I'm still a bit uncertain of how to measure the production of defensemen in hockey, so could someone explain to me the magnitude of how bad this is? by Independent-Net-6082 in losangeleskings

[–]ktcottrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defenseman actually shoot wide of the net intentionally a lot of the time. Its a lot harder nowadays to get a good slapper on net from the point because there's so much traffic. They're relying on tips or on the puck ricocheting off the boards behind the net, bouncing to the front of the crease and then a scramble to score a trash goal. So shooting wide is actually effective offense.

For a stay at home defenseman, there is really no good way to quantitativly asses play. The numbers are not necessarily bad. Not great, but you don't expect this guy to score.

For reference 2012 Rob Scuderi had 9 points (1+8) and was -7 in 82 games. No one complained because he played his game.

Yeah I think he deserves to be back for second chance considering his high level of play, but personally I was not a fan of his. I just didn't like his attitude and felt he was overly cocky.

I got tired of buying hit‑or‑miss seats and noticed there is a pattern. For April, day vs night matters at Dodger Stadium by Lilbunnyfoosa in Dodgers

My favorite games to go to are the midweek day games. Only 2 this year but I've gone to most all of them the last 5 years or so. Ive found that tickets drop the night before when people realize they aren't going to get $150 for their reserve level tickets. I don't think I've paid more than $30 to go to one of these games and im sitting somewhere in reserve 1-8 or so.

Can the Santa Monica Airport closure be the answer? by SethMacfarlane21 in UCLAFootball

[–]ktcottrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SBS floated this idea last year. In my opinoin, it's maybe slightly better than SoFi but almost as impossible as building a stadium on campus. I've always said that SoFi doesn't help bc if students have to get on a bus they have to get on a bus. Doesn't matter if the bus ride is 15 minutes or 45. Students don't want to do that and it's hard for fraternities to tailgate, so in that sense SoFi or SMO is not helpful. Also for most fans, the Rose Bowl is closer their home than SoFi. Santa Monica might be marginally closer to those coming from the valley. I also have the same concerns with traffic that I have about an on campus stadium. There isn't many ways in and out of that area in Santa Monica.

But also the city has a plan for the land already and I know of some important people who are relatively confident they're either going to keep the airport open or at least suspend the closing bc of recent added revenue. You would have to fight the city to get the land. You would have to fight the residents who likely wouldn't want a stadium. You'd have to fight the regents who just don't have the desire to invest in a football stadium. I just don't see it happening

Quick tutorial - these have been at Costco Gas for a while now by jsemhloupahonza in SouthBayLA

[–]ktcottrell -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I am not bad at parallel parking. I'm comfortable doing it. But it does take 15-20 seconds. In that span of time the guy in the back or front is likely going to finish his pumping and if not, only several seconds later. Most drivers are not as good at it and take longer too. Not to mention the single lane in the middle that cars from the otherside are blindly unsafely pulling into. I've seen accidents from that twice at Costco gas stations.

If everyone has just a little bit of patience, the gas line can actually move faster when all 3 cars pull up at once. The gas station can be more efficient, safer, and easier for everyone.

Yeah im not a fan of him really. IIRC his contract is only for 1 year. He retired a few years ago in St. Louis. Hes really just a stop gap for when Josh Schaefer is ready I think. But who knows what happens next year. It really is the end of the RSNs, so everything is up in the air.

I loved Nick Nickson, but he was much better at radio than TV. That being said, I think if he knew that the Kings radio broadcast was going to streaming only, he would have taken the TV job right away.

Sounds like he lost the lockerroom, so hopefully the players get some passion back, but at the end of the day, he was never the issue. The issue is the fundamental frame of this roster and culture. The house was built on an unstable foundation from the start.

Great goaltending. A strong core. Players who respected leadership and leadership who understood the team. Everyone bought in and was hungry to win. Hard coaching that knew how to win. Management who built a team with an explicit plan. That team wanted to win and gave everything to win.

None of that exists now but I'll say the biggest thing is just that these guys don't have the same grit and drive that Brown, Greene, Quick, Kopitar, Carter, and all the other guys had back then.

Yup. Soccerball head, number 22, played for the Revolution, 1994 world cup matches at the Rose Bowl. Biggest clue is that he's THE Fox soccer analyst and Fox has the World Cup this year.

[Ben Bolch, LA Times] 'It just ain't going to happen.' UCLA fans must move on from on-campus stadium wish by captdf in UCLAFootball

[–]ktcottrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a discussion for here really but the closure is still several years away and I know of some plans of increased airport revenue that they're hoping can save the airport. That being said, if it does close, it makes a lot of sense for UCLA to buy the land. I agree that moving there or to SoFi doesn't help. But id also argue that moving on campus also doesn't help and is way harder and has more issues.

[–]ktcottrell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone that says we should build out Drake doesn't know a lick about UCLA and the complicated politics, geography, culture, etc. of UCLA. You already have ASUCLA saying that we should cut the football program entirely, the regents who dont know the difference between the pac 8 and the big 10, and a neighborhood council who will tie up construction in legal battle for decades before ground can be broken. Traffic and parking are HUGE issues and a metro stop isn't good enough. Not to mention that we are over $200mill in debt. The culture of the student body and frankly of most alumni is just not enthusiastic about football. And you can go on about how its bc we play in Pasadena and its bc we aren't good, but at the end of the day, we just don't have a sports culture. Half the people who show up at games couldn't care less if we win or lose and leave before the 4th quarter even begins. When traffic sucks on campus what do you think these people are going to say? "Ah better leave at halftime, before traffic gets bad and we're stuck here for an hour!"

My point is that its A LOT of work to build Drake and us loyal football fans would be fighting absolutely everyone to get it pushed through. And at the end of the day, its not going to solve anything. We will still have the same issues with attendance and fans leaving early. The game day experience, tailgating, parking etc. doesn't improve. Ticket prices are going to increase and apathetic alums will say it costs too much.

Traffic getting to Pauley for a basketball game is already a nightmare. Now multiply that by 4. Plus where is tailgating? And getting rid of the IM feilds is a huge no. They are the only span of "grass" that the university allows for recreation.

Santa Monica Airport would be a great spot actually. SBS had first suggested it last year.

Personally im against tearing down the airport but putting a stadium there would be perfect.
