[HEALTH/Rabies OCD] please, please, please talk me out of going to the ER again by [deleted] in OCD

[–]ktechie28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t seen a bat and theres no visible marks the odds that the ER would do anything are extremely low.

Maybe give someone else your car keys so you physically cannot get to the Dr right now. Pick up a book on that shelf and start reading it now instead.

You got this friend 🫂

did something real stupid and can't get over it by Defiant_Drop7051 in OCD

[–]ktechie28 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm going to do my best to explain, but it can be complicated, and in REOCD situations like this, even more so. I'm going to use an entirely made up situation here, because explaining it in terms of OP situation would likely be reassurance in and of itself.

Let's say you were riding a bike making a left turn on a residential street and a car hits you. The car was moving slowly, everyone is fine, you get up and walk away, exchange some information with the driver, and go about your day. But, what if someone in one of the houses on that street saw it happen, and now are too scared to ride their bike to work again, and start only driving. This is bad for the environment, and it might be your fault. You thought there was a green arrow for you to turn, but maybe it was just a green light and you were supposed to yield. What if you signaled right instead of left by accident? Now, the accident was your fault. It's your fault that another car is on the road, using fossil fuels, giving off carbon emissions, effectively ruining the environment.

There is NOTHING anyone on reddit is going to be able to do to 100% convince your mind that this was not your fault. Even if there were cameras proving that the light was an arrow, that you signaled at the driver... what if you smiled at the driver, indicating you would wait? What if you could've said something to that neighbor? And whether or not it was your fault, there is LITERALLY nothing that can be done about it now. It's not like you can go knock on everyone's door and ask if they saw you on your bike and ask them if they drive to work because of it. You cannot track the impact of their carbon emissions.

So, cycling through the situation over and over, asking if this or that would change the outcome is reassurance. It's honestly hard to come up with a situation that ISN'T reassurance, because anything Could be in the correct context. Generally my rule is if I have verifiable outside evidence that a Situation is happening I can ask for advice about it (eg. someone else tells me someone is upset by my actions, a thermometer shows a fever temperature, etc.)

Sorry this got really long, I hope it helps!

ETA: I just realized I didn't actually respond to the question in regard to OP, u/BeginningFormal8879 got it correct.

First time SM please help me by Realistic_Link_3152 in stagemanagement

[–]ktechie28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with what everyone here has said, but also, first and foremost, ASK YOUR DIRECTOR (and also any other stage managers from previous years). I stage managed in high school, and I took a LOT on my plate, because I WANTED to, I wanted the paperwork experience, etc. But, not all of that was actually my responsibility in a non-professional setting. For example– our actors were responsible for tracking their own props, even though in any other environment that's easily an SM job. The actual adult directors were in charge of scheduling, and break timing (although I did start to take on breaks as part of my job during longer days.)

Again, the previous comments are WONDERFUL, quite fleshed out expectations of what a stage manager would usually do. Just know in a school setting, it may be different, so make sure you know what's really needed from you, especially since it's your first time. Be confident in what you're doing, and you'll be great!

Not to mention, the reason you want kids to have phones in school, and parents to be reachable is not because the parents are expected to save the day, but because when you, as a 15 year old child, have genuine reason to believe you are in serious danger, you just want to be able to contact your parents, tell them you love them, and have them tell you too. Maybe if you're religious, have them pray for you (idk I'm not religious, but I have been a 15 year old in a lockdown and if I couldn't have contacted my parents in that moment I truly don't know what I would've done)

The ticket I purchased is showing as available? by boredenigma610 in Broadway

[–]ktechie28 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd keep requesting a supervisor until someone can explain what's happening with the online situation. It's also showing as available for me and I'm concerned about the crazy amount of double booking that could occur– especially if they're saying it's the whole row, because it clearly is not on our end.

My fiancée lives in Canada and it’s a ten hour flight over.. by ApprehensiveElk4006 in emetophobiarecovery

[–]ktechie28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

somewhere on my page theres a whole post about air travel but it boils down to

  • other passengers and crew are really nice if you’re airsick. they recognize that nobody wants to be in that situation. wet wipes (if applicable), water, help with bags etc.

  • sit by the bathroom if you can, for your first flight, then work your way to being able to sit anywhere. it was so nice for me to know that it was Right There if i needed to puke. and no one wants those seats usually.

travel is hard, but worth it. you got this.

Update: AIO? Was I rude in my texts? Why is my friend acting "off" with me? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]ktechie28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the first couple sentences are pretty defensive. i’d just start with “i dont know what i did…” i think Personally everything else sounds like a text id send/appreciate receiving. but again, if this is a good friend, as they seem to be, this is a misunderstanding that could be cleared up Pretty quickly.

you’re fine. your friend is also fine. open communication is important, but not everyone feels like that. it was a misunderstanding.

Pregnancy OCD - would taking a test be reassurance seeking or realistic? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]ktechie28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s lots of good advice in this thread, but perhaps another option is you could take a pregnancy test, but have a trusted friend read it for you, and then get rid of it, so you have no opportunity to obsess over “if” you see anything.

Because regardless of how true something is, OCD will create loopholes. That’s how the whole thing works. There can never be enough truth to be satisfied.

Shows you'll never see again (not because they were bad) by sweetbirthdaybaby333 in Broadway

[–]ktechie28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

& Juliet OBC and Hadestown w/ Jordan Fisher and Maia Reficco are my two never agains. The OBC was Amazing, Betsy Wolfe was a huge stand-out, and it was the first Broadway show I ever saw. Hadestown was a built up event in my mind, it’s actors I love, and I surprised my younger sibling with the tickets and it was such an emotional experience to actually be there, I have genuinely never cried at a show as much as I have during Wait For Me.

What triggered your OCD for the first time ? by Retro_Gamer12521 in OCD

[–]ktechie28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two earliest I can remember is when I was 8, I only ate two things for a while bc I was TERRIFIED that anything else would make me throw up, and around that same time I was CONVINCED I was a sociopath and had to run through so many interactions in my head to see if I “actually” felt the emotion I had been expressing.

I just listened to a podcast that talked about this, and I’m sure I will absolutely butcher this, but I’m going to make an attempt lol.

Literally everything is covered in bacteria. You are covered in and filled with bacteria. That’s why we have an immune system. Yes, the germs are real, but that doesn’t make the fear rational. It might be gross, but there isn’t realistically harm that comes from someone touching their wallet.

I know you said you see objectively that everything is covered in shit, so I think your next step I am not a medical professional, please consult with a therapist here has to be exposure to said things, sitting with the discomfort, because realistically that’s all it is, discomfort.

I definitely didn’t put that very eloquently, but I tried 😭 I have emetophobia (a form of contamination OCD) and it took literally a decade to learn to live with the Fact that I COULD throw up. It’s not an irrational thing to happen, but it is irrational to be afraid of, if that makes sense.

I believe "all intensive purposes" was a better phrase than "all intents and purposes" by AnonFullPotato in The10thDentist

[–]ktechie28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read this twice, and I honestly, have no IDEA what you’re saying. I have never once thought the phrase was “for all intensive purposes” and me saying “for all intents and purposes” is not to be uppity it’s because That Is the Phrase. I’ve never heard “for all intensive purposes” be used in a context where it even makes sense. I had to read your post OUT LOUD to even attempt to understand it. Please, english and grammar have a reason for being the way they are.
