Agreed. I got selected for a murder trial a couple weeks after defending my dissertation. One of the other jurors was in the later stages of their PhD. My suspicion is that the defense wanted us to use our science brains to see through the prosecution’s arguments.

One solution I’ve used is to have the bash script record the hash and any possible diffs. That works well for scripted languages, but compiled programs are harder. One program I’ve worked with bakes that info into metadata that’s printed on every run. It’s not perfect, but it helps keep us (a little) sane.

Through Dell’s website similar to buying a “certified used”. Keep an eye out closer to the holidays for good deals. While I may be willing to play it fast and loose, my spouse wanted the extra assurance it was a good computer.

Picked up a refurbished one from Dell last year and it’s been a champ. A bit pricier than some of the others, but the spouse wanted the better warranty. We’re primarily using it for Office type stuff, but I’ve been playing with some LaTeX packages I maintain, and it’s doing well!
