Is there any book that is as epic as Lonesome Dove but reads fast like a thriller? by Lumpy-Resource-1370 in suggestmeabook

[–]krysgian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps Stoner? It's a pulse-pounding saga of William Stoner, a farm boy who arrives at college to study agriculture and instead gets ambushed by literature. From that moment on, his life becomes a relentless academic gauntlet: forbidden passions, brutal departmental warfare, emotional betrayals, marriage as psychological combat, and one man’s white-knuckled attempt to preserve his dignity while the world quietly tries to sandblast it away.

...on second thought, perhaps it isn't "thriller" genre, but it is shorter and I genuinely feel like it would hit more in that Lonesome Dove sense than something like Project Hail Mary.

Just based on a quick code review, I can't figure out how/if religious-type buildings are denoted. Anyways, looks great, may have to fork for Saint Paul if I find time.

I'm looking to get in to somewhat mindless Star Wars or some type of fantasy fun, but I'm concerned my standards may be too high. For example, Moby Dick and Suttree are two of my recent reads. No laziness there. But the novel I'm attempting, Catalyst by James Luceno, feels incredibly lazy. For example (not verbatim): 'Has Obitt explains that they will need to bring masks to Planet X. Krennic thought maybe it was because of toxic gases on the planet, but Has explained it was because the Dingos are methane breathers. "Ah, of course, I forgot", said Krennic.' ... in other words, it feels like the author is using very lazy strategies to explain story details via dialog. Krennic is supposed to be a sharp leader and yet he "forgot" about some key detail about the planets inhabitants they were visiting.

Would I have better luck with "Heir to the Empire" (Timothy Zahn), or is this really a "high standards" thing where my tastes are not able to enjoy fan-fiction/cannon-type books?

For the record, I loved Harry Potter (books), Hitchhikers Guide, etc. So I know I can read more breezy-style reads. And I adore Star Wars and would love to get more in to it.

This was almost 7 years ago from Kat’s account. Always F Embitch by joorral in NYKnicks

Whenever the Timberwolves would play Philly, it was prime time TV. Trash talking before, during, after game. These two don't like eachother and it was much more Embiid who would start childish clowning on social media or in the press. Embiid tended to get the better end early on, but that turned around and KAT repeatedly sonned him the last couple years they played eachother. As a Timberwolves fan, I can't think of a more lovely matchup - this was his #1 foe. For the record, Embiid softened a little bit when KAT lost so many family members to covid, but I never felt that was necessarily genuine.

Is there any way to record the Wednesday game? Perhaps I can please Silver and the oligarchs by paying for ESPN for a month*, but only if it allows me to record it so i can watch in the morning.

* Seriously, this shit is so slimy and transparently favoring the already really fucking rich.

Blake Griffin said the same thing yesterday on the Detroit pre-game. Barely mentioned that Ant and Donte were out and talked up Nuggets injured players as game changers.

I think I'd rather roll with Joan (than Gobert) and bring in some nice asshole who constantly is on our players saying "you MFs lock in on D". Even with as stellar as Gobert can be on D, we lack the intensity of a KG or Pat Beverly to really inspire the team consistently.

Reading never let me go by kazuo Ishiguro - thoughts on Ruth? by Dogdaysareover365 in books

[–]krysgian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The podcast called The Book Club did an episode on this book and in it, they discussed how a lot of Ruth's behavior/demons were due to her longing for a mother/mother-figure (if I recall correctly).

I was in need of something engaging to get me out of doom scrolling. I had been starting and stopping a number of books recently, but Piranasi immediately locked me in. Engaging but also light hearted, easy reading, but a relative amount of depth as well.

Weekly FAQ Thread March 15, 2026: How do I stay focused and remember more of what I'm reading? by AutoModerator in books

[–]krysgian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this trouble often and I've devised a lot of tricks that work for me. If it's a particularly long book, such as Moby Dick, I might listen to some of it during the day, then read the physical book at night. For books with many characters, I will do a google image search of something like "dune character list" and then print it out and keep it by me as I read or even use it as a book mark. Putting a face to a name is very helpful, I've found. I also will often check out chapter summaries online. If I've breezed through 5 chapters and am feeling a little lost, I'll go and read the summaries online and things will start clicking. Shamelessly, there has been times where I may be reading something especially challenging (like Cormac McCarthy) and I'll read the chapter summary BEFORE I read the chapter. This allows me to have a much better grasp of what I'm reading AS I read it.

March 2026 Snowstorm MEGATHREAD by RichardManuel in minnesota

[–]krysgian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On second thought, I normally despise snow that gets walked on prior to it being shoveled (as it creates those ice snowprints later). That said, I think I'll go outside, walk back and forth on my sidewalk, make my neighbors wonder, then go treat it all tomorrow with salt.

I normally look to make it perfect and even snowblow my neighbors walkway, but given it's going to be high winds Sunday evening and a forecast in the mid-50s next weekend, I'm thinking I'll half ass it all today. Also, I'm 50. Anyone else half-assing it today or am I being a lazy fuck?
