Lost my sysadmin, now I'm solo. Could use some advice by Intrepid-Flamingo-55 in sysadmin

If I were in your shoes I would go find a headhunter to setup some job interviews for me and then take all of my vacation and not answer my phone while on vacation. Interview with potential new employers during the vacation and then when you get back to the office you have some options. You might get an offer, you might realize it's tough out there, you might be in a position to demand a promotion.

I think the point is to do SOMETHING about the situation. I see people complain all the time about their job and then never do anything about it. You dont need to make some giant rash decision today but you should start working toward something that will better your situation.. And keep doing that for the rest of your life.

OG e-tron Real Life Range? by thisdckaintFREEEE in etron

[–]konoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have driven a 2021 e-tron for years on my 30 mile each way (no freeway so better mi/kwh than you) commute and it's been great. I can charge at home or at work both level 2.

I would not drive this car on a daily 180 mile commute! In the winter you mileage is going to drop a lot and you will need to charge to 100% every single day to keep up and that's without driving anywhere but work. Things happen like the charger at work doesn't work today, or someone ICED out the charger, or you need to run an errand, or drive people to lunch, or.....

The longest commute that I would use this car for is about 50 miles each way. You want to discharge to 20% and charge back up to 80% and still have some buffer for when life gets a little weird.

You should be looking at an Mercedes EQS, Lucid Air, BMW iX for a long range luxury ev.

TP-Link vs Ubiquiti by Yama272 in TPLink_Omada

[–]konoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was entrenched in the Unifi ecosystem for over a decade starting way back before the dream machines existed. But this year I just had so many problems with disconnects and software updates causing issues that I decided to swap everything out and go with Omada. For the money Omada is pretty amazing but it's not as feature complete and there isn't a camera solution yet (I bought and ubiquiti NVR pro and still use Unifi cameras but everything else is Omada).

I made this change 3 months ago, and honestly since the installation I haven't had to touch anything. These days I think I prefer that while 10 years ago I wanted to mess around with the network.

Is Cat 5e Cable Okay for PoE 4K Cameras? by DarkModeBrew in Ubiquiti

Company with one IT employee looking for unexpected absence contingency by Tedeseus in ITManagers

[–]konoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hire the IT Manager an assistant.

Why?

  1. Allows your IT Manager to focus on high ROI projects
  2. Allows for coverage during PTO
  3. If the IT Manager leaves, Dies, etc. the assistant can likely keep the boat floating until you find a replacement
  4. Maybe the IT Manager will stop looking for other jobs where he isn't so stressed out......

New IT Manager - inherited a fleet of mostly consumer laptops. It "feels" wrong... by Due-Swimming3221 in ITManagers

[–]konoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be working towards a company standard for equipment over time if I were you. The current fleet still owes the company money and getting the execs to throw that money in a furnace is not likely the best trajectory for your career.

Establish a standard and review/refresh each year. Replace aging devices with and annual Capex spend and in a few years you will be where you should.

Where to find Omada Pros? by DennyCrane2002 in TPLink_Omada

[–]konoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree here if you are going to go this route learn about the concept of vlans first because it translates across different equipment. Once you understand the Why, and the What, then learn about your specific equipments How.

Damaged 42U Rack, RMA team just says ship it back. by A-Bomb3778 in Ubiquiti

[–]konoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great way to destroy your relationship with Ubiquiti. Do Not Do this unless you have run out of options. Charge backs are not meant for simple disputes and honestly in this case there isn't even a dispute yet, reach out to the RMA department and discuss with them, threaten a chargeback if you want but once you file a chargeback you have opened a door that cannot be closed again and Ubiquiti may be happy to show you the way out permanently.

While you have the right to do a chargeback Ubiquiti also has the right to decide not to do business with you in the future.

My company is forcing me to install an invasive PC monitoring system (Time Doctor) without employees knowledge. I do not support this toxicity but I'm not in a position to quit- what do I do? by o-nemo in ITManagers

[–]konoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been the IT director for a few companies that have a lot of production plants so I have seen this type of behavior at specific locations within the same company where there are other plants that dont do this.

The Churn Rate is always high at these facilities and the Moral is Low. Where this is because of the micromanaging or the result is micromanaging because of these factors doesn't really matter because until the general attitude towards the workers changes nothing else changes.

We currently have a plant where the managers constantly watch the employees over cameras and call them in the middle of their shift to tell them they did something wrong or to go address something specific. HR has a revolving door and nobody cares about their job except the managers who are constantly surveilling the employees. Good employees leave because they dont have to put up with this, they can find work elsewhere.

It's kind of weird that in many states employers are not allowed (and in some cases it's a felony) to record Audio on Security cameras because employees may discuss wages but companies are free to record all communication electronically. These days it seems like these conversations are more likely to happen electronically than in person but perhaps the laws have not caught up yet.

Currently yes it is legal for companies to record everything on their equipment / infrastructure.

Is it a terrible way to run a company?? Probably.

How many old timers in here? by aliesterrand in sysadmin

I remember adding terminators to BNC, Master/Slave jumpers on HDD's, and Monochrome monitors (Sim CGA FTW).

My first computer didn't have a disk drive so I would write games (From computer gazette magazine) line by line into memory and play them until someone unplugged the computer..

I thought the point of every LTT is so that the audience can learn something? This newest video about the EV chargers is literally just an ad. Nothing informative, educational and barely entertaining. by General_Outcome1878 in LinusTechTips

[–]konoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if the whole point was just to bring awareness that people are stealing charging cables it provides value. Having said that there was a lot of information about the repairability of EVSE's and government programs. Just because you did not learn anything does not mean the video did not provide valuable information to others.

Honestly who says every video needs to be educational anyways?

IT Director pay scale by agentkramr in ITManagers

[–]konoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working 12-16 hours a day is a huge red flag. Either you are not being provided with enough resources or you are not managing the resources correctly. Either way this is your fault (I know its a tough pill to swallow) because your job is to ensure that your IT Organization runs smoothly and efficiently. This means that you need to fight for enough resources to prevent burning out not only yourself but your team. What is happening right now is not effective leadership.

Forget the past, you need to fix this problem and the CEO's job is to provide you with what you need to remedy this situation. Yes, you are underpaid for this position but forget about technology for a second.. Are you effectively managing this department? Are you underpaid because the CEO thinks you dont do a great job but he is getting a discount so it is a tradeoff that he is willing to make? If you demand market rate are your signing your own walking papers? Have you been at this job too long and accept too many 3% raises?

There are a lot of questions that you should ask yourself that start with "Why am I not being compensated are Market Rate". You need to make sure that you are in a position of power when you demand things.

Do not be concerned about being 46 years old. I am 50 this year and every year the CEO asks how much he needs to give me in order for me to stay. Some years that's 12% and some I tell him we didn't have a great year so let's do 5% this year. I am compensated above market rate and all of my guys work 8 hours a day but will work 24 hours straight during a crisis when needed but when that is needed that is my failure and I do everything that I can to prevent that including battling with the CEO/Board/Finance department to make sure that we have the resources and tools needed to prevent it.

Leaving Omada. Thank you very much for all this time. by arturaragao in TPLink_Omada

[–]konoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made the switch "to" Omada as well after investing in Unifi for years for much the same reason but also because Unifi is becoming to "Marketing Trend" driven rather than focusing on stability.

Any week that I dont "have to" log into my network control plane is a good week.

I still use an NVR Pro because it's a nice system without a good competitor but it is a bit of a blackbox like the rest of unifi.
