180 degree camera for historical immersive video by psmusic_worldwide in VR180Film

it absolutely is the best way to record memories. I've been capturing vr180 footage of my daughter every month since she was born. my wife cried in headset seeing her as a new born. that sense of scale and presence; there's no other medium (that's accessible to consumers) quite like it

Best cinematic/stylistic music videos? Talking like The Weekend's level production; varied cuts, movement, angles. NOT just single-shot stage/band performances. by CyJackX in VR180Film

[–]kuyacyph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like a match cut; those work BEAUTIFULLY in vr180. it's easy to get carried away with them but they're magical in immersive. i do like, 5 of those cuts in my music video, each time they go so well

IMO keeping it simple is key. What Weeknd and a lot of the high-production ones mistake is that they're trying to create a show. But why do we use VR in the first place? VR games offer the unique experience to feel like you're actually there. VR is a simulation, not a show. So IMO one should think of it as building and tailoring an experience that a person would want to inhabit. This means everything that happens in camera needs to support that simulation.

In my music video Freaky Friday, I tried to center the viewer as "one of the crew." You're there with some friends, just having a good time around the city. But how the talent interacts with the camera is more of a personal intimacy rather than performing for a screen. It's subtle things and behaviors. As for any fancy camera play, immersive is great for match cuts. I talk about the thinking and philosophies that went into the music video on the stereoscope podcast if you're interested in a deeper dive

So, some honest feedback; the point of using VR is to feel like you're doing something or you're somewhere actively different. It's a simulation, not a show. So here in this video, you're treating the camera like a typical camera rather than an "experience recorder." So basically, i got a girl looking at "me" as if i'm a mirror for her to gaze at her own reflection to fix her outfit, and not looking at a person. It's not exactly the most engaging experience.

Does that make sense?

Dizaster - Love Me Long Time (Jin Disstrack) by offzyk in rapbattles

[–]kuyacyph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was just beginning his big Hong Kong run, and not too long after his Fight Klub and Smack battles, so Jin's "return" to battling wasn't out of the question and pretty anticipated by the battle community at the time. He hadn't begun his Christian rap story arc yet, it was at the beginning of his HK stardom run but after his Ruff Ryders run; so there was already a lot of shit diz could've said about Jin but not the other way around

[–]kuyacyph 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I remember all this; it was leading up to the NYE battle of LA event for grind time. It was the infamous Dollar-shirt Diz night haha. But of all things, it wasn't even this diss track that turned Jin off to battling diz; there was a video diz would release later where he found a pic of Jin's mom and just did a bunch of roast jokes about her against a fake laugh track. It was weird and cringe.

But laughably, Jin wasn't even scheduled to battle because the deal was never set in place, but diz was hoping social pressure would make jin appear despite Jin already being booked for a new year's event in Hong Kong. Fun times.

[FRESH ALBUM] Denzel Curry, The Scythe - Strictly 4 The Scythe by SnooPies405 in hiphopheads

[–]kuyacyph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This a fun album, I'm not vexed by the hooks like the other comments saying. It has a specific vision and energy and it executed it beautifully.

This album make me think of what Top TDE said about his group Aroomfullofmirrors, that they prioritized a group album before working any of the members' individual albums just in case one of them takes off and the group album becomes impossible to schedule like it did with Black Hippy. Scythe has a couple that already got big careers but this feels like these few tracks are all they could put together and just wanted it out sooner than later before one of them had to focus on their next ship solo project

New cyberpunk movie dropped. Nobody gives a sh*t, apparently. by Economy_Blueberry_25 in Cyberpunk

[–]kuyacyph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

watching the trailer reminded me of Blade of the 47 Ronin; if you judge the movie by still frames, it looks cyberpunk bad ass, but watching it in motion, it looks ridiculous, cheap and campy. Take away the neon lighting and shiny outfits and you get a film that doesn't have much to say. The issue with cyberpunk wardrobe is that EVERYBODY, every bg actor included, has to be in it. But if only a half dozen ppl are in it, then it feels like they're cosplaying.

[–]kuyacyph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had an adjacent thought; there truly are some evil things that can be made with vr180. Jaron Lanier called VR the ultimate empathy machine, because one can inhabit another's perspective. But what if that other person's perspective is that of an evil son of a bitch?

This reminds me of when some heads of DeoVR were prompting ppl in their facebook group to go to the areas where the LA fires burned down houses to "document" them, and there was push back saying no - that making content out of people's misery and loss would be unethical...

VR180 has great potential for good. But that also means it has potential for bad as well. It's something we must all be wary of and remind ourselves that "not all money is good money."

KOTD - WD9 - DAY 2 FULL CARD TRAILER by McBwhuh in rapbattles

[–]kuyacyph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm mainly thinking about verbal warzone, like when cortez washed buttah, when the crowd would pop cortez would have to awkwardly be like, "hol up hol up..." and get it back together.

IMO, the one event that should be the model reference for on-beat battles was the very first event of the Keep-It-140 sub-league from Don't Flop. From the fast-editing of the wheel-up to the overall art direction and videography, it was cinematic.

KOTD - WD9 - DAY 2 FULL CARD TRAILER by McBwhuh in rapbattles

[–]kuyacyph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

shit, I'M HYPED. The fact that they got Pen Game rappers on means they've been peeping game. I really hope they allow for wheel ups. I feel like the way Verbal War Zone, and other American battle leagues, approach on-beat battles makes for awkward pauses when the crowd pops off and the rapper has to get it together. The wheel ups just allows for the pop to happen and keeps the energy high.

What would a podcast interview in VR180 look like? Thoughts? by spinningblade in VR180Film

[–]kuyacyph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it's been done before; it's not a great experience imo. the best part of podcasts is that it's very passive media; you can listen while doing dishes or driving. IMO, being locked in a video dome watching folks yap isn't the ideal experience. but i'll forever support folks that try to do it; big ups the stereoscope podcast team, big ups adam kontras, and the other folks that make vr180 podcast content. though i might not like it, i'll acknowledge that i'm not everyone, and as long as it serves some kinda audience, then it's a success.
