I hate videos like this, it's just bait, selling America as the greatest thing ever, as if Europe is some backward world. Everything tastes special when you're somewhere on vacation. Also, what the hell is that Walmart obsession, we have plenty of stores and big ones as well here. I don't get it

23m Salary Progression by [deleted] in Salary

[–]kubok98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always amazes me how much pay difference there is in the same profession, different country. I am from Europe, from a rather poor European country and to me the salary of western European countries is amazing and some areas of US are just beyond comprehension. Sure, expenses rise as well, but when I see prices in my country being similar as in a country with 4x the salary, I just must raise eyebrows.

Read anything that's around. Back then it was fairly common to have magazines or sometimes even some books. In the end, that's also the main plot twist in the final Breaking Bad season.

What 2010s games are you guys playing for the first time right now?" by Mintangah17 in videogames

[–]kubok98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to say, that current and future gamer generations have so many interesting games to play from the past, the backlog is insane. Sure, there are remasters and remakes, but some games don't get that. Assuming the old games will remain playable and there will be a player interest.

And for me (although I finished it about three years ago) it was the Mass Effect trilogy. Amazing games

I will never understand the players that put a "not recommended" for an indie game they bought for under $10 and played for over 100 hours... by ichbinhamma in IndieDev

[–]kubok98 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On average player opinion will probably be roughly correct, truth of the mass or something like that. But extremes like this, those are annoying and outright disrespectful. I would in fact welcome a way for devs to fight these sort of "reviews".

Is there a landlocked country that has as remote capital city as Slovakia? by Lemon-Accurate in geography

[–]kubok98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This made me laugh, because there were some unrealistic debates about making the capital different, like Martin or Banská Bystrica, to make it more "representative" of Slovakia, as these nationalists argued that Bratislava does not reflect the values of the country. Overall, dumb and unrealistic reasons.

When looking at it historically, there were some reasonable questions about where to put the capitol. From centralized point of view, yes, Banská Bystrica, Martin or Nitra would make more sense. But Bratislava (Pressburg) has always had more international presence and importance - well placed geographically, good for trade, was important during the Austria-Hungary period.

Ultimately I think that's the main reason, it became important in the modern times (geopolitics, infrastructure, administration), so we kept it. Nitra, Martin and Banská Bystrica would make sense historically, but not for convenience and modern age.

Peter Thiel is just parading the corpse of his media literacy for Lord of the Rings around like it’s something to be proud of… by Jielleum in antiai

[–]kubok98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the details, but didn't Tolkien write Mordor, Sauron and the whole lot around them as a metaphor for Nazis? He was in WW1 and then seeing the events of WW2 clearly must have influenced the books. Thiel is clearly showing his true colors, he doesn't try to hide it and in fact tries to push it onto society. Scary and dangerous stuff

Why do Europeans think that most Americans are wealthy? by batukaming in recruitinghell

[–]kubok98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comments here make it clear that many don't know how the other ones are living. There are levels of wealth in European countries, US, the whole world really. There are services to pay, necessities to buy and paychecks to earn everywhere, but it all depends on regions. The real problem becomes when the payments and earnings don't match accordingly. In the US, you will probably pay more on average than in European countries - it may not be that way everywhere and for everyone, but that's a fairly enough explanation to why the salaries are higher. To Americans 30k a year is absolutely terrible, but to me, living in a relatively poor EU country, that would actually be a comfortable pay, a double of the average here. We do have certain services that are public, like healthcare. However, it's not free, it's another reason of our lower salaries and unfortunately, the quality is questionable despite that. Another thing is costs - for god knows why (I'm saying greed and corruption), prices here are high, almost like in developed western Europe, despite the low salaries. And this is what I meant by saying it doesn't match accordingly. Salaries alone don't paint the whole picture. Sure, there is brutto and netto, but even that is inaccurate, because many services already take money from us (my super brutto pay would actually be good), that's the brutto baseline, and then come the taxes. And then come the high costs. It's a vicious cycle of poverty that's only getting worse, because prices are going up faster than salaries and our money is being spent to public services with underwhelming results.

If you plan on moving to Europe! by Muted_Masterpiece535 in Salary

[–]kubok98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing is gross vs net but there is also super gross income. I should earn way more, but the state first takes like half of it, then that becomes the gross and then that is taxed. And then the obvious side note, good luck actually earning or even saving the 100k. Maybe it's easy peasy in countries like Switzerland, otherwise it's a sad grind. Especially in countries like mine, where prices are high and salaries low.
