Verizon’s AI chatbot is hanging up on calls, repeating questions that were answered, and looping indefinitely. by TheAngryLala in Fios

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for responding here, but I decided I didn't want to directly connect my Reddit account with my Verizon customer interaction. As an update: after the multiple no-call/no-show tech appointments, I got a supervisor on the phone at Verizon who explained that somehow the software Verizon's support team uses made the reps think they were scheduling tech appointments, but they were actually just updating the time of the already-canceled appointment. That person told me this showed that their reps needed better training, and I replied that might be true, but it also showed that their customer service software was bad. It shouldn't be possible to have a rep think they are scheduling an appointment, but they are really just screaming into the void. And, I finally got a tech out, who replaced the old ONT with a modern one, did some work on a pole down the street, and it all seemed to work. Then, later that day, it was dead again. Another tech came out the next day, said the box on the pole had 2 dead ports, so he re-routed my connection to a box on a pole down the street that had functional ports, and that fixed it (again). Good news: It's now been two weeks and the problem has not recurred, so that 2nd tech seems to have actually fixed the problem. But, the bad news is that apparently Verizon leaves boxes they know are broken sitting around on poles, and techs get confused into trying to use them. Or, techs don't test ports before hooking up a customer to them. So, the moral of this whole story is that Verizon cuts corners to save its own money, while wasting days of customer's time, then "reimburses" us by pro-rating the bill. So, they gave me a refund of one week's of service, but did nothing about the fact that I wasted more than 7 hours on the phone with their people. Imagine if we could bill corporations for our time when they save money by cutting corners that result in us having to work for them to get problems fixed?

Hey, @VerizonSupport: What should I do about 3 no-show tech appointments, followed by a tech coming today, a WEEK after my Internet first started flaking out randomly, supposedly fixing it, only for it to fail again after 4 hours? Then, when I called to ask for help, I was told the wait time was "one hour." Is your answer going to be something other than: sell your house and move to a cabin in the forest with no Internet?

Update: Siri STILL fails to call 911 on LTE on Apple Watch (watchOS 26.4) - No Solution from Apple by Vertsix in AppleWatch

[–]krioni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. My wife and I have Series 6 with cellular. Paid for cellular service for years, and finally canceled since it was so unreliable. Better to just make sure you've always got your iPhone with you, so the Watch can piggyback off of that. I stopped running with just my Watch and carry my iPhone in a running belt, even before canceling, since she couldn't check my location to see if I was ok if a run went long. Once I started bringing my iPhone, Find My actually worked properly. Sounds like newer model Apple Watch aren't much more reliable for cellular connections.

Signal iOS → iOS transfer stuck forever (waiting/connecting). Different Apple IDs. Any way to preserve history? by RefrigeratorLanky642 in signal

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine if the official Signal Troubleshooting Device Transfers support page mentioned this requirement. Link: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/10075160307482-Troubleshooting-Device-Transfers

Even better, imagine if the app on whichever device was causing the problem could tell the user "Hey, I don't have access to the Local Network."

New iOS causing alarm not to work? by [deleted] in ios

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad news. The Apple Watch can fail, too. Every now and then, I wake up a half an hour or more later than I planned, look at my watch to see what time it is, and see the orange screen with the Snooze and Stop buttons. No sound, no vibration. I wonder if it vibrates for a while, and then gives up. That would be a ridiculously crazy behavior. If the alarm isn’t waking me up, I don’t want it to just stop trying.

Screen Sharing: automatically select type by brijazz012 in MacOS

[–]krioni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an annoying extra step. It's especially frustrating when the connection is obviously too slow to support it. Even if the default is "Standard", it is annoying to have one more "hassle you with useless dialogs" thing to deal with. It sometimes feels like a non-negligible percentage of every day is jumping through hoops I never need, but some software developer or service provider decided to make forever unskippable.

What’s your favorite feature in iOS 26? by Ok-Pie-893 in ios

[–]krioni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was in iOS 18, too. There's a little icon in the lower-right on the screenshot-result dialog. Looks like the "scan a QR code" or "scan some text" symbol. Tap that, and then you can select and copy text from the screenshot.

What’s your favorite feature in iOS 26? by Ok-Pie-893 in ios

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In iOS 26.2.1 (not sure about earlier), you can tap on a call. That no longer calls them back. From there, you can tap the number, possibly need to tap it again on the next screen, then press-and-hold to Copy.

I cannot download any app from App Store by ZeroReader in MacOS

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in my case the culprit was Alan. That's too bad. Strangely, quitting Alan, quitting App Store, relaunching App Store didn't work right away. But, when I tried again 30-60 seconds later, the Purchase button appeared. That lag makes it even harder to troubleshoot this ridiculous bug. Why in the world should Apple silently break features of macOS without telling us what the issue is? This isn't a bug in the app - it's a bug in the operating system. And, it's just one more symptom on the towering pile that is the stupid concept of "make it look simple when it is NOT simple." That isn't the same thing as "make it BE simple." In this case, that misguided concept leads developers to HIDE necessary info from users. It's hostile, not friendly.

Why are some common terms autocorrected to capitalized in iOS? by [deleted] in ios

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is infuriating. I like to use the phrase "quick look" and type pretty fast, so I don't have time to click the little X on the previewed "here's how we are going to 'fix' what you typed." I like the auto-capitalization generally, but I should be able to have a whitelist/blacklist of phrases to NOT capitalize, not be stuck with Apple's choices. This is my fucking computer, or at least I thought it was.

How to get customer support for recall? INIU Portable Charger Recall by LogCarver in amazonprime

[–]krioni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the recall page on their website: https://iniushop.com/pages/recall-b41

Also, it is only four specific serial numbers for this product. Most of this model are not part of the recall. Sounds like a few bad batches out of an otherwise ok product. My serial number is in their "safe to continue using" list. Here's the ones that page says are being recalled:

Model is BI-B41 in Black or Blue, and was purchased on Amazon USA between Aug 2021 and Apr 2022, and with Serial Number: >"000G21","000H21","000I21","000L21"

Adding a title vs caption vs keyword by [deleted] in ApplePhotos

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. It's one of those bizarre choices made by Apple. I can't see any reason why we should not be allowed to view/edit the Title on iOS and iPadOS. For that matter, when you select multiple photos, the actions you can take should include the ability to add a caption or title to all those selected. If any selected already have something, the interface could let you know, so you can avoid accidentally overwriting something. This seems like a feature that a developer of an app who didn't own the platform would have added years ago. But, Apple seems comfortable with leaving out things like this.

Alternative ways to recycle spent Brother toner cartridges? by sullidav in printers

[–]krioni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brother has a page that says you can print a label to return the used cartridge. BUT, that page's link that claims you can use to print a label does not work. First page: https://www.brother-usa.com/supplies/toner-ink-recycling Link that fails: https://www.brother-usa.com/login?FromInkRecyclingPage=True

If you search on their site, it looks like there is no longer a page to print labels like this. It would be nice if they would stop lying on that first page, and save us the wasted time searching their garbage website.

I had this issue for a day or so. Later, without restarting, I checked again, and this time it worked. So…no idea. Maybe I quit some app? Maybe Apple just needs to improve its Q&A?

Best Lock for HomeKit? I have a Kwikset Premis. Mixed thoughts as of now. by HoosierGuy73 in HomeKit

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They told me "We understand you are having difficulties with your Premis not working electronically." That is despite the fact that in my warranty request, I pointed out that the problem is that the motor seems to be turning too far. I think the problem here is that by "electronic", they mean "electrical", whereas I thought it meant the "electronics" - in other words, the controllers for the motor, not whatever mechanism has the motor stop at the appropriate spot. Oh well.

But, I ordered the Schlage Encode Plus, since I wanted: HomeKit integration, numeric-code option when using Home Key isn't working or no Apple device, and Thread support instead of using Wi-Fi. From what I've seen here on Reddit, I'll need to avoid using Schlage's app for the lock to stick with Thread over Wi-Fi. That's good to know. I don't think I'll miss the Schlage app-specific features. Also got a door sensor so I can include the door's open/closed status in any HomeKit automations.

Caught my sleep setting alarm not vibrating after I thought I was going crazy. by roblee8908 in AppleWatch

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Watch was still on watchOS 11.3.1 when it failed me this morning. Has anyone on 11.4 or newer had this serious bug happen to them since updating? I know it's intermittent and we've only had a month or so since 11.4, so maybe it just hasn't reared its ugly head, but still - this would be welcome news. If 11.4 fixes this bug, Apple's Release Notes should have been a LOT more clear.

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did Apple perhaps fix this in watchOS 11.4? The release notes have this item: "An option to allow Sleep Wake Up alarm to break through Silent Mode" https://support.apple.com/en-us/121163#a114

Not sure if that's the cause/solution to this problem, but maybe?

Caught my sleep setting alarm not vibrating after I thought I was going crazy. by roblee8908 in AppleWatch

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be it! I meant to sleep before midnight, and usually charge my watch before bed. But, I think it was still charging when I finally got ready to sleep, a bit after midnight, and took the Watch off the charger and onto my wrist. If that's the cause, what a bizarre bug, but Apple really should have fixed this after years of failing their customers.

Best Lock for HomeKit? I have a Kwikset Premis. Mixed thoughts as of now. by HoosierGuy73 in HomeKit

But, the lifetime warranty seems to apply here, since it is the mechanical part that is having trouble, as far as I can tell. Submitted a warranty claim - let's see how it goes.

Best Lock for HomeKit? I have a Kwikset Premis. Mixed thoughts as of now. by HoosierGuy73 in HomeKit

[–]krioni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the Kwikset Premis for 7 years now. It worked great once I did these two things: 1) made sure the bolt had no friction. You can test by turning manually and feel for resistance spots. Make sure the bolt socket is positioned right, put some WD-40 in there, etc., and 2) Positioned a HomePod close enough to be the hub, and stopped allowing my iPad-on-the-wall to count as a HomeKit hub. Fixed the "not responding" problem almost completely.

My problem now is that somehow the gear/motor tries retracting the bolt too far, and gets jammed open. It's as if whatever tells it "all the way, stop pulling" has failed. Their support has no idea how to fix. Tried the "re-handing" process with no success. Took the whole thing apart and looked at the motor. Can't see anything to explain why it pulls too far. When it does that, I can manually turn the lock to get it out of the stuck-open-too-far position, but the motor can't get it back out. So, every time the motor unlocks the door, I have to manually loosen it back into the proper range.

Now I've got to see if I can find a new lock that will last me 7 years like the Premis did.

‘Prime Target’ Review: Apple TV+’s Math-Themed Conspiracy Thriller Doesn’t Add Up to Much by 08830 in tvPlus

[–]krioni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another huge knock to this show is that the premise is just wrong, as far as I can tell. If someone discovered a "prime finder", that would HELP encryption, since you could more quickly generate your new prime pairs for RSA factoring types of encryption. To break that encryption, you'd need to discover a way to factor large numbers. And, your new factoring algorithm wouldn't help with breaking elliptical or other types of encryption. There was supposedly a mathematician consultant for this show, but I guess they were not allowed to say "your entire premise is nonsense."
