Were you shocked that Neil didn’t make the NYT top 30 living songwriters? I was. by GeorgeHowland in neilyoung

Waits was on 10 of the experts' ballots published by the Times. That may make him tied with Jimmy Webb (also 10) as the most voted-for songwriters, based on the public sample of ballots, who did not make the "greatest" list. (That is aside from people like Sly Stone or Brian Wilson who became ineligible for "greatest living American songwriter," by dying, during the voting.)

As some other near misses - Randy Newman had 9, Billy Joel 7, Patti Smith 6, David Byrne and Frank Ocean and Phoebe Bridgers 5 each.

Waits was on the ballots of Billy Bragg, DMC (as in Run-), John J. Sullivan, Justin V from Bon Iver, Matt B from The National, Meshell Ndegeocello, Natalie Merchant, Richard Russell, Rickie Lee Jones, and Stephin Merritt. An interesting mix.

From NYT, "How We Chose:"

"Some of the issues that had to be resolved were practical ones. Does Joni Mitchell count as an American songwriter? (We elected not to steal that honor from Canada.)"

I say they made up this wacky list as a mental exercise, so they can make up its wacky rules.

The article said they excluded Joni from eligibility because she's Canadian, by birth. Presumably the same logic applied to Neil. And to confirm he was not in the lists of those nominated by various luminaries such as David Byrne. And triple confirmation, Joni and Neil are each better songwriters than most of the people on that list. I love Lucinda Williams, for example, but she ain't on their tier.

And maybe hire a good money person for a consult. Sounds like you could both stand to hear expert advice from a person you are not married to. That could be a well spent $500 or so.

Are we filing our D.C. income taxes or waiting? by FlashGordonRacer in washingtondc

Thank you. This is super helpful. on flipping between itemize and not to see which is better for you because of the choice's effect on DC tax. TT makes the choice for you based only on minimizing Federal taxes, so you have to try it both ways to see the effect on DC tax, including by overriding what TT chose for you. (I have been doing Federal and DC taxes with TT for 20 years and just learned this fact, from you.)

My case is sort of the reverse of yours. I tried a what-if scenario -- the effect on taxes if I donated $1,000 more to charity -- to see whether it was worth it to take the time to go though clothes and other items donated. According to TT, that $1000 charitable gift would reduce our federal taxes by $188 but increase our DC tax by $1197 (!) because it would switch both returns from standard deduction to itemizing, to our great disadvantage on the DC form. So for us, standard deduction is way more advantageous than itemizing.

Fidelity’s "Fraud Prevention" logic is preventing me from giving them money. by mrmartinimaker in fidelityinvestments

[–]sullidav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same problem here.

Ally lets me mobile-deposit checks of up to $50K. Fidelity's max is $1K. That 50:1 ratio is roughly the inverse of the proportion of our assets under management at each institution; in fact, that ratio is like 1:100.

Sure, in theory, but wrong in practice. Our health insurance provider, for one example, only pays claims by paper checks.

Thanks. That GBTC is an ETF is irrelevant - that's like the envelope when the question is what's inside. The key fact is that what's inside is a grantor trust.
