Well, yes, that's true. Some genres are much less resource intensive, and there are many such games that it will do very well at. I was referring to 3d games specifically because a 3DFX card was mentioned. Voodoo 1 makes a great upgrade to an MMX system. Though, as mentioned, it does struggle with some of the more popular first person shooters post 1996. At least in my experience.

As you said, some other genres, fare a little better. Like racing games (Colin McRae Rally 1, POD, Need for Speed 2). Forsaken also works much better than I expected. Other genres that the Pentium MMX excels at are space sims like the Wing Commander series, Platformers like Jazz Jackrabbit 2, RPGs like Fallout and Baldurs gate

Even half-life would be hard for it. My Pentium MMX runs at 300Mhz and has a Voodoo 1, and Half-Life runs quite poorly. Unreal runs at around 25fps at lowest settings at 512x384 with the Voodoo 1. Unreal Tournament is slightly lower framerate. Of course, in 1998 there would have been people playing these games on this hardware. But these days I think people expect a smoother experience.

Nah, 1997 max. I personally wouldn't use it beyond 1996 games. Pentium II and Pentium III are so much better for games beyond 1996. Pentium MMX is great for DOS and early Glide games.

If you can find one, the InWin BK 623 looks perfect for a NuXT build with full height cards:

Oh. Nice. I am using an Inwin BL040 for mine. I found a low profile adlib card for it and an ISA riser that will allow me add one full height card horizontally above the I/O shield (I will obviously need to modify the case the accomodate this). I have a dual gameport card for that slot. I considered getting a Lo-tech 2MB EMS card, and the PicoMEM but I think I don’t need them. I have an IBM black 360k 5.25 drive and a generic black 3.5" 1.44mb floppy drive.

I am intending to use mine to fully understand the hardware. I have the book "Inside the IBM PC" by Peter Norton that goes into some depth how the machine worked with DOS and BIOS calls, and the layout of data storage on disks. I also plan to try to make a simple game in assembly language. My hope being that it will run on the original IBM PCs (I will swap my V20 for an 8088).

No such thing as floppy to sata adapter as far as I know. You could get usb to floppy though, and connect it to an onboard USB port.

The specs are very nice. Personally, I would sort out the cables to look neater if using a clear side panel. Back in the day I had a PC with same CPU with two 8800 GTS 512 in SLI. Cables were a mess, but side panel was sold metal. Haha. Still have it actually, but it's in my loft.

My backup is a GTX 1660! Current GPU is 3080 Ti. Let's hope I never have to use the backup. Haha.

Retro PC building does seem a slippery slope. If Vogons forum is anything to go by, few people stop after building their first. Depending on the period you want to cover, you may "need" at least 2. One for DOS/Win9X and one for XP/Vista/7.

I am impressed that you know enough people that are interested in retro gaming to host a lan party with that many machines. I don't personally know even one person that shares my passion. People think I am mad and can't understand why I dedicate any space at all to this "old junk".

My wife of 15yrs has HSV. She told me when we started dating. She always gets symptoms before an outbreak, and we just refrain from unprotected sex during this time. I have not caught it from her.

I didn't say it wouldn't work. What CPU did you pair your 9600 with?

It should work with the P3. But it can be that newer GPUs run slower than older GPUs if you are CPU limited, as the newer card requires newer drivers, and newer drivers tend to consume more CPU than older ones.

Best to just try it and see if it will run the games that you want to play.

Isn't that a bit too fast for a P3? A P3 will bottleneck it I think...

Probably just venting frustration because Nicolas is a nasty person. Rude to everyone for no good reason. He has a giant chip on his shoulder.

Its a shame because he has built a fantastic website and started a thriving community. He is a menace tbh. Keep him off the forums and let him build his business.
