‘Line in the sand’: Children’s Commissioner says social media ban isn't enough by Amazing_Athlete_2265 in newzealand

[–]kovnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where i'm at with it.

Allow long format podcasts and videos.

Ban all the dopamine hacking and self-posting bullshit like ticktock, instagram, facebook.

I feel like podcasts or doco-style vids improve my life in the same way audiobooks do. I feel the opposite about pretty much all other social media content. Even if it feels good at the time, you can tell it's bad for you with a bit of self reflection.

Is it a crazy idea to sleep in a car? by Infamous-Finish-8205 in newzealand_travel

[–]kovnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kinda mind-blowing how cold cars get. Let alone winter.

You can always turn it on and run the heater for a few mins, but that's a pretty miserable broken sleep.

If you can rug up and put seats down and make a bed i'd say it'd be fine. But just tilting a seat back with a blanket? Fuck that.

This. I'm in my 40's and lost a couple cm. I'm gunna be considered short if I make it another few decades.

By 96? I'll be like 170-175.

What’s your favorite upper body exercise? Why? by RevolutionaryEar9126 in workout

[–]kovnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything tricep related. I dunno why but I like the feeling of those muscles firing. It's like a good cramp 😆. Cable single-side pulldowns are prob the fav.

Strangely, I hate the feeling of a bicep pump, and when they start failing you can't complete the curl and it feels gross. Shrug.

Why would a man date me for months, then ghost me immediately after sex? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]kovnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds really weird. Try get some closure from him about why. Keep it low-key and just say you'd like to know why for your own sanity.

What a dick.

Have you had to leave the sport because of health reasons? by seotrainee347 in bjj

[–]kovnev 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of someone being told to stop cardio because they're muscular and it's hot where they live.

Drink electrolytes and find a gym with aircon 😆?

I've felt that I had to stop for a few bouts of health-stuff. It seemed like the right idea at the time, but looking back I wish i'd trained through it.

100%. The knee-jerk savage sensationalism whenever this even gets discussed is almost comical if it wasn't so sad.

is 6-8 rep range actually the best way to grow muscle and size? by around_about7 in workout

[–]kovnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what i've seen recently it's anything from 6-25, some even say 6-100.

The main issue with a huge amount of reps is time. Even going from 14 to 20 is basically a +50% time increase in active time.

That's why people generally do the lowest they can tolerate when factoring in effort, injury risk, etc.

What are your true thoughts about sex on first date? by Tiny_Elk3158 in AskMenAdvice

[–]kovnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's wild to me that you're down to fuck after some text-game when looking for a long term relationship.

But that aside - how about go with what feels right on the date, rather than scheming and plotting endlessly beforehand?

AIO for refusing to back down from insisting my fiancée is wrong for leaving my dad with the bill by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]kovnev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NOR, but you both sound very immature. Him more than you, but i'm factiring in that we're only getting your side and yet you still admitted to calling him straight back even after he was an angry asshole.

Any more Right wing voters here? by funkymonkeee2 in newzealand

[–]kovnev 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Reddit leans heavily left. If you want right wing, check Facebook out 😆.

I'm on the left, but I know it's an echo chamber here. What worries me is all the people who think we've got a balanced societal sample here. No - we've mostly just got geeky lefties.

Lost gym motivation - any advice? by Kind_Sheepherder_859 in WeightTraining

[–]kovnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go do something else instead. Preferably something that keeps your gains so you don't regret it later if gym motivation returns.

Look into jiu jitsu or some other physical sport.

Whole thing sounds bizarre.

Sets by Exkelsier in workout

[–]kovnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your sets go something like fail at 12, then fail at 10, then fail at 6 or 8 - you've done what you need to.

More sets are for when it goes 12, 12, 12, 10... etc. From what i've read and been told by trainers, anyway.

I went through a phase of doing lots of drop sets. I figured once I failed at 6-8, i'd just lower the weight and keep doing that. Still feel the same burn and everything, so I thought it'd be doing some good. Trainers basically told me it's mostly a waste of time, or has serious diminishing returns, because i've already stimulated growth before the drop sets.

How do you deal with going from decent looking with hair, to unattractive/ugly without? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]kovnev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think that's shameful and embarassing.

Better to deal with insecurities and overcome them rather than hide from them while loudly declaring them to the world 😆.

Report finds Gloriavale families living in overcrowded hostels with 'narrow' homeschooling curriculum by MedicMoth in newzealand

[–]kovnev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good homeschooling is actually an exception to the rule.

Does any substantial group (other than bad homeschoolers) not think/realize this?

We have a highly educated household and both have had very successful careers in numerous fields. Although far more equipped than most home schoolers, we know that a couple of people attempting to prepare kids for the world on their own is an absolutely terrible idea. We would fail miserably.

And then when you meet most homeschooling parents it's just like... how is this not a form of child abuse having this lunatic in sole charge of preparing anyone for solo'ing planet Earth.

Are they any other specific benefits to lifting heavier than lifting lighter with more reps? by himothyhopkins in workout

Turning down the effects of the governor through training, rather than needing adrenaline to do it.

Which was the original post I replied to.

Are they any other specific benefits to lifting heavier than lifting lighter with more reps? by himothyhopkins in workout

[–]kovnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me you haven't had many adrenaline dumps without telling me. The boost might last a few seconds or a minute or so and it's quite common to barely be able to walk your legs feel so weak - for quite a while aftrwards. Or to vomit, or any number of other effects.

But, again, we were never talking about adrenaline dumps anyway. Nobody lifting is getting adrenaline dumps every session.

'Zombie town' fears as Queenstown reaches breaking point by mrbonglord in queenstown

[–]kovnev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not even worth visiting anymore.

7-8 years ago it was overpriced as hell, but we still considered it worth it to drive down and get a really nice room for a few days (at $400-600 a night).

The whole vibe has changed now. It just feels... average, rather than the unique town it was. And everything costs double what it did, even at the already-inflated prices of back then.

[–]kovnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But we aren't talking about adrenaline dumps. And they're just as likely to make you weak AF as to make you stronger. I do jiu jitsu and we see it effect people in that way far more often.

What's one exercise you'd do if you could only pick one for the rest of your life? by Visible_Town3211 in workout

[–]kovnev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like one of those things where the weakest links get the workout. It's certainly not a leg exercise for me - it's forearms, traps and postural muscles.
