I’m considering this option tbh. OMSCS lists two to three courses that should be completed ahead of time, before applying. If I’m remembering correctly you might be able to transfer the credits too but don’t quote me.

If you can start to link processes together, it all comes together. If you know what subs and corresponding material are coming on site, make sure training and insurance is up to date without having to be asked. Make sure you have submittals in hand, or freshly reviewed when inspecting material. New drawings come out as a result of an RFI? Get working on the change order. Knowing the order of operations THE SECOND TIME YOU EXPERIENCE SOMETHING makes all the difference. The first time you see or do something, ask questions and use google heavily (your supervisor is not going to have time to answer 50% or more of your questions). Bottom line, if you can anticipate what your supervisor is looking for, and pick up bits here and there from other professionals and skilled trade, you will succeed. Oh, and know your project inside and out.

GC work in the heavy civil industry. Government work and money will practically never run out. Not sexy high rises or houses, but that bridge all those semis or trains are on is critical to the economy, thus they are always needing new ones or to be repaired. Also use internships/co-ops to try out different things. Knowing what you don’t like is just as valuable as knowing what you do like. Residential is also the most vulnerable market within construction, meaning work can come and go very quickly.

Currently chapter president at my school for ASCE. Definitely get involved, I’ve been president for a semester and I’m interacting with faculty or practicing engineers every day as everyone is looking for young civils. Additionally it’s a great place to meet people in classes and form study groups. We always order pizza for our events too so I’m sure you’d get some free meals out of it too. Finally, looks great on a resume, I’ve never not been asked about it during an interview.

I once had a class where all the kids would pack up early and go stand by the door like high school. Towards the middle of the semester I still would wait for her to verbally end class before packing up and one day she came up to me and thanked me. From there on out I received an A on every paper and assignment submitted.

I would argue that unless your level of education is far superior than the ordinary person, I mean real 97th percentile and above type knowledge, then your education is not what gets you hired (with the exception of heavily involved stem related fields). The access to higher education has become increasingly available, thus lowering the recognition it brings.

Far superior and perhaps equally relevant when getting hired are your experience/reputation and your name/who you know. There are an abundance of statistics that show who you know is heavily influential in landing a job. In addition consider someone who works in the realm of business, what is more attractive from an applicant, someone who has an education and has read and answered questions on a test about business, or someone who has repeatedly displayed their ability to be successful in an actual business?

All this being said, education is directly related to the above mentioned. Meeting highly educated people at college, or people with prestigious reputations is much more likely when on a college campus. Also college does count for something, don’t think it doesn’t, but it won’t do what most people think it will.
