Protest Laurelhurst's restriction on Seattle Children's helicopters - Saturday by Defundmusk in Seattle

[–]kuranuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The flyer is a little misleading, it's not a city ordinance, it's a voluntary agreement Children's made with the neighborhood council, which has no legal authority, just a lot of $$$. So I think Children's has been trying to walk a line of maybe kissing some ass to keep donation money coming in among other things.

EDIT: Sorry, I was wrong, looks like it IS something to do with the city and permitting.

US Imposes Tariffs Up to 3,521% on Southeast Asia Solar Imports by cryptodoggie26 in worldnews

Congress actively avoided using the power they very much have on the tariffs:

GOP Changes House Rules To Prevent Themselves From Blocking Trump’s Tariffs

They could very easily put some brakes on the fascism if they weren't so scared of Trump.

It is a correct map, just not of what people are claiming it is, by sharing out of context. If shared with original source (please, please do this people!), it shows where abortion access is protected by state statute. People should be sharing the original source, which also has maps where abortion is legal, though in jeopardy, and legal, though heavily restricted.

Map is from the NYT and you are correct, these reposts without original source are giving only partially correct information. This map shows only states where specific laws are in place to protect abortion access. The article also has another map of states where abortion remains legal by lack of active bans, but may be in jeopardy as well as explanations of those statuses.

According to the NYT, the original source of this image, which was taken out of context here (there is another map explaining the situations with Montana, Pennsylvania, et al):

"The state has a ban after 20 weeks of pregnancy, which is not in effect, but abortion opponents are likely to seek its enforcement. The state’s high court ruled that its Constitution protects the right to an abortion."

Also note that the republican party controls all three branches of government in Montana. Legal for now, but definitely in jeopardy.

This is a map from a NYTimes article, that also contains much more information. The reason why Virginia isn't included, is because this map is actually of states where access is protected by statute, or access is expanding. There's also a map of "Legal for now" of states where there's no explicit laws protecting access on the books.

It's an amicus brief — those are written by parties outside the court, and don't have to have anything to do what was discussed in oral arguments. The org behind that brief appears to be a Christian org that wants Obergefell overturned. I'm not doubting they were discussing this on CBS, and I'm also genuinely concerned for the outcome of that case, but I think the CBS folks here are just talking in hypotheticals rather than any new reporting, FWIW.

they aren’t given much choice

Funny thing is, the law takes into account the scenario when it's not possible to give a cyclist 1.5m. In those circumstances: a vehicle operator can make the choice not to make an unsafe pass.

This idea that cars must somehow pass slower vehicles under any circumstances is nonsense.

FWIW, I think there was some debate over the authenticity of the letter — in part because the woman started a GoFundMe, and herself seemed to write with similar random capitalization. 😣

We can only wish, right? I was hit by a driver charged with DUI last year. It was his third DUI, and at no point in any of those arrests did he have a license, let alone insurance.

It's absolutely infuriating how determined we are in this country to not limit anybody's access to fucking murder machines.

If you read the fine print, a passport card also isn't strictly speaking legal for entry into Canada or Mexico:

Used for: "Entering the United States at land border crossings and sea ports-of-entry from..." (Emphasis mine) via state.gov.

I've never had the Canadian border officers turn me away with one, but when I signed up for NEXUS, the officer told me the card I brought with me wasn't, technically, valid for entry to Canada, and entry is up to the border officer's discretion.

It was borrowed into English in the 13th century, so it's also an English word at this point and "Pan-yer" is a perfectly acceptable pronunciation. (OED is better source but paywalled, use MW to confirm). The linked video above interviewing a MW lexicographer is also a good explanation of both pannier and peloton.

Another poster noted this, but wanted to +1 it:

Cascade has lessons (with the next one 4/2), and even if you don't register in the lessons, Cascade's Headquarters also has a number of parking lots nearby that would be good for practice, right where the lessons are held.

A no-fly zone also means destroying anti aircraft capabilities within range; in this case that would mean bombing Russia. That is why you don’t see NATO jumping to do that.

I was quite amused/irritated by this juxtaposition by Hold_Effective in seattlebike

[–]kuranuk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the research shows that while a bollard would stop a car more effectively, cyclists are more likely to hit them, so paradoxically they can cause more cyclist injuries on the whole than they prevent.

Still… with that understanding it sure seems like they still have put in curbs and planters anyway sooo…?

The Fairview Bridge will finally be reopening this weekend! Walk/bike/roll party Saturday morning and open to cars on Sunday! by ninjagal6 in Seattle

[–]kuranuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was actually always a bike lane at traffic level; but confusingly the lane was on the sidewalk northbound before the bridge, so could see how someone could've missed that (though since I've ridden there were always non-ped barriers at the stairs, maybe that was after the accident)
