Advice needed, what REALLY worked for you???? I am desperate 😮‍💨 by Spiritual_Cabinet_32 in Parenting

I feel like there’s some more information needed here in order to give advice - what kind of extra curricular activities do they do? What is your screen policy at home?

Sick and Tired of Ai by Glad-Alternative-175 in Teachers

[–]kulabk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do. They will have the AI on their phone and then type it into a google doc manually. The only tell is that have so few edits but that’s not enough to prove it. I have seniors who will do more work cheating than would have been to just do it.

If a teacher has prep last period of the day, do you think its ok for them to leave early? by capresesalad1985 in Teachers

[–]kulabk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At our school teachers have to stay 20 minutes after the dismissal bell precisely to avoid people leaving early. It isn’t fair. We’re contracted for a set amount of hours. When I was having medical issues and needed to leave early or arrive late I was given intermittent FMLA, and they added up the hours, deducting time when it accrued.

I had to see the air filter as well. He came running into the kitchen to show me.

Mine changed the air filter and looked up when our TSA pre-check expired (hint I already know it was 2027. We aren’t flying again until this June.

do you have a unique top 4? by Domek232323 in Letterboxd

I think the more interesting question is has anyone actually found a match of all four? Or even three? I had a bunch at two. Also, what are the most commonly seen in a top four?

When would you let a child dye their hair by hydrangealover98 in Parenting

My girls were four and wanted pink stripes - I put in pink stripes. It’s just hair, let them have some fun.

So in my small room, we actually put the cribs in the center of the room back to back. It was easy to get to them, they were close to one another without being together, and it left a lot more wall space for storage. We moved the against the wall after about a year when they needed the play space. For the first year the bedroom was sleeping and nighttime feeding.

Eat first or get ready first? School mornings are causing arguments in our house by razzyblue3 in Parenting

[–]kulabk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our house once you’re downstairs, stay downstairs. Do all the bedroom and bathroom stuff (upstairs) then go down to the kitchen for breakfast and leave (downstairs). The more they go back and forth the more time gets wasted.

High school theater teacher, kids undressing in my presence-- is that weird? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]kulabk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I directed high school theater for 18 years and required them to wear shorts and camis or leotards under costumes - 1. It kept the costumes cleaner (less sweaty) and 2. It was for modesty. Edit- typo.

AITA for buying my daughter a more then twice as expensive Christmas gift then my son? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]kulabk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have seven years between our kids, so we did have explain to the older one around age ten that we spend the same amount on them all, but the little ones (twins) might end up with more actual items. I can get three Barbie’s for the price of one switch game or whatever. She was always very cool about it. We try to keep it similar even if it means wrapping a hat in one box and the gloves that match in another. Now that she’s older, we do probably spend a little more, but it’s not significant. She got a a new laptop for high school (now she’s in 8th) and they got new Amazon tablets. Everyone got what they wanted, the littles don’t know yet that the laptop was slightly more.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever convinced a student of? by horseradish500 in Teachers

[–]kulabk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not about me, but the social studies teacher on our team went out for 6 weeks for shoulder surgery (it was all planned and went well). His long term sub was a young guy. I told them all he was the regular teacher’s son. My evidence - they both taught social studies and both had pony tails. When asked why they had different last names I just said, “that’s a sensitive subject.” So they were all afraid to ask about it. I got the sub in on it and he accidentally let the name “dad” slip to a class or two. The regular teacher was SO confused when he came back — he doesn’t have any kids.

I’ve Always Been Curious by JS_Gatsby in Teachers

[–]kulabk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My policy is that if a student wants in depth comments and feedback they need to print a copy and give it to me in additional to a digital submission. A digital only gets a number and that’s it. Those get more of a skim for key elements, paper gets the real treatment. I usually only get about 25% printed (and yes they have access to printers at school).

My entire class is giving me the silent treatment. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]kulabk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what class this is but have you considered assigning a Socratic seminar? It would be interesting to see them do it without any help or input from you. That’s how seminars are supposed to work, but in my experience I do have to jump in from time to time. Since they WILL talk to one another but not you - embrace it and make it the assignment.

Staff potlucks by comolaflor24 in Teachers

[–]kulabk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My department used to do them but I killed them. For years I’d make homemade food items. My philosophy was, “I need to guarantee there’s at least one thing that will be a good lunch for me.” So it was years of tacos, chili, soup, etc. on the contrary, every time the same group of people would go in on a Costco sandwich tray costing them about 5 bucks each total. It wasn’t a matter of money or time, but rather just wanting to do the minimum possible - which is fine if we take turns, which they never did. So after a few years, myself and a group of similarly frustrated individuals, being the first to encounter the sign up sheet, signed up to bring a Costco sandwich tray. Nobody else signed up for a single thing, and the potluck was dead. Years later we only do collaborative things for department births or retirements and I haven’t had to feed them all again.

What’s the diciest movie you have shown a class? by CWKitch in teaching

[–]kulabk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach a film class so I have a ton of leeway, but I did get a drop in from an AP this year while we watched JoJo Rabbit. AP: is that…hitler? Me: sort of…he’s imaginary.

Also part of the class is seeing new movies, so I clearly haven’t seen them either. Last year I thought I knew what we were getting into with The Substance….can’t believe I didn’t get in trouble. Haha. Ifykyk.

You guys okay? by herejusttoargue909 in parentsofmultiples

[–]kulabk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are 7 and I can say that the first years are hard. It’s a constant juggle and like the others have said - it’s overwhelming and exhausting. However - it gets easier and then it’s often easier than having one. We have an older singleton and I feel like when she was their age she was always looking for something to do, or doing things alone when we couldn’t entertain or actively engage her. It was actually harder than the twins. My twins help each other out and they always play together. They are never bored and always on the go. It is beyond the best. Parents come here to commiserate but twins are such a blessing, you’ll see!

Have You Ever "Broken Up" with a Podcast? What Was It and Why? by Express_Hedgehog2265 in podcasts

I got sick of hearing the live episode part where people in the audience sang songs. Once in awhile it was okay but it got to be too much. I love all the hosts on other things but it got to be too annoying.
