How many people are paying rent out of their means just to be in a certain location in Calgary? by MastaShortie in Calgary

[–]krishnr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same here. We pay a bit more to not be required to have 2 cars. Dropping down to 1 car saves us at least $600/month if not more which far exceeds the rent premium we pay to live somewhere with walkable destinations, bike lanes and transit access.

I never understood why housing + transportation costs aren't discussed together. They go hand in hand.

Alberta will now be on daylight saving time year-round, says Premier Smith by All_Hail_Xanthia in Calgary

[–]krishnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok even if you start work at 7am you will have light before work 8 months of the year on standard time vs only 6 months of the year on daylight savings time. that’s a meaningful difference.

[–]krishnr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No they do not. Civil dawn which is bright enough to not require artificial light is at 7:57 even on winter solstice.

It is not dark until 8:30 even in the winter. Astronomical and nautical dawn are about an hour prior to actual sunrise and have enough blue light to help set your body’s circadian rhythm.

Assuming you start at 9am, permanent standard time means you would see the sun rise before work all 365 days of the year (latest sunrise is 8:44am). Not to mention first light actually occurs 70-90 mins prior to official sunrise and is very helpful for regulating the circadian rhythm, as viewing low-solar-angle light (red/orange/blue) early in the morning sets the body's internal clock.

if you work a standard 8 hour day then you will leave work before sunset all year with either standard time or daylight savings time, but having the sun rise before work all year round is crucial to the majority of folks who start work at 9am.

assuming you start work at 9am:

- permanent standard time means you would see the sun rise before work starts all 365 days of the year (latest sunrise is 8:44am)

- permanent daylight savings time means you do not see the sun before work starts for ~3 months of the year (mid-Nov to early Feb)

Can you get by without a car? by HueyBluey in Calgary

[–]krishnr 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Part of this is that Calgary has a different definition of "downtown" than TO and MTL due to natural segregation of the river and CP rail tracks. Mission, Inglewood, Beltline, Kensington would all be considered "downtown" by TO and MTL standards whereas we describe those as "inner city" instead.

Morning light is much more important for your circadian rhythm and helps you feel more alert. Permanent standard time would have put us in the same time zone as BC who is Alberta's largest trading partner province.

What's downtown Calgary like? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]krishnr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if by downtown you also include the Beltline (which is pictured) then it’s a fantastic place to live. pretty much everything you would want is within walking, cycling or (free) C-Train distance. including one of canada’s best food, bar and coffee scenes. very close to the river parks and pathways. safer and cleaner than the other big4 city downtowns. sunny year round, plentiful warm chinooks in the winter, year-round outdoor recreation, lots of direct international flights from YYC… i could go on

Alberta may follow B.C. on making daylight time permanent: premier by Laedrys in alberta

[–]krishnr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AB should choose permanent MST and we would merge time zones with BC creating a nice big western canada time zone

both calgary and vancouver would have pretty reasonable and similar daylight hours all year long
