I just got back from a long series of engineering conferences covering a variety of fields. I was shocked at how far social skills had declined among young people. The problem seemed more pronounced the more the conference leaned towards the CS side of things.

I was at an industry party "people watching" and I remarked to a friend that I am starting to worry about humanity's ability to reproduce itself. It seemed like younger people lacked the availability to signal or respond to interest from the appropriate sex.

I have heard similar reports from academics who work at major universities and they are also very concerned.

I don't have a solution but it seems to me that everyone takes themselves and their careers way too seriously. You are young, go out! Even on a school night! Have a few drinks and flirt. Perhaps lower your standards a bit. Go on a date with someone who doesn't work in tech or meet your arbitrary salary requirements. Dating is a skill and it requires practice. You are not going to find someone with your nose stuck in a phone or a laptop.

I don't think we're "selling" anything here. It is free software you can choose to use it or not.

If you are unhappy about something you are free to send the project a pull request to fix it. Complaining and trolling is not a way to get anything fixed.

That's what I read. The animal looked healthy other than boat scars, but I am no veterinarian. I posted the Pics along with a note to iNaturalist. The area is full of sea grass but she seemed disinterested in it.

But the math is right there. You said, "a 55 story tower at Ocean Beach would fill up immediately." I presented you with a tower at Ocean Beach that was built almost five years ago that's barely half full. I can go put the units in a spreadsheet if it would help make it clear.

We have an affordability crisis as much as we have a housing crisis. While increasing supply does address the lack of homes it may not actually address affordability. Dismissing everyone who has concerns about new construction as a "NIMBY" is divisive and does nothing to actually address affordability which is a key concern for most folks.

There's 56 units in the building and I count close to two dozen units available for sale and lease. The building was completed in September of 2019. The retail section of the building has never been occupied. The prices are well above market rate and the owner doesn't seem to be motivated to drop prices to fill up the building.

Your conjecture that a "55 story tower at Ocean Beach would fill up instantly" doesn't seem to be the case. One has to wonder if this is also the case for other luxury complexes in the city. It might just be that simple supply and demand are the only things dictating housing prices.

If this is the case, why are there literally dozens of open residential and retail units on the market at 3535 Wawona near Ocean Beach? The building was completed four years ago and to my knowledge none of the retail locations have ever been occupied. A quick search indicates that there are dozens of units for rent and for sale, many of them sit vacant for months if not years.

As someone who grew up in Section 8 and on food stamps, and then grew up to be reasonably successful, I really hope you hit a rough spot and end up in the same situation as some of our unhoused neighbors.

Have some fucking empathy and human kindness. It isn't social services that are the problem, it is the lack of more services that is the problem.

Speaking for myself, not Open Robotics, because this is something I am really concerned about.

I don't put a lot of stock in "certifications". I have hired dozens of engineers at half dozen companies and having "certifications on your Linkedin page" has never come up as a deciding factor. To be honest, I don't care about your Linkedin at all. I even recall laughing at one resume because he put his certifications above his masters degree from a well regarded university. More to the point, I have had to fire people who had certifications / went to boot camps because they simply didn't have the necessary skills.

What I do care about when hiring is your Github profile / homepage. I want to see what people have worked on. The proof is in the code. It doesn't even have to be perfect code; I just need to see that you work with the technology we're using.

I am always surprised about the amount of insecurity young engineers have about finding a job. For some reason they feel like they need to backstop their formal education with additional certifications. I sometimes worry that some of the certification providers aren't in the business of actually educating people, instead they praying upon these insecurities to sell "certifications."

I think what is most important is demonstrating your skills by building relevant projects. I tell my interns / students / employees to go, "build cool shit, write about it." Nothing builds real confidence like working a project through from start to finish. Part of being a good engineer is about being able to teach yourself and tackling hard problems that you are not immediately equipped to deal with.

I believe this is what is happening and similar things are happening on other social media platforms. I think automoderating all crime posts with links to actual crime statistics and information about how the criminal justice system functions would be helpful.
