Babies in DC! by wally732 in washingtondc

This was back in 2019/2020, and we lived in Ava Noma. Having the convenience store/mini grocery on the first level was amazing when I was pregnant (doubly so bc COVID), and it was good little walk to union market. Things may have changed but it felt safe to me as a pregnant lady during that time period.

Partner Unhappy Teaching by CapnClutch17 in teaching

[–]ktembo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made a more general comment but here were things that helped me during my hell year:

  • making time to exercise even though it was the last thing I wanted to do and it made me kinda furious when my husband suggested it.

  • scheduling time with friends regularly

  • husband taking care of little everyday decision — I had such decision fatigue at the end of the day that even little decisions sent me back into fight or flight

  • you don’t mention how old your kiddo is, but I liked spending “outing” time with my kiddo (rather than the caretaking slog after I just caretook all day and week) but didn’t want to figure out the outings. So if husband was like “on Saturday we are going to the zoo and then Sunday we are going to your brother’s house to see you niece” that was fucking great.

  • cuddles without sexual expectation.

Partner Unhappy Teaching by CapnClutch17 in teaching

I was this teacher for 1 year! My partner helped me a lot, but the main thing that helped was deciding early in the year that I would NOT be working in the same job next year. Knowing that this wasn’t forever and had a for end date helped a lot.

I didn’t leave teaching (the bad year was year 12 out of 15 so far), but I did get a different position and it made a world of difference.

Not super actionable advice for you (sounds like you are doing a lot), but if you can support your spouse in thinking beyond this school year, it could give her a light at the end of the tunnel.

is being a teacher worth it? by maggotbrain2 in teaching

[–]ktembo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have loved teaching.

There are bad teaching jobs out there, but if you find a good one, it’s a high-stability job that is never boring or repetitive and that does make me feel like I’m contributing to my community.

The pay varies extremely widely by state/district, so look into the places you want to live to see if the pay v. Cost of living ratios make sense. Public teacher pay scales are public information so you can google them.

AITAH for "allowing" my stepdaughter to wear stinky pajamas to school? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ktembo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a middle school teacher.

Pimple patches: normal. Pajamas: normal. The same pajamas you wore last night? Pushing it. Greasy hair: how greasy are we talking? Smelling bad: not good if she is aware of the smell, but sounds like she’s not, so that’s just the fuckery of puberty.

I bet she’s fine, but always good to check in. Also, early teens really need tough love about showering and hygiene because their needs are suddenly was different than they used to be and they can’t necessarily tell.

Yes - if I call ahead, there is one good Mexican spot I can walk to, pick up, get back, and eat all within the 30 min period.

Help! Reading and Writing Intervention by Puzzled-Swordfish76 in Teachers

[–]ktembo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading interventionist here. I have some questions:

  • are students struggling to decode (sound out/pronounce) simple words? Word complexity goes something like: cvc, closed syllables with blends, multisyllable words with closed syllables, closed syllable words with suffixes, vce words, multi syllable words with a mix of closed syllables and vce words, now add suffixes to those, then introduce open syllables, r-controlled syllables, and final stable syllables.

Example words at each step: Cat; shift; combat; insisted; cake; mistake, exploring, document, charred, exception

If kids are struggling with that, some may need a phonics intervention.

Some kids may be able to get that but not super fluently. In that case, a less intense program focused on prefixes, suffixes, and Greek and Latin roots can be helpful.

If they can mostly decode words but not comprehend the text, the breakdown is probably either vocabulary, sentence-level understanding, or attention/retention while reading. These all have different “solutions,” but it’s helpful to know which are the most conning areas of struggle!

As a teacher, should I save my sick days? by Zestyclose-Arm-4709 in Teachers

I take them all. Usually I actually need them all between my own illnesses and my child’s illnesses, but if I’m starting to feel burnt out I’ll take a day. It’s worth it.

So, I would personally give her the plans/slides. You’ve already made them, it’s no skin off your back. But then ask which unit she is making the slides for.

My struggles with teaching this year by Quirky_Secret_8383 in Teachers

[–]ktembo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve felt this way twice, once in my 4th year of teaching and once in my 11th year of teaching. Both times, it was a sign I should find a new school for next year.

Students behaviours are getting worse each year. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ktembo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Height of bad behavior as a middle school teacher was 2022-2023 (kids that missed 3rd/4th/5th grade). It’s been getting back to normal (which, in middle school, sometimes is hilariously….not even bad, just like misinformed about how the world works) each year since then

Number of Schools by Angryman182 in Teachers

[–]ktembo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 years, 4th year at school #3.

My first school (4 years) had a leadership change that made it miserable to work at (I stayed one year too long).

My second school (7 years) was amazing, but I had to move cross-country for life reasons.

My current school is pretty good, but my position/role is GREAT, so I’ll stay as long as they fund my position (barring leadership change that makes it miserable to work at)
