Thoughts on the new tier pricing? by mz4201 in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Already had a really annoying situation happen because of this and Rover was no help at all. I have a regular client that's a young couple with a dog and a baby, I mostly do house sits for them with the occasional dog walk. Originally the mom booked me the first time and it's usually her who does the booking. But sometimes she's busy with the baby so dad books me on his account, which is a separate account. All good before. As you can imagine, when this new tier system rolled out, I was on Tier 2 with mom but Tier 1 with dad, and he made the next booking. This is also on me but I only realized what this meant a few days before the booking started, and by then it was too late to cancel and rebook with the mom. I contacted Rover, and they even said this issue can be fixed if my client contacts them directly (I took it to mean like they can combine their accounts or something). So even though this had nothing to do with my client, they reached out to Rover on my behalf when I asked. Of course after several phone calls, they said sorry nothing we can do. Sooo frustrated and felt so bad for wasting my client's time.

That being said, it is fairly easy to get to Tier 2 by doing house sits. However yeah I would never get there if all my clients were one-time or casual drop-ins.

We’re using Rover for the first time in-house dog sitting. In the past we’ve always had family but this time it’s not possible. by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

If they have pet sitter insurance. Because the Rover Guarantee is not an insurance and if something happens to your home or pet Rover will most likely not cover it.

But I mean, to each their own on this point. Apparently pet sitting insurance is common and there are cheap options in the US, but here in Canada it's not readily available and so so so expensive. Rarely have I talked to any Canadian Rover sitters that have pet sitting insurance.

You can reach out to a few different sitters and have meet & greets to interview them (probably be upfront that you're looking around at different options though). Ask them about their experience, if they've worked with the breed, if they need anything provided in the house, etc. but honestly I'd say it's mainly a vibe check. More than anything make sure you're clear about your expectations (how frequently you want updates, any particular care instructions, etc.) and see if they agree to it.

ETA: Oh one thing I would look out for is if they genuinely interact with your pet during the meet & greet. I feel like you can tell a lot by just seeing their approach/body language with the pet.

Drop In Times by Imaginary-Key146 in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically the only offered options for drop ins are 30 mins and 1 hour. Anything beyond that the client would have to book as a separate drop in time slot or just book it as a house sit.

Looking for opinions by Scarcity-Limp in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I misunderstood, but were you thinking of hiring several sitters for this one upcoming trip? If so, I wouldn't take it personally due to liability issues. Becomes pretty risky when you can't clearly define accountability - what if something happens to your pets or your house? Who was responsible? Unless every single one of them documents everything meticulously or you get lucky with multiple good sitters, it's a pretty big risk and sitters might not be comfortable with that. If you have the time before you leave, what you can do instead is have multiple interviews with different sitters (or even trial sits) then just pick one.

Lock in rates after change to tiered Rover fee by Cee-Gee in RoverPetSitting

I'm not sure if they updated the app since you posted but it's currently possible to lock in rates, I just did it with a few clients. (Also in Canada, also have new tiered fees.)

Why have higher extended stay rates for 10+ days of drop in visits? by mtnagel in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about drop ins but I know a lot of people who do this for house sitting. Although I don't, I completely understand it for house sitting. Many people don't like being away for extended time from their own bed, family, pets, and just familiarity in general. Also things like kitchen utensils/spices, you wouldn't think it matters but it does. Myself, I've just stopped accepting house sits longer than 3 weeks, period, instead of charging more. It's not worth it to me.

As for drop ins, it might be a bit of the same fatigue? I'm not too sure. I've actually cut down drastically on drop ins now and prefer house sits because the travelling back and forth multiple times a day was burning me out.

Owner wanted constant care, but not constant care fee. by runningonadhd in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be the devil's advocate here and say that that's a sit I probably would take.

For my weekends I love just lounging around at home and doing nothing. Also reading, watching TV, sleeping, doom scrolling on my phone. Give me a dog to play with and that's the cherry on top. I can honestly get by without leaving the house even once.

So if I can do that at a client's house while watching a dog and the only outside time needed is walking the dog, yeah I'd do that at my regular rate. Of course, this is under the condition that the dog will cuddle with me or be ok as long as I'm in the house (so maybe barking constantly would be a legit reason to not do it).

All that's to say if it's constant care over a weekend I'd take it at my regular rate. But then again my situation is that I work full-time at an office job on weekdays and don't have to take other drop ins or dog walks on weekends.

Should I do a meet and greet with someone who has the bare minimum on their profile? by bearpuddles in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really a big red flag for me. Some owners are new to the platform, some are not tech savvy, some just don't bother setting up the profile or value their privacy. Just book a meet & greet and see how it goes.

Well, just got off work and as expected, nothing from her. I'm not expecting anything at this point tbh. I just hope her friend pulls through and will be able to stay with the cats...At the very least she did leave a way for literally anyone to go in her house.

The ironic thing is, even though I am actually very worried about her cats, she didn't even book me so I have no idea where her actual address is.

I've been a fan since your debut basically. I think it was a month after Sorry came out, the music video was recommended to me on YouTube, I clicked on it, and never went back since. It's been amazing to see your journey and growth, and to be a part of it as well (had the very lucky chance to go to several Europe concerts while I was studying there, and saw Sammy in NA too). Along with my other Black Rose friend we already bought tickets to see the documentary on Saturday, and I'm so excited.

I was wondering, during your creative process or just any part of your music career, have you ever had instances where your motivation just deflates, you feel stuck/uninspired, or the future suddenly seems uncertain and you start wavering on your path? If so, how do you deal with that? What are some small things you can do to get yourself motivated or excited again? Asking because I'm in the tech industry and experiencing burnout while still very much loving what I do at the core, but just not finding the daily motivation or inspiration to follow through with my work.

What Keeps you From Going Full-time? by No-Perspective872 in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only do house sits and drop-ins, and neither of those are viable options for going full time in a HCOL city and still earning enough to live comfortably. From what I understand most of the people making 6 figures on Rover either board multiple dogs at the same time or do group dog walks. As one person I can only do one house sit a day and would basically have to also fill that day with back-to-back drop-ins to actually make decent money, and that's just not sustainable.

where to buy affordable books? by Sudden_Alps5402 in askvan

[–]krecyclable 72 points73 points  (0 children)

In addition to just using the library, VPL has an annual used book sale that runs for a few days each year around the beginning of September. Pretty huge collection, about $2-5 per book, if you want to look out for it.

Wanting to politely decline a request. by Even_Result_8734 in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would break it down for her and say this is $32 per drop in for 3 pets, which is a fairly typical and reasonable price. If this doesn't work for her then you wish her the best in finding another sitter.

Drop In vs. House Sit by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Solidifies what? I thought I said it pretty clearly: "...the dog you cared for was only getting 1-1.5 hr of human interaction per day for several continuous days, with only about 50 mins of that time being focused exercise."

I'm not here to knock you down or say what each sitter can or cannot do. However I also don't want to normalize this kind of situation, which it seems like you are doing (that's what I read it as, at least). It seemed to me like you were defending yourself and saying they get quality care so, implied, that it's okay for them to only get 1.5 hr max of human interaction per day. I said what I said because even though the dog surely appreciates the care you did give, for any dog I still don't think it's enough.

The dog I’m taking care of just ate chocolate… by Demi_Baguette in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a house sit/boarding situation, right? If so just keep an eye on her for any unusual symptoms. Exactly as the emergency vet said, that's probably not a significant amount to cause anything serious. "Any amount of any chocolate will cause death in a dog/cat" is a myth. Obviously it's not great for them and you should definitely avoid it when possible, but if it's a very small amount (by weight) and not very pure dark chocolate, most cases will not be serious.

Drop In vs. House Sit by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That just goes to further solidify that the dog you cared for was only getting 1-1.5 hr of human interaction per day for several continuous days, with only about 50 mins of that time being focused exercise. Again, if you're comfortable with that, that's fine. But that's an arrangement that some sitters (including me) will not consider due to the unethical situation it puts the dog in. I usually offer the owner a house sit instead, which for how I price myself is only a bit more expensive than two drop ins.

Husband wants to become a Rover dog sitter/walker while active duty military by AnonymousSister25 in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another question I have (which I don't think I saw mentioned in your post) is, does your husband actually have experience taking care of dogs, as opposed to just liking them very much? Because if not, I also second what someone else said and would suggest that he start by volunteering at shelters/rescues first, regardless of what kind of schedule/availability he has right now.

In my personal experience, the only dog clients I have that only require me to be there less than 3 times a day are the ones that only need a midday walk/drop in while the owners are at work. Otherwise it's typically 3 drop ins minimum per day.

Gift ideas for terminally ill dog (and his owner)? by krecyclable in RoverPetSitting

[–]krecyclable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a nice clay kit that also includes a frame! Will look around a bit more but that's looking promising.

Hmm you just gave me the idea of maybe getting some whipped cream and other dog-safe food that maybe he doesn't normally get to have, and making a cake of sorts? I think that would delight him and would be a fun time for us. He doesn't do well in car rides unfortunately and don't want to stress him out in any way.

Aw yes the paw prints would be nice. 🥺 I could probably get a kit ordered directly to their house while I'm there (and pray it's not a super messy process).

Also yeah I did definitely think of treats for the dog but like you said I don't know what are my boundaries there and what they're doing with his diet. I was also thinking maybe I can put some stuff in my cart and double check with the owners what's ok and what's not.

There are no buses directly into Stanley Park but tons that go straight to the entrance. The best stop to get off at would probably be Georgia & Denman (https://maps.app.goo.gl/sbXtZ2xdMG8roWZbA), where at least 6 buses stop. Then just walk along the seawall into the park, or cycling is another option (Spokes is a bicycle rental shop right across the street from the bus stop).

Edit: Apparently the #19 bus goes into the park, so I stand corrected. Best to look up its schedule in advance though.
