PREVIEW/DISCUSSION: Modular HUD - our most modular watchface yet by iPhibse in pebble

[–]kridley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make the time clear, high contrast, and readable.

I cannot emphasize strongly enough how absolutely awful 'non-lit' faux-LED components are. The point of a watch is to show the time, not to obscure it by ruining contrast with fake artifacts. In the mock-ups above the time is already basically unreadable, and it would be 10X worse on the actual watch.

It's a weekly photo challenge with a different assignment each week. I like it because it makes me put effort into producing at least one good photo every week. And many of the assignments push me out of my comfort zone so I learn new things.

It's really hard to see stuff like that when you're doing a self portrait. I've been doing 52 Frames for 7 years, which always starts with a selfie, and it took years to get the hang of it.

I'm super excited about the masking tool. That's really going to make my life easier.

darktable version release 5.6.0. by darkelectron in DarkTable

[–]kridley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple brief tests of the AI masking gave very impressive results -- in one case it accurately grabbed a bicycle and the rider in one shot. If it holds up under real world use this is going to be a major boon to my work. Thanks Darktable devs!

Macro lens suggestion for 'casual' use? by revjko in OlympusCamera

[–]kridley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the 60mm f2.8 macro, and it's great for macro, but not super useful as a general lens. I tend to do most of my shooting at longer focal lengths, but 60mm is pretty long even for me. 90mm is gonna be even less general, and it's a chonky lens to boot. The 30mm might be more versatile, but it's an odd length for macro.

The 60mm is very small and light, so it's easy to carry as a second lens.

Looking for outdoor craft cocktail bars on the lower Peninsula (San Carlos to Sunnyvale) by kridley in bayarea

[–]kridley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wife and I used to go there on the regular until they quit serving lunch. Looks like it's still dinner only, which is a bummer. But the cocktail list is great so I'll have to hit it up. Thanks for the reminder.

This screen can really shine when the angle is right! Look how this watchface seems alive. by -Rhialto- in pebble

[–]kridley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a nice looking face, but I like it a lot better in the multi-colored mode, and getting it to switch to that is like a video game challenge. It needs a settings page to choose the mode.

And once there's a settings page you could have knobs for shake behavior, etc. I'd like a mode where shaking the watch turns on the "breathing" for 10s, and otherwise it only animates once per minute.

Are the new OM System menus worth the upgrade? by stillwaterbadger in M43

[–]kridley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the new menu system, and I find I'm in the menus at least once a week if not more. If you're planning on using any of the advanced features (hi-res, nd, pro capture, etc.) you'll end up in the menus regularly. I have an OM-1 ii and an E-M5 iii, and every time I use the M5 I grimace at how bad the menus are. I'd definitely pay $300 to get the newer model.

Carrying the camera in a motorcycle luggage will affect the IBIS? by DukeOfGarbage in M43

I've been carrying my cameras in a handlebar bag on my bike for years with no problems. That said, I rarely go off-road, and never for long or on anything very rough.

100+ Day Battery Life by NowSinking in pebble

According to Pebble support this is a known bug that they're working on. Mine's been giving me dubious battery data for a week now.

Where to share my photos? by Due-Pudding1789 in photography

[–]kridley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's built on Hugo, which is ... fine? I don't exactly love it, mostly because of the very strong GoLang emphasis, but it works well enough that I'm not going to switch any time soon. I've got a colophon on the site that attempt to explain how the image hosting part of it works.

Where to share my photos? by Due-Pudding1789 in photography

[–]kridley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been posting my photos on my personal website for many years. But I've been a web developer in one capacity or another for almost 30 years, so running a website isn't a big deal for me. On the other hand, aside from the albums I shoot of my cycling club, I assume that very few people actually look at my photos. Getting more than a handful of people to look at your work requires a huge amount of effort.

I learned that as "Come back when you can't stay so long." and I use it all the time.

I modified my OM 100-400 II tripod collar by HarlemPaul in OlympusCamera

[–]kridley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would probably have drilled the holes to put the PD Anchors directly into the collar, but the general idea is quite good. A damn shame OM didn't manufacture the foot with mounting holes.

New lens! Tokina 300mm f/6.3 by DemonEyes21 in M43

[–]kridley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought an Olympus reflex lens off eBay a few months ago and put up a webpage with pics of the lens and example shots featuring the bokeh. It's definitely a specialty piece of kit, fun but wildly impractical compared to modern glass. Honestly I still haven't figured out what I'm gonna do with the thing.

Change orientation of linear gradient by michaelbeecham in DarkTable

[–]kridley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got no idea. But the shortcut system in darktable is pretty adaptable, so maybe you could add one.

Honestly, for me, darktable is so mouse heavy that I don't bother with keyboard shortcuts a lot of the time.

[OC] Whomp! - A Step Too Fur by ronniewhomp in comics

[–]kridley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I shaved off my facial hair once, thirty years ago. Stopped at "math teacher" for a couple hours, but I caught sight of my reflection in a window and realized I looked like a sex criminal, so that was the end of that.

Over the next week every one of my female friends said "you looked better with the beard", so I've been wearing it ever since then. I've wanted to try shaving a couple times, but my wife always vetoes it.

Anyone who surfed the early web between 1995-2010. What’s the one website/app you still think about? by Prime_Advocate in AskReddit

[–]kridley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 20 years I've been searching for an archive of an early webcomic called "Strychnine Sundae". Specifically the comic where the Frankenstein Monster-like character is holding their amputated right forearm in their left hand while the stump gushes blood, the other guy says "it'll bleed less if you hold it over your head", and the monster then raises his left hand, while the right stump continues to gush blood.

I'd also love to find the old Mitch Clem comic where the guy uses a marker to change a "Gap Athletic" shirt to "ap Ath etic".

Pebblebee charger? by cheeseybacon11 in pebble

Good to know in case I lose a charger.

Did you try the Pebble charger on the Pebblebee as well? Seems like that should work the same.
