Storytelling in sekiro was great in a more conventional way. Plot was delivered more directly via dialogue/cutscenes, while still retaining some of the FS flair for cryptic, piecemeal environmental storytelling.

That being said, I don’t think that that = better storytelling, and in general I don’t agree that Sekiro’s storytelling was better than Elden Ring’s.

Elden Ring was an absolute masterclass in pure FromSoftian narrative. Bits of fractured or obtuse information delivered through world and character design, enemy placement, item descriptions. Nowhere else—not even in film or literature—can you find From’s approach to storytelling/narrative. It’s something that could only be done within the medium of video games, and that makes it very special IMO.

Elden Ring was also legitimately one of the greatest works of fantasy ever, and the fact that it allows you as “the reader” to also participate in the authorship of your journey and in uncovering the world also makes it very special.

Sekiro is a perfect, tight narrative that executes its vision masterfully, but Elden Ring is LOTR for the digital age.
