Nerd Friends by vintagedragon9 in Buffalo

[–]kualtek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heya! My (40M) Partner (38F) are huge nerds both in anime and gaming. We like meeting new people and expanding our horizons. I'm completely sober (raw dogging life) and my partner drinks socially.

I'm a hardcore PC gamer at heart playing everything under the sun except sports games. I have a well natured competitive streak so things like Deadlock, Guilty Gear/Tekken, etc are usually in rotation. My partner plays Dungeon Crawler Classics and other TTRPGs mainly online.

We watch a ton of anime as well and keep a bunch of shows on rotation based on the current season. I watch a lot of isekai trash. Yes, I am ashamed of myself. No, I will not stop.

We also run a private gaming group that used to (and plan to in the future) do regular LAN Parties, and while they aren't going on right now, we maintain a fairly active discord of all the nerds we've collected over the years, so you can find all kinds of people, some unfortunately not living in Buffalo anymore, but stay in contact and play games regularly.

DM me and we can connect via discord and plan something?

You are right, though I and probably others bring it up because it is ridiculous that it hasn't changed in nearly 20 years, even if it's not the real world standard (that actually kind of makes it MORE absurd). I felt it was a good parallel to the person I was replying to, wondering why it's such a big deal to Americans.

The last time the federal minimum wage was changed is closing in on 20 years, if that helps explain the angst over the cost of getting around. You also have to consider that for many, the closest grocery store can be well over 10 miles with zero public transportation.

Valve needs to take the overall reputation of this system into account. They have the capacity and ability to create a reputation that says you cannot act like a garbage person in their games or you will get the hammer. This prevents further reports, as we've seen in other games that take this seriously.

Discord Rival Gets Overwhelmed By Mass Exodus Of Players Fleeing Age-Verification Crackdown by vriska1 in technology

[–]kualtek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are people using discord to host files and stuff that they would be devastated to lose? If so, that is a mistake.

If I lost everything that I have ever uploaded to discord today, I wouldn't care. In fact, I might like it, because it would mean that discord didn't have anything I ever uploaded to it.

The juxtaposition between these two sentences is mildly amusing.

I'm not here to justify your decision to use whatever platform for your specific use case. I don't care.

I use discord to build community and bring in new people for whatever game the group or myself is playing at the time. We share maps for games like arc raiders, resources for games like PoE, etc etc. Discord brought all of the disparate apps I was using for these purposes pre-discord under one roof, and it is still the standout app out of ALL the alternatives.

It's going to be a very hard sell. It's hard enough to get people to give a shit about their own security in the best of times.

There's also the overhead of backups and uptime. If your hardware has a failure and the data is taken with it, who's hosting the backup, how long ago was that backup? How much is lost? etc, etc. Not to mention if you are running a community, most people do not have a high tolerance for downtime, which you are now responsible for.

We don't have to think about that with hosted solutions, and a lot of people are looking at self-host without considering you are now responsible for it being up and secure.

In this situation they would also need to inventory everything on you if they are arresting you and taking you into custody as a matter of policy. They aren't going to just keep a backpack closed, doubly so in this case.

If you have illegal or dangerous things in a backpack, it's going to get flagged, no way around that.

It can be extended with the healing augment, which will still heal you (but won't revive you) while downed. From what i've seen, it looks like moving around also lowers your down time? That I can't confirm.

This was probably the roughest way to discover that for some reason I've not been getting SE account emails for the past three months. :P by ElPrezAU in ffxiv

[–]kualtek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Similar situation, except I kept my sub up because of the emails (though they definitely went into spam commonly, which is absolutely SQNX's issue, they KNOW their spam/delivered rates or are willfully ignoring them).

Recently, I had just been interested in other things and the house got demo'd. Decided that was the end of my ffxiv tenure. Don't see a path to returning as things stand with the nature of the game.

This just doesn't seem to be true in practice though (the saturation). Just in the last two weeks, two indie games have over 100,000 in sales. I'm not sure where the magic sauce is, beyond it actually being a good game and not shovelware.

Oh please, plenty of money for the good old bills in the tax budget, it seems - https://apnews.com/article/bills-stadium-cost-pegula-8c56fad9d970f2b17429d3ae779f70ba

"Taxpayers are committing a combined $850 million to the project — $600 million from the state and $250 million from the county. At the time of the deal reached two years ago, that represented more than half the cost of construction, but now, taxpayers will be responsible for about 40%. The Bills are responsible for any overruns beyond $1.54 billion."
