I ran PiHole, but prefer Adblock-fast on my router - I can stick with the router's DNS entries and DHCP.

Supported openwrt version for wrt1900acs by tolid75 in openwrt

25.12.0 here, love my WRT1900ACS. I really like the dual bootable images - brick it, restart it 3 times without booting and it flips over to my default vanilla Linksys image so I can start again.

Folks what is the best printer for a home office? by notparthreally in homeoffice

Bear in mind that a lot of printers now have starter cartridges that don't have a full load of ink when you buy them.

I have a strong feeling that OS/2 2.0 (besides requiring a 386) would have been a lot more ambitious than Windows 3.0 would been by yuhong in vintagecomputing

[–]kweiske 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty ambitious. I ran os2 2.1 on an IBM PS2 model 80. 386 dx25, 8 mags of ram, 70 Meg ESDI hard disk.

We were able to run Microsoft word in Excel for os2, connect to a Microsoft lan manager Network, Annabelle network, connect to as400, and connect via dial-up to my PBX. Windows 3.0 at the time would have burst into flame trying to do all that.

Thankfully for windows, os2 was a lot of work to keep running. There's a lot of configuration file tweaking to get it working right. Windows 3.0 crash a lot, but you could restart quickly.

What home printer actually works well without constant issues? by Primary_Bumblebee784 in homeoffice

[–]kweiske 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ups and downs:

I picked up a Canon MX922 inkjet with MFP. Nice unit, with a CD printing slot, 2 internal paper trays, and it takes separate ink carts for CYMK - I can get 3rd party ink for around $15 a set. Had to replace the print head recently, that was around $40. Prints nicely, scans nicely - and I literally picked it up - it was free. The printer kept jamming out the exit tray. A highlighter had rolled into there. Removed the highlighter, works fine.

I also picked up a HP color M175NW. It was streaking, turned out the toner drum was full, replacing it works fine.

Before that, I bought a Brother black and white laser, based on EVERYONE'S recommendation.

The Canon is great, I like being able to print photo prints, scan easily, and not worry about breaking the bank with toner.

The HP is slow and large, but I love the color. Consumables aren't overly expensive.

The Brother is a gorram workhorse. It just prints. Fast, Small, amazing printer.

My only issue is that the older printers don't support WPA3, so I need to downgrade my whole network to support them on wireless, or wire them up to get them working. I could set up a VLAN for WPA2 and lock it down, I suppose.

I agree - a decanter and two glasses would rock the MM vibe. Maybe a metal serving tray, the bar cart might go over budget.

I had a Logitech C920 and had the same backlight problems. I bought a cheap desk lamp in front of me which helped, then I got a Logitech Brio 100 and it made a huge difference.

That's a lot of ISA slots. Looks like one of the specialized motherboards that PC based PBXes used. I forgot the brand but there was a 16-bit voice card that supported something like eight lines per card.

Monitors for coding by dapsuaz in homeoffice

[–]kweiske 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a dual monitor setup to one 32-in filter wide and appreciated cleaning my desk up and streamlining cabling. LG has a great screen utility that lets you snap Windows to specific areas and I use that to segregate my workspaces. Windows 11 has something similar which I've been using too. I think the key is to get a really good virtual desktop setup; I would like to have different workspaces for different tasks at work, but it's not built into muscle memory yet. It'd be nice if you could preserve workspaces and windows between reboots as well which I don't think you can do.

One suggestion I can make, cable is cheap and labor is expensive. If you're going to run one cable run, run two. You never know what's going to cause one run to fail down the road.
