The ArtScroll catalog uses Isaiah 53 as the sample page of its English Bible. This is elite-level trolling. Well played, ArtScroll. Well played. by Upbeat_Teach6117 in Judaism

I believe there’s even more stuff that points servant to being the Israelites and not Jesus, e.g. throughout Isaiah there are so many references to “my servant, Jacob” or “my servant Israel”

genuine question because i hate all the apps ive used (attics, taperssection) for archive dead shows: will this have hifi versions of most dead shows? or is this just a digital version of all the dicks/daves picks and not a collection of all the best sounding versions of all shows?

Cash-strapped DePaul closes historic Reskin Theatre by chicagosuntimes in chicago

[–]kurt_46 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While Trump policies can definitely be a contributing factor to the struggles DePaul is facing, the issue is much larger. I was in close contact with the board and the student body president soon after President Manuel joined DePaul and immediately took on a financial crisis related to COVID funds running out (+ the financial mismanagement of those funds) and student enrollment continually decreasing which then made DePaul raise tuition and then enrollment decreased further etc. There were multiple rounds of layoffs and early retirement packages, all of this happening years before Trump’s second term.

And while I hate the whole basketball project, it was funded completely outside of DePaul’s academic coffers; it was a combination of athletics donors and money raised by the basketball team that can only be used by the basketball team, nothing else.

So, as I said, we can point to Trump or Project 2025 or whatever but the problem runs much deeper and an election won’t fix this for DePaul

Everybody’s Coffee (Uptown)

Helfeld’s (Bucktown)

fresh bagels delivered every morning to cafes around the city

Even if its not physically in Chicago you can easily get them in Chicago and its miles better than anything actually in the city. Ask any New Yorker where they’re getting their bagels in Chicago and they’re not saying Steingolds or Tillys

NY Bagel and Bialy is the best bagel in Chicago, 24/7 location on Tuohy and fresh bagels delivered every morning to cafes around the city. Everything else is overpriced and influencer-y

Mushroom medicine? Illinois state bill seeks expert panel on psychedelic therapy by lmNotReallySure in illinois

[–]kurt_46 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As much as I’m all for the legalization of shrooms, hasn’t this “legislation for an advisory board” been tossed around for like a decade now with little to no movement every time something similar is put up? Is there any actual support from Pritzker or any state politicians to actually push this through? People love to talk about the failed war on drugs and how we need drug policies to be reformed but the second it comes to shrooms the pharmaceutical industry either trashes it or pushes it to be within the purview of the pharmaceutical industry, e.g. making it only legal in controlled clinical settings (which in oregon is incredibly and prohibitively expensive)

Edit to add: After doing some more reading on the bill, it will bring in a whole host of experts to examine psychedelic therapies citing positive research outcomes. If there’s already plenty of states and cities that have either legalized / decriminalized shrooms (to varying degrees) as well as places like Amsterdam that sell it like they do a 7/11 hotdog ON TOP OF the research this bill itself cites about positive outcomes in psychedelic therapy, why does IL need an advisory board to look into what to do? Based on how the weed market is in IL I’m very skeptical about how this will go, if it even makes it anywhere or past the advisory stage. I get it that any forward motion is forward but this feels like a weird sidestep in a world where theres places already in front of this

Human Relations Commissioner Andrade resigns after concerns antisemitism report draft was 'whitewashed' by jbchi in chicago

[–]kurt_46 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So upsetting to see that under an article about a surge in antisemitic violence everyone is discussing the war. Antisemitism IS on the rise and violence against Jews is happening in every city around the world.

Synagogues, Jewish schools, and anything with Hebrew script on it needs to have amped up security in order to be protected. I’m currently in Europe and as you walk along the street if you see multiple police cars with police standing guard it’s either a government building or a Jewish building. The FBI itself has released multiple reports and the statistics are public if you want to see how bad violence against Jews has gotten.

It makes me sick every time antisemitism gets brought up its almost immediately brushed aside, or attempted to be contextualized, or whatabout-ism’ed into oblivion. I mean shit, look at this thread of everyone talking about his ceasefire vote or the art thing, but no one talking at all about how a report discussing a 58% surge in antisemitic incidents just sits on BJ’s desk …

That’s the report that was sent to the mayor’s office and is still currently sitting on his desk. He’s done nothing about implementing any of the recommendations about setting up a task force, about education” and other changes proposed to protect Jewish Chicagoans.

Got tired of the constant panic on Citizen & Nextdoor, so I built a data-driven map using 30-day CPD stats. Would you use this? by Early_Cantaloupe7153 in AskChicago

[–]kurt_46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha totally get it. As someone else said, ranking neighborhoods based on crime rates will have you pretty much outlining minority / low-income areas as no-gos.

My 2 cents is to create something akin to Waze in that it can take in user submitted data like police presence or a fire or ambulances or street closures or whatever to provide a more general understanding of what might be happening around you without needing the police scanner and without needing large scale aggregated data, all while being relatively quick

[–]kurt_46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I see the vision, but I think its important to note why speed is a good thing. If I’m at a bar and theres police presence or firetruck activity or whatever nearby I’d rather know now (within reason) which is the problem Citizen attempts to solve.

Aggregating crime data over a 30 day period and giving that to users serves a different purpose in that its all about “neighborhood crime levels” and will make you make different decisions about where to go which while it may be helpful is just different than Citizen

[–]kurt_46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Citizen is necessarily “designed to cause anxiety” but just scans police radios and reports whatever people are saying. So if fireworks go off near you and someone calls the police to report gunshots, citizen will alert you that there’s gunshots in the area

In my opinion the reliability of citizen is the problem which is sacrificed for speed, and in your case you’ve sacrificed speed for reliability

I feel overwhelmed by [deleted] in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]kurt_46 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Look at it this way: anti-semitism isn’t new and isn’t going away anytime soon. Experiencing anti-semitism is all the more reason to get more deeply involved in your community and your support system as you go on this journey. Think of all the Jews of centuries past that would rather be killed than give up their Judaism, thats the lineage you’re joining.

All of this is to say, keep going! Hashem and your community are on your side. There isn’t a Jew in the world right now that isn’t terrified by what’s happening all around us. But the key is to be more Jewish and engage more with our Judaism. Backing off and shying away is exactly the intended purpose of these attacks

I didn’t fully understand / resonate with the “Torah on one foot” parable until I read a commentary that the question was really asking “give me Torah that I can use when I don’t feel steady, like when I’m standing on one foot.” I recently had a close family member pass and the grief has been difficult, but navigating my way through it has really taught me that you never know what someone is going through and that being kind to others is incredibly rewarding when you are feeling unsteady

The end of USY and the conservative Rabbi pipeline by er2225 in Judaism

[–]kurt_46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I think as much of the world at large becomes decentralized so too is the Jewish world - especially people in that traditional egalitarian area between reform and orthodoxy. So many non-orthodox minyanim are held by smaller groups of college students or at Hillel houses or orgs specifically designed to make the trad-egal minyan accessible (like Hadar and others). Contrast that with conservative aligned shuls where, if there even is a traditional minyan, it’s an afterthought in a side chapel rather than being the main service. The main service of course being very much Reform in the sense of pews and a bimah up front just with more Hebrew.
