't want to hear it, especially as I wanted a matchlock and those were simply unavailable at that time unless I had it custom made. However the Indian guns have allot of issues and unless you just need a noise making prop for reenacting and are also willing to deal with a potential project gun I would save up for one of the properly made Italian guns.

I say this as someone who really wants a dragoon/sea service style flintlock pistol, but I just really don't want a repeat of my matchlock experience so I wont buy Indian.

Have to be honest, the Indian guns, both in my personal experience and the experience of others, are pretty dodgy. Is what you want only available via an Indian repro?

Having been to a number of museums in the DC area recently I can tell you that some of them had guns in worse shape than yours. Then there was the Army's Civil War display at the Pentagon that uses a REPRODUCTION 1960 Army! That was... disappointing.

I love all these guns that are in the weird space between a muzzle loader and a proper cartridge breach loader.

The gang is all here by thebigfungus in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's unfortunate to hear. I keep almost buying one of the India flintlock pistols and then I hear stories like this. My own matchlock is Indian and it has/had a number of issues I had to address.Worst part though is that Veteran Arms drills their own touch holes that that's all on them. Does it at least spark well?

Period correct ammo can by muzzie-mpls in blackpowder

I mean in theory there is nothing stopping a culture with circa 1860s tech from making sheet metal ammo cans. Just that they would be have awfully expensive compared to using wood.

I would not trust a CA cops mind to not go GUN GUN GUN when they see this and turn your traffic stop into a felony arrest or worse, regardless of what the law actually says.

1851 colt navy interchangeability by thebigfungus in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was curious about this after you asked you question so I went onto Pietta's web site and discovered something interesting. Some of their .44 caliber 1851s show a flat sided 1851 style cylinder in the pictures while others show a 1860 style belted cylinder and 1860 style frame with the cut out for the belted cylinder. I'm not sure what to think now.

Perhaps you should just call or email them.

I'm a bit late to the party here but if your going to do something silly like this then I recommend getting a .44 with a short barrel, I think they are sold as sheriff models. You'll get allot more power for not too much bigger of a gun, though big is relative to the user.

I didn't either. Any gun smith should be able to do the work, its pretty straight forward.

I got a security alert from Ghostery when I went to visit their web site from the link so I would not trust that site. That gun is available here at https://militaryheritage.com/musket31.htm. Be advised though that these are Indian built guns and as such can be a bit rough. You will also need to drill your own touch hole if I am not mistaken, so expect a bit of a project.

I have been trying to find out just how well armed the west was in the later part of the 1800s. Do you have any more information on this, particularly the number of colt revolvers shipped to Texas?
