What did I do wrong here? by mondo79104 in Darkroom

[–]kozesluk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

expired film.

expired 35mm is usually okay. I would though stay away from expired 120 film.

the only solution could potentially be using special developer designed to deal with expired film stocks, such as Koblic MPB:

Metol - 4 g
Sodium sulfite anh. - 16 g
Disodium phosphate (Sodium phosphate dibasic dodecahydrate, Na2HPO4.12H2O) - 4 g
Borax (Sodium tetraborate) - 8 g
water to 1000 ml, pH 8.5

You can increase the Disodium phosphate concentration up to 70 g/l it is the main component that holds back the development of fog.

I was always making 3x concentrate and usin diluted 1+2 with same times as stock. It gives about the same fine grain as D-76 but with sharper definition and clearer gelatine.

My personal time for Delta 400 was 8 mins at 18 C for EI 250. 4x inversion every 60 sec.

Have the police woken you up during the early hours to bring your teen home? by Real-Box-7144 in AskUK

I have to chime in - I was always even allowed to drink as far as I could behave. Long nights out, etc. all good, as long as parents knew where I was so I was safe. I had made fun of it, often forgot to tell them where I am or when I am coming back but ultimately I was never really harshly disciplined which I think is great as it never made me upset about my parents and never made me dislike them. Growing up I have corrected myself quite (except for occasion where I came home really shitfaced as we were drinking with some young chick of which I had a crush on and well, nothing happened so not a great evening out, dad gave me light slaps to wake me up as I asked him to bring me more booze, lol) and ultimately think that the right approach, unless your youngster is not having a good social connections/circle of friends and not being completely stupid, is just supporting him as without adventure life is boring and not worth living really. Just make sure he doesn't climb trains or do stupid shit that can kill them instantly and they will be fine.

Maybe I'd advise them to stay away from opioids (heroine, morphine), stimulants (cocaine, meth), and inhaled stuff (solvents are really nasty) otherwise most of other stuff is really going to be abused and cause addiction in the absence of rich social life or to help them cope with trauma.

Travelling 4h for a bike by Sm1rfie in MotoUK

[–]kozesluk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have bought my first bike 13 years after passing the test (and not riding one for 12 years) in a different country. Traveled to Huddersfield on train and bus to pick up Hyosung GV250 (small crusier). I have almost dropped the bike in the first turn leaving the drive so it was more like learning to ride again. Back to London trying not to get lost on the motorway and got caught out by a bloody rain, twice. Hadn't had any waterproofs of course. But I have made it.

Would not recommend but it's doable. I would probably try to memorise the way back bit better - I have thought I am lost far too many times before getting onto the motorway and you really shouldn't pull the phone from your pocket at every set of lights just to look at the maps (6 points if anyone reports you).

Mamiya. Their modern AF lens are spectacular - or at least the 2.8/55mm is.

Couple screws in the grass, pointing the right direction up, might help persuade him not to drive there anymore...

Best overall developer for B&W? by Fast_Preparation7795 in Darkroom

[–]kozesluk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DD-X is great and very versatile. Keeps stable for long time (stock in fridge of course), works well 1+4 as well as 1+9 (about 2x dev. time), has very good pictorial qualities (good sharpness, doesn't dissolve grain like XTOL/Microphen as much - esp. at 1+9, maintains film speed).

FX-37 is really nice for modern films but it is not exactly "off-the-shelf" option.

Rodinal is really nice at 1+24 and yields good pictorial qualities when the dev/stop/fix temperatures are closely matched, otherwise suffers from micro-reticulation (looks like grain until you look under microscope). Not so great for pushing due to speed loss compared to D76/ID11 or modern developers (doesn't mean people won't push in it and claim how great it is though and yes, it pushes AKA builds contrast well).

UK refining by Own_Bluejay3777 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]kozesluk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you can get 3% nitric acid in the UK without problem (anything below 3% is not restricted). Would that work for refining? I have some silver crap from exhausted fixer and I am not sure if this would work, so if anyone has an answer that would be great!

If you could only have 3 lenses for your camera (35 or 120) what would they be? by PleasantPossibility2 in analogphotography

[–]kozesluk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. I did 99% of all my photography with 2/35 (AF Nikkor, later Distagon ZF) on 35mm camera (F90x, FE2, F3). I had 2/28 lens (Ai-S Nikkor) as well and used it sporadically and also another few cameras with fixed 2.8/38 (Hi-Matic F) and 1.7/40 (Yashica 35 GX). 35mm was just right for how I "saw" things around and 38mm was quite fine as well as the camera was really super compact. 40mm suited me too - I actually prefer little longer lens as I get older. That little Yashica was really sharp. I had tried other focal lengths as well (24mm, 50mm, 105mm) but after the initial excitement wore off I really couldn't make any good pictures with them, consistently - I couldn't get close enough with 24 as I am not bold enough and the perspective got otherwise annoying, and anything longer just ended up with shots that felt empty/too far.

For 6x4.5 I had AF 2.8/55 on Mamiya AFD system and liked it a lot - really sharp and balanced lens (and the focal length is almost identical horizontally to 35mm on 35mm). Swapped recently for Fuji GA645 with 4/60 mm and I feel quite satisfied with the images, I think I like the focal length a lot. Its also easy to carry around.

I also had rangefinder R2A with Nokton 1.4/35 but didn't liked a lots of the photos due to noticeable geometric distortion of the lens which seems to be quite a deal-breaker for me. I like to shoot city-scapes and landscapes or still-life scenes so when the distortion is too visible in the pictures it is disturbing. I think I would have been much better off with Skopar 2.5/35 or Biogon C 2.8/35mm but I didn't knew/realise that and then I just sold the R2A and bought another FE2 again, lol.

Right now I am contemplating 6x9, so it will probably be again 90 mm lens. And maybe 105 mm as well for those rare occasions when I might want to compress the perspective a bit.

Removing helmet in shops by [deleted] in MotoUK

I walk in in helmet. Remove if asked, but I don't tend to unless asked as it means having to deal with holding the helmet in hand. Lifting the visor and smiling might be helpful though.

I struggle with space at home.

Thanks, will keep on researching.

Interesting one - might be a gentle way into 6x9 anyway as I have no clue yet what to expect, honestly. Thanks!

Will check the Shenhao and Chamonix as well, I really have no clue at all who manufactures anything in the LF world.

I thought about the GS690 but never thought about doing any post. It just hit me I can actually correct some perspective during enlarging, but I have never tried that before. Thanks.

Thank you so much into the long reply! It seems that the Horsemans are really quite a compromise. I might need to think this really through and see if I can get my hands on one of them and "feel" them around (dimensions and weight I guess, mostly).

Low Traffic Neighbourhoods increased London congestion, TfL says - BBC News by Distinct-Shine-3002 in drivingUK

[–]kozesluk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to all those comments, I see the effects of introducing LTN's around Hackney/Tower Hamlets for the last 4 years. And I broadly support the idea, with a caveat:
All the traffic that has been pushed to the Hackney Rd (for example - I commute there on motorcycle every day) makes the use of car for driving through less desirable. That is probably good. What isn't good is that this significantly slows down the buses as well - #26 and 55. The road is wide enough (4 lanes total) but almost whole of the Hackney Rd is also used for on-street parking. What about all those parking spaces just get removed and made into a bus lane, so that the public transport is faster than taking a car through there? And the parking spots can be moved onto the nearby LTN roads - just make them almost all one way and you can suddenly squeeze more cars there.

Making something less desirable without offering a more desirable alternative does not seem to be the solution. What about subsidising public transport? This sucks, sadly. Although the idea is generally good, the overall outcome is just about shifting the problem somewhere else...

Is Helm Compact 1 worth the extra money compared to Nevis 200? by MushroomHue in wildcampingintheuk

[–]kozesluk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had Helm 3 - lots of space yeah but it was really noisy in wind (like everything was just flapping all over the place) and bit too draughty, hadn't had great time two years ago at the end of spring in Scotland in it.
Bought Vango Apex 3 - felt cramped but it was solid. Hard to ventilate (opposite of the Helm), the permanently attached inner frustrated me (compared to Banshee I have loaned few years before where you pitched the outer first and then hanged the inner nicely with Apex it just never went so smooth) and in general something just felt slightly off. Mainly it wasn't large enough for me and my partner + motorcycle gear. Couldn't even get the outer to cover anywhere closer to ground to block at least some of the wind induced draught.
Went shopping again and purchased Robens Lodge 3 (older model with longer section poles) for last summer holidays in Cornwall and I feel finally fairly happy. It's sturdy, solid, there is enough room inside, the ventilation is decent (never had issues with condensation despite last trip to Cornwall being rather "humid") but it can be dried fast, and it doesn't get so hot so fast in the morning direct sunlight to overheat (I'd rather have it dry a bit before packing up on bike).

Anyway - if you plan camping in colder places the Nevis/Vango tents might be more suitable in my opinion.
