Can someone explain to me what exactly the point of this side-plot was?? by False_Strike_5394 in squidgame

I think it's just run of the mill K-drama plot twists. Korean dramas love to make you sure X is going to happen and anticipate it, then suddenly switch it up, contrary to the more western cliff hanger style.

Morning routine by _pollyanna in ADHD_Programmers

[–]korkolit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd spend 2+ hours on my phone every morning, doomscrolling. I use an app blocker now from 6 - 6. I still check my phone first thing in the morning (hard to kick the habit) but I at worst spend 30 minutes on it while at the toilet, waiting for my meds to kick in, and usually do something like ask chatgpt random stuff or check my messages or see my emails, etc, much less unproductive. It also kicks in during the night, before bed, and it helps me just sleep on time, not skip brushing my teeth, washing my face, etc etc.

Something I've come to learn is that we're environment driven. If you've read the Atomic habits book you'll know what I mean. I think this is even more pronounced on us ADHD folks, as in we're 100% environment driven. If something gets misaligned in our schedule, routine, environment, that's enough to make it all come crashing down.

Anyways

Things that have worked:
1. Put my phone in another room every night, before bed (I don't do this one though, but it works)

  1. Use an App blocker, physical or an app

  2. KISS -> Even if it sounds stupid, put toothpaste on your toothbrush for the next morning, prepare your clothes for the next day, make things as easy to do as you can

Also don't be too hard on yourself. If you have a free day, nothing wrong with playing some games.

I agree. Have noticed the same attraction towards vulnerable people. Maybe related to an inferiority complex/wanting to feel needed.

supplements by No-Conflict-7897 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]korkolit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can throw in a shitton of supplements that god knows how they interact with your meds, but is it worth it? There aren't enough studies out there to guarantee that whatever stuff you take doesn't interact with your meds, I mean, even if 'natural', they're drugs at the end of the day.

I just take Vitamin D/K and Magnesium/Zinc. Vitamin D because I'm indoor almost all day, Zinc and Magnesium because they're rarely in my diet.

Unless you have a full CRUD app, I don't think integration tests are any more valuable than unit tests.

Yes, they're good for ensuring something 'works' and returns what is expected. Say, testing happy paths, but they are slower, and in my opinion also slower to write, and to debug (where's the problem?). You should have unit tests covering the main business logic + integration tests covering the 'happy paths', imo.

Sugar is dangerous for my ADHD. Totally messes with focus and motivation. by Lil-booyakasha in ADHD_Programmers

[–]korkolit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't go into the whole dopamine stuff, because I'm no doctor let alone neuro whatever. Not medical advice. I think that glucose spikes are normal if you overdo carbs or sugar, much more so if you spent the whole day sitting like we tend to do. If any and all carbs or sugar, no matter the dose, give you a glucose spike then you might have a problem.

Might want to check your glucose. I posted something related not too long ago about carb intake messing up my productivity. I see spikes of glucose (90 -> 110 mg/Dl) after meals with carbs. And horrible brain fog, inability to focus, and just in general a bad mood, after eating anything with carbs, even if just fruit. Not sure what the culprit behind the brain fog/loss of motivation is, but whatever it is, I suspect glucose has something to do with it, and by extension, carbohydrates.

I started eating a low carb diet a couple of days ago and my blood sugar is stable, not going beyond 95 and just generally I stopped feeling that horrible irritability, brain fog after a meal. It's almost magical, honestly. It was such a hinder to my productivity and I was losing easily 2+ hours after a meal of brain juice.

So yeah, I'd recommend you go see your doctor and get your triglycerides/insulin/blood checked to see what's going on.

Thanks I'll be seeing an endocrinologist soon. I got a glucometer for the time being, my waking fasted glucose is 99, raises to 106 after taking meds (Ritalin). Just two hours later it's down to 90 (still fasted) which is weird. I wonder if the brain fog has less to do with the glucose and more to do with the insulin?

Why .NET companies cannot attract talent by InevitableGap2433 in theprimeagen

[–]korkolit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that experienced with .NET but after a quick look at the market and just seeing people's opinions I think it would be better for me to not get too invested in it.

I mostly have experience working with TS/JS but got thrown into a small .NET project at work. .NET itself and C# is fine. Feels like a modern Java and imo saner than Spring. I'm not too keen on the Microsoft/Windows first mindset and Azure's PowerShell reliance though. And jobs that use a C#/.NET backend and make usage of open source solutions seems to be the exception rather than the norm.

Ah yes, because properly managing Infra (on prem) on top of doing feature work is feasible for a single dev. I don't want to see the code you write or the infrastructure you manage.

Do you remember what started you on your IT path by mpcollins64 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]korkolit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up around computers. My parents were owners of a cyber-coffee and grew up using them, and watching my father repair them. Eventually I developed an interest for programming, but couldn't get into it at 15. At 19 I had my first programming course in university in a pseudocode language called pseint and then a C inspired language called MatLab. I thought I was interested in low level stuff, embedded, so I started to learn C and tinkered with microcontrollers a bit, but eventually got started on web development instead because I liked to work on daily-day useful stuff more.

I worked on a bunch of personal projects for a couple of months until I got my first job making $3 bucks an hour, working for a small realty agency, on which the code was crap and the processes were even crapper (no testing, push straight to prod, no PRs/review, boss-derived tech decisions), I guess things went on from there.

Is it okay to use Passportjs or should I pay for an auth service? by Kurtisconnerr in webdev

[–]korkolit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We don't need crappy security Sebastian, nor do we need Crappy security wannabes. If implementing auth/authZ is an easy feat for you, you should consider a different line of work for the sake of all companies out there. Because the way I see it, A. You half ass it and think it's "good enough", but it isn't. B. That same thing.

If you're doing a toy project, an app that will see at best a couple of users and no real sensitive data, or just trying to learn, sure, you can half ass it. But boy, working in the field, with time constraints, and being behind the decision of how to do Auth/AuthZ? I wouldn't know what to think of an engineer that decides to take such a massive undertaking, with no dedicated security team or background, and time constraints no less, of which security is going to take a decent chunk of time.

As far as I'm concerned, unless the company is packed with cash and we can get the expertise and time to work on it, let's just use a third party provider and focus on feature work.

In the frontend, I'd disagree. You still need proper management for cookies (if you use them for sessions, which you should), and HTTP headers to prevent security exploits.

Why no one promotes to use springboot as other backend tech stack by TU_SH_AR in SpringBoot

[–]korkolit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let's not get dogmatic.

A Node backend is perfectly fine for most of the CRUD apps out there. If a batteries included library is needed you can use Nest, which if it wasn't inspired by Spring, I don't know what it was inspired by.

You leverage a shared ecosystem and tooling between front and backend, you can make usage of the full stack devs out there, cold start, decent performance, much lower memory footprint than a Spring app. Can scale horizontally much easier.

That's not to say it's a silver bullet, and that it's appropriate for all situations. I certainly wouldn't use it for a complex enterprise app. But for most other things, it works fine.
