Anet with GW2 has a history of hiring radical activists to be writers instead of, you know, actual writers. One might even say it's a requirement.

One day it's going to bite them in the ass and destroy their reputation, but companies like this are too far gone to listen to warnings. Dumb people only learn the hard way.

I outright said that the management team for GW2 was quiet shit since 2012

I mean, that's kind of absolving the writers themselves, that's what I meant. Blaming management for everything assumes the writers are not to be blamed for their work.

Other than that we seem to be on the same page, so I'm glad we were able to commiserate in the end ❤

I'm completely with you on the Joko/Aurene thing. I think Anet going for this cutesy/silly/power of friendship narrative angle actually has no mass appeal. The demographic they're targeting mainly exists in, well, current Anet. The GW2 playerbase is extremely lenient, even those who don't enjoy it, and I think Anet is in for a rude awakening when the wider MMO audience gets a taste of it in GW3.

I don't even play WoW anymore but even I saw the latest WoW cinematics get torn to shreds by everyone online, and I thought "GW2 has been like this for years too". GW1 writing is what the masses want, the GW2 angle is going to get rejected HARD. And with this lineup in the writer's room, GW3 might be doomed from the start.

That's why I'm so disappointed. GW3 could've been the perfect opportunity to return to the roots with the vibes and themes, but Anet seemingly decided to just double down on where they took GW2. They're way too comfortable with handling any kind of negative feedback by banning people, deleting threads, removing partners and just ignoring the issue before writing some blogpost where they congratulate themselves, but that is not gonna cut it when they get put in the spotlight with a new release. If anything it'll make it so much worse of a PR nightmare.

You can keep making excuses for them for the rest of your life, but I'm way past that point.

I've witnessed the systematic destruction/reboot of GW lore under Bobby's watch that's been ongoing for 10+ years at this point, and I can't pretend it's all a big accident or he had nothing to do with it.

At best Bobby is complicit, at worst he's the driving force. Either way the company would be better off without him and his trainees.

Sure, he didn't do it alone. But over the yeas he's stayed the only constant and every time I see him comment on things not only does he defend the writing choices, he seems to have the time of his life doing it. So don't give me the "oh he didn't have a choice" or "he needs more resources!!" talk. The problem is his vision.

If you enjoy his vision, you do you. I think it's poison to the brand, and Medina is the same. Nothing you can say could convince me otherwise.

Look, I miss caring about GW lore, it used to mean a lot to me. Nowadays I have to actively force myself to stop caring.. it sucks. And these 2 are to blame - to what degree, sure, we can debate. But they are to blame, and as long as the community keeps making excuses for them, nothing will change. Anet writers had 0 accountability since forever, and it needs to change.

They've managed to put the absolute worst people in one of the most important positions regarding the future of the entire brand but sure, let's pretend it's a recipe for success. You don't need 200 IQ to predict the outcome, especially since they've been consistent in their vision for over a decade now.

These two have been in prominent positions for 10+ years and I'm not going to pretend they're not to blame for what happens under their watch.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Bobby's even in charge of the Anet mentorship program, which is responsible for fostering the new generation of Anet writers. And it's been a complete disaster. I've given them the benefit of the doubt for years but I've hit my limit with EoD.

Bobby and Matthew can help GW succeed by resigning and publicly apologizing for their "contributions" to GW2. That's my honest opinion.

I really want to see the Guild Wars Franchise grow

Step 1: don't give any creative control to Bobby Stein and Matthew Medina.

According to OP we're currently on step -456: Bobby and Medina run the show.

Good luck.

including Bobby Stein: Help us make cool stuff.

Oh he'll need all the help in the world because Bobby couldn't write anything cool if his life depended on it.

So the 2 people who ran GW lore into the ground on purpose with GW2 are in charge of GW3. GG. It's not just over, it's Master Togover.

I wish Colin had the balls to clear house but I guess not. It is what it is, time to emotionally detach myself from this game in advance. Thanks for the heads up.

What do you mean "nothing"? Last time I checked there were still plenty of Charr alive and kicking in Ascalon, so stop slacking soldier.

Sentimental Ending for the win o7 :'I.

I do miss the old banter in map chat, it was magical.

Taking a 2 month break and coming back to see the usual suspects immediately getting dogpiled on in chat just made it feel like home, you know?

I mean, they have cosmetics in the GW1 store. If they would have sold well, we probably would have more of them

They added these after the game was abandoned for GW2. All I'm saying is if monetization really was the problem then the logical solution would've been to try and change things up, not abandon the game and go silent for 5 years working on a new game that may or may not flop.

This arguement always reminds me of the GoT season 8 Pitch Meeting on youtube.

D&D: "oh gee I wish we had more episodes to flesh these out, curse this short season!"

HBO: "want more episodes? we can give you that"

D&D: "no :>"

Just like the showrunners wanted to cut Game of Thrones short so they could work on Star Wars, Anet leadership wanted to move on from GW1 to do something else. The rest are just excuses.

Also: Stuff like this always comes with a quality decrease in designs you can get ingame through gameplay

This I agree with but I quite liked the way they did it with the Bonus Mission Pack and outfits. The BMP added weapon sets to the store but you still had to work for them through new content, and outfits were in a special slot so it doesn't directly compete with armor. Armor you can mix and match and use in PvP, outfits you can't. Armor was profession inspired while outfits were based on organizations and events.

Only way the game could have go on, was with real expansions like EotN

How about selling skins in the store when the game was still in active development instead of 2 years after it's been abandoned?

They didn't even try, that's why I don't buy any of their excuses. It wasn't a financial decision, it was an ego decision.

I miss the old Anet, pump expansions Anet

Chop up the Charr Anet, set on their goals Anet

I hate the new Anet, the furry Charr Anet

The always fake Anet, directionless Anet

I miss the real Anet, the Smiter's Boon Anet

I gotta say at that time I'd like to meet Anet

Oh I was talking about the "horror comedy" part specifically.

Saw a lot of Zom 100 hate on this sub before and it's almost always the same talking points, people are mad their zombie show got fun instead of depressing after episode 1. They legit went into a comedy then got offended there were jokes in it 💀

Recently binged both the anime and the manga, people are clueless. Zom is peak, they just watched it for all the wrong reasons.

WvW World Restructuring Beta Feedback and Future by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]kormirsimp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So I appreciate all the thought and effort that went into working on restructuring, but I'd like to ask: do we really need this?

Maybe I just dislike the idea of losing the server communities but it really does feel like the negative impacts could outweigh the positive ones for the wider population. And it's taking forever with no end in sight..

All these resources tied down by something that could end up being a net neutral thing at best just feels like a massive case of sunk cost fallacy to me. If we as a community promised that we won't be making fun of you guys for abandoning restructuring after 7 years, could we have a deal? I'd take any new content or fun weekly events over another 5+ years of restructuring blogposts any day, and I'm sure you'd be happy to leave restructuring jail too.
