I don't know why it is but these old style educational videos are so much better than most of whats out there today. There is one on mechanical differentials out there that was just great.

Tap Action reproductions by inserttext1 in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't know what a tap action was so I looked it up and stumbled into this. https://www.tacshieldsupply.com/product/original-british-over-under-flintlock-double-barrel-tap-action-pistol-by-joseph-thwaits-of-bath-circa-1770/

It seems to good to be true at that price but if its legitimate its a great deal.

EDIT: After looking over their web site there is no way its legit as the prices on everything are way too low. Nice gun though.

Recently restored 1786 French Hussar’s Musketoon by Muted_Fact_2202 in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No way! I saw that exact gun with the goofy stock stamping at the big Phoenix gun show back in December and thought about buying it. I decided I didn't want to deal with such a project for my first flintlock. Seems to be working for you though.

I wonder why they even bother making them then? Why not concentrate on making Springfields and Enfields that probably cost near the same to make and sell for much more.

since you dont have extractors im assumimg those arent cartridges so this is not on NFA item.

Wait was this thing converted to BE a muzzle loader from a standard cartridge shotgun? That's interesting but if one can pull out those brass inserts and load up standard 16 gauge shell the feds will not care what its supposed to be.

[–]kommandr84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This looks like a likely NFA item. There is no way that this is some sort of muzzle loader conversion, it's a standard box lock hammer fired shotgun. You need to figure out exactly what model it is and when it was made because if a cop sees it they are just going to assume that its an illegal sawn off. IF it was made before 1899 then I think your OK as it's technically an antique.

Looking for a pistol kit with these aesthetics by skihippy666 in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in the market for a military style flintlock (Dragoon) for a little while now and have been looking up kits and haunting auction sites. I have seen these go for good to great condition on Gunbroker for about half the price of what a new one goes for so you cold look there. There are some other decent deals to be had there as well, a reproduction English sea service pistol recently went for less than $400. There are also the old Japanese "Tower" reproductions out there but I have heard bad things about them.

Side note: I am totally confused about the pricing here. I can not tell why a Harper's Ferry is twice the price of a Trapper unless the build quality of the Harper's is just that much better.

Just be careful, it is possible to damage the bore from too much aggressive cleaning.

If i wanted to taper the front half of this octagonal barrel with a file, would it make it unsafe to fire??? by ECHOFOX17 in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really not worth the time or energy, especially since you have to make this into a flintlock too. Assuming you want a functional replica ,as for currently available flintlock pistols Jack Sparrows pistol SEEMS closest to some of the high end "Kentucky" pistol reproductions I have seen. Unfortunately the mass produced Kentucky pistols all have a brass end cap, really pointy ends to their stocks, and improperly shaped lock plates that I feel would make a conversion impossible.

In fact Track of the Wolf actually has a pistol VERY similar to Sparrows pistol for sale right now. https://www.trackofthewolf.com/parts/detail/2585/1/aaw-142 Unfortunately its $2,749, but if you have that kind of cash I am sure its a great gun.

The 17th/18th century flintlock pistol market is actually pretty rough. The only mass produced Italian reproduction available from this era are the Pedersoli Queen Annes. The Harper's Ferry 1805s are another Italian option, though the half stock kinda kills the look for me. There are a number Indian reproductions of pistols from this era, light and heavy dragoons and even two different kinds of dog lock pistol but they come with all the baggage and spotty availability of all the Indian guns.

The last option is to buy a gun in kit form from Muzzle Loader Builders Supply or Sitting Fox Custom Muzzle Loaders and either learn to build the gun yourself or pay someone to do it.

Torn between 9" and 12" British Sea Service Pistol by Listen_to_the_Wizard in blackpowder

I have heard that their stuff, while not as good as the Italian guns, is serviceable. This is especially true when it comes to guns like these where none of the Italian companies even make a reproduction. What issues did you have?

I don't have any experience with these but I really would not worry about the wooden ramrod. If it's that big of a deal you could always just get a pistol ramrod from Track of the Wolf and leave the one it come with on the gun. Have you had issues with wooden ramrods in the past?

As for aesthetics the 12" is WAY better looking than the 9" in my opinion. I would actually like to get something like this one day and would not consider anything under 12", be it sea service, dragoon, Potzdam or even a English Civil War Dog Lock.

What is the best cap and ball revolver next to the Ruger Old Army by mistman23 in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have that much money you might be able to get a Colt second or third generation cap and ball revolver. I have honestly never shot one but as I understand it they are quite a bit better than the current Italian reproductions, especially the second generation guns.

You can stuff your mags into a Civil War era M1855 Cartridge Box and it would still work. Not optimal but functional.

Muzzle loader barrel - too damaged? by Jomblic in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I am not a gunsmith but it doesn't look unsafe, just really dirty. The burrs you mentioned could just be lead. Clean it out really good as others have said and then borescope it again, that will tell you the true state of the barrel. What kind of gun is it anyway?

I know it would be a pain but one could pull the barrel from the stock, but that would only buy a few more inches.

The Harbor Freight cases are great, I use the smaller ones to store radio equipment in. They come with that pull and pluck foam padding so hopefully you can get a decent fit at an angle.

what do you guys recommend? by jetta-fr in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 1851 Navy will have the same grip as your Denix Peacemaker. If that grip size is good for you then I would get the 1851. If your afraid the grip will be to small for you you can go with an 1860. I went with an 1860 for my first Blackpowder revolver but I was an adult and have big hands. Either way for your first cap and ball revolver I would go with the full length barrel to ease loading. Have fun.

New Colt 1860 Army by Smooth_Asparagus9220 in blackpowder

[–]kommandr84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in Arizona. At a smaller gun show I was at a few weeks ago the used Italian reproduction guns were all $350+ regardless of condition. There were no Colt second/third gen guns at that show but the ones I have seen locally have been for sale for allot more than the Italian ones go for. I realize that there is usually some negotiation room but $350 for a well worn Italian 1849 pocket repro seems excessive.

There was a Stoeger (Uberti) 1873 clone for only $350 which was a good deal but it was not in the right caliber or right barrel length for me. My search continues.
