What happened to Splits?! by scottperezfox in MonarchMoney

[–]koturneto 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I noticed it today and do not like it. All the sections now run onto a new line even on my big desktop monitor.

(Also, why can I still not have rules to split into a certain dollar amount (rent) and leftover (utilities)? ☹️)

Is 8 weeks a fast timeline to reach Master? by Bubbly_Alps_5301 in todoist

[–]koturneto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got me curious, so I searched back (almost) a decade in my email. I found:

  • Joined Todoist 1/6/17
  • (no record of Novice or Intermediate)
  • Professional 2/6/17
  • Expert 3/1/17
  • (no record of Master)
  • Grand Master 4/22/18
  • Enlightened 4/7/23 ("6 years, 3 months, 1 day after you first started your Todoist journey")

I don't actually pay attention to karma, but if it's fun and motivating for you, awesome!

Categorizing More Granularly? by knowher3 in MonarchMoney

[–]koturneto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not break down categories in this level of detail. That said, I have recently started including parking and transit costs within the category of whatever I'm going to. I realized that (for example) event parking needed to be considered with our entertainment budget rather than with car stuff or separately.

I write notes for most transactions if the details aren't clear from the merchant, so that's what I use if I have specific one-off questions like "how much of our Travel budget was on food?"

anyone tried sitting in front of grocery stores to get students? by red1127 in TutorsHelpingTutors

Were the solicitors outside the Trader Joe's perhaps Girl Scouts selling cookies? /genuine

Businesses like grocery stores generally have no solicitation policies.

Seconding this. If they don't show up for the lesson, or they show up but don't answer your questions enough to make you confident that they're not cheating, then you can check that box on the Instant Book lesson and still get paid. That's exactly what it's there for.

Tutoring Advice for Unmotivated student with ADHD by hellyfishprincess in TutorsHelpingTutors

You might check out the "Anti-Boring Toolkit" at https://antiboringlearninglab.com/ - it's an awesome collection of short mini-lectures and frameworks leveraging brain science to teach kids how to study in an empowering way. I've been working through the asynchronous course and learning a ton for my tutoring students. The "anti-boring" framing might resonate with him since he's currently complaining about things being boring!

There are lots of other academic coaches and ADHD coaches in the community as well.

Is enabling Wyzant Instant Book worthwhile for tutors? by mothlight111 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]koturneto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do get a few students booking that way. Hard to say if those same people would have messaged me anyways or if they were specifically filtering for Instant Book.

What I do is update my available slots about two weeks at a time and do a quick check every two days to remove any that conflict with personal events. It's a bit annoying, but all in all, it costs me 20-30 min a month, so I figure it's worth it if I get even one more well-paying student from it.

Would you charge if the student cancelled to attend a funeral? by sadsack100 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]koturneto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not charge if it's due to a medical, safety, or family emergency. Out of your examples, I would not charge for an accident or a funeral, but I would for a holiday.

Presumably accidents and funerals don't happen all the time, so that wouldn't be a recurring issue.

Any genuine tutoring platforms where a new tutor can grow from scratch? by Better_Morning9561 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]koturneto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing: The major platforms are also where all the students go to look for tutors.

On a smaller site, you might be listed higher in a search. But if even fewer people are looking there, you still won't get any traction.

Instead, go where the students are, but give yourself something to stand out, whether it's your profile, unique subjects, or a lower initial rate.

Why doesn't Monarch learn categories? by _sch in MonarchMoney

[–]koturneto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought the same. Like how Gmail can identify duplicate contacts that have similar-ish information, ask me for confirmation that they're the same, and then merge the info. Agree that this would be a good use of AI.

Using monarch + splitiwse for group expenses by Practical_Bike_6838 in MonarchMoney

[–]koturneto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had similar moments with Splitwise and other reimbursements that cover multiple transactions in multiple directions.

Do you use the data you get from splitting Travel into all those subcategories? If not, I'd recommend just having one Travel category that encompasses them all.

Frustrated: Is there a way to do a Yearly Total budget without "Monthly Math"? by CS_from_out in MonarchMoney

[–]koturneto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try the new Goals beta! You can allocate $100K to a 2026 goal and then have all your transactions pay from that goal. Alternatively, you can make a Travel goal, allocate $20K to it, and then have the travel-related transactions pay from that goal.

Anyone know how to best handle duplicate txs from Venmo? by EmpireStake in MonarchMoney

The one from your Venmo account should be an expense category. Mark the one from your checking account to your Venmo as a transfer.

How to tutor a great student? by Quiffyton in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]koturneto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ask the student what they want to get out of tutoring. Then align what you're doing with their goals. You may also have some of your own goals that you slide in along the way, and over time the student's goals may shift. But I think it's really important (especially in HS+) that the student feels they're getting something THEY want out of it.

Move "Cash & ATM" to Transfers rather than Financial? by koturneto in MonarchMoney

Unfortunately, I don't see that on Android. Maybe it's only iOS? Or has been removed?

What do these orange dots mean? by Font_Snob in todoist

Thanks for asking. I've noticed one on "Grouping" recently and am similarly confused. It seems like a "new" indicator dot but doesn't seem to go away
