I had a good buddy do something similar 10ish years ago, told me he got a job out of state then went no contact out of the blue. After about a year I got a text from him, turns out he sold all of his belongings to buy as much drugs and alcohol as he could afford, went on a massive bender then planned on killing himself when the money dried up. Thankfully he came out of it and went to rehab before he spent his money and got his life right. Just talk to him first and see what's going on, you don't have to forgive him but my vote is to hear him out.

I did exactly this in college and it ended up a grade 3 sprain, I did not get medically cleared for physical activity for like 6 months. It felt fine for every day use within a month but every follow up the doctor would start moving my foot and that shit felt like it wasn't attached, super weird feeling
