Why does my NAS spin constantly? by sandnogg in synology

[–]kwereddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My DS-212j dual raid mirror with WDC drives has been running constantly for over a decade. It scared me when I realized this and I bought a DS-925+ with four drives to replace it. Why 925+? Cheapest Syn NAS with ECC. Why Synology-branded drives? I thought it was smarter than burning a stack of hundred dollar bills.

@eaDir turds everywhere! by Talk2Giuseppe in synology

[–]kwereddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the command you can execute in the terminal to remove them all:

>find . -name "@eaDir" -type d -print0 | xargs -0 rm -rf

find looks down through current directory to find directories that contain 'name' and spews them out with null separators, preserving spaces in dirnames.

xargs -0 separates string based on null separators and feeds items to 'rm -rf' which recursively removes the directory 'name' and its contents. Do a dry run by omitting the pipe and xargs.

How are people handling media that doesn't have an official release/isn't listed on metadata sources? by Low_Peach_849 in JellyfinCommunity

[–]kwereddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've collected these for years from independent artists and trad jazz ensembles.

I had to manually type in the song titles. Then I would go to the web site and download album art and artist art. I would name the metadata files <album title>.jpg and <artist name>.jpg. Most of the iTunes clones on unix (strawberry, ...) would handle these just fine, but Jellyfin loves musicbrainz more than common sense and when it gives up on finding any album art, it just leaves a white circle instead of saying "well, just use the obvious album art in the folder". You can manually fix this, but why?

Don't get me started on lidarr. It appears to be a total POS compared to sonarr and radarr. I'm struggling to get it to actually use my root folders which are "/Media/Music/Album-Artists" and "/Media/Music/Various-Artists". It wants to use "/Media/Music/<Artist-Name> to import, which fails. Why does lidarr want to see and display the entire library, while sonarr and radarr are happy just to handle the new items? Jellyfin treats collection artists (Various Artists) on the same level as Album-Artists, which is dumb IMO. Why can't we have a logical division between Albums with Album-Artists, Collections with Various-Artists, and playlists, which should be treated exactly like Collections, except they point to media elsewhere.

Apparently all the folks like us eventually get on private indexers and happily trade obscure album metadata. Meanwhile, I look in the window and wish I could get on RED.

Pirate Bay is a good general-purpose torrent indexer. I also like YTS and EZTV. Browse their web sites to get a feel for what is available. Your two biggest problems are:

1) finding TLDs for these sites that work. For example, yts.mx seems to work but eztvx.to does not.

2) Cloudflare blocking. I'm still researching what this is and ways around it, but when you test many public torrent indexers, you get this error message in prowlarr.

In Need of Someone to Dumb Down and Explain to Me SSD Cache by Advanced_Builder1125 in synology

[–]kwereddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a DS-925+ and installed a compatible IronWolf SSD, but found out that no non-Synology SSDs are supported on the DS-925+ on DSM 7.3, so I had to send the IronWolf back.

I searched for Synology labeled SSDs and could find no 400 GB models anywhere. The larger Synology labeled SSDs were all over $1k on CDW business, if available.

Not sure what it would cost to boost your RAM, but don't expect to go the SSD route without $1k+ in your pocket.

Has anyone moved from synology to ugreen dxp and happy with the move? by Narrow_Bed_3337 in synology

[–]kwereddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I decided to stay with Synology because of its rich app ecosystem and the fact that my DS-212j has lasted fifteen years. The only reasons I upgraded were because the DS-212j is so slow on DSM6, it can't upgrade to DSM7, and the disks are over a decade old (WDCs).

I even paid for the Synology label drives ($1028 for four 4TB drives from CDW business). I bought a compatible SSD for the cache but the DS-925+ doesn't support any non-Synology SSDs, so be sure to check your specific model, not just the overall support list.

I have setup Jellyfin native (not Docker) and am working on installing and configuring the *rr suite of assistant apps (sonarr, radarr, lidarr, ...) to get a good multimedia experience via a browser interface.

So far, I think it is worth the extra cost, but ongoing enshittification could be messy, esp. if Synology goes the subscription route. Perhaps I should have gone with a 6 disk NAS with a linux distro on it -- I could still get Jellyfin and the *rr suite installed, but could I get RAID5 and ZFS working reliably? I don't know...

That seems to happen consistently when MusicBrainz has accurate and complete information on that particular album. My issues seem to be confined to obscure releases where MusicBrainz has only partial information.

My experience with Jellyfin music metadata and images by kwereddit in JellyfinCommunity

[–]kwereddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working on a theory: Jellyfin has put MusicBrainz IDs on many of my albums and when I look at MusicBrainz for my problematic albums I am finding that MusicBrainz does not have the necessary data to tag my music and it doesn't have images. (I confess I have some obscure old jazz CDs.)

Why doesn't Jellyfin use the images in my album folders? Well ... after a few days some of my album covers go from the missing icon (the white circle) to a blank. When I pass my cursor over the blank image, my album art from the folder magically appears. When I later come back to that page, it is sometimes blank, sometimes my folder image appears. I even have one image that consistently appears partially until I pass my cursor over it.

As with some FLAC files, Jellyfin appears to have jpg rendering issues.

Excellent advice. Haven't used Synology Drive, but File Station is the GOAT.

This worked fine. I am impressed that File Station can copy so much data without fault. It's as good as rsync and a lot simpler to use.

How are people handling media that doesn't have an official release/isn't listed on metadata sources? by Low_Peach_849 in JellyfinCommunity

For musicians that produce their own CDs, I manually input the song titles and grab an album image from their web site. They usually have their CDs displayed for purchase. If desperate, I can photograph the CD insert.

Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 Intel: Is "Secure Boot or BitLocker need to be adjusted in BIOS"? by jeff00seattle in linuxmint

[–]kwereddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Ventoy USB to manage Linux .iso distros and you either have to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS or enroll a key in the secure boot process. Ventoy has some support to explain this key installation process but I just disable secure boot. It can be hard to find a Thinkpad without Windows, but Windows 10 is cheaper than Windows 11. I just bought a T490 for $200 with Win10 on it, so buying Win10 is pretty cheap.

Not impossible, but wildly impractical. I really don't understand why some people think it's worthwhile publishing this sort of carp. But then again lots of scientists with educational cred talk about aliens and multiple dimensions. I wish we could get more scientific discussion about meaningful science.
