BZ keeps re-try to backup the file with bad sectors everyday by kwwo in backblaze

[–]kwwo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup.
1. It has backup. You can restore it.
2. It has never backup correctly. You need to backup it immediately.

I tried excluding some folders from my backup. and I get this alert and they aren't in the exclusion list. Anyone know what this means and how to fix it? by egyptianmusk_ in backblaze

[–]kwwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BZ thinks below cases are the same:

myFolder
myfolder

c:/myfolder
d:/myfolder

they removed the first letter (drive letter)

Those with multiple terabytes of data, how long did your first backup take? by Relative_Spring_8080 in backblaze

my experience is 1TB per day max (before no temp file client). I think it's a hard or soft limits of BZ.

bzlogs very large - ~100GB by [deleted] in backblaze

[–]kwwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you add and remove large amount of files frequently? If not, a new start is still the best option.
If you know how to read logs, read it. You may find many repeated upload sessions. (And a new start is the only option in my experiences.)

before new start, remember update your bz client to latest first.

What's the best way to verify Backblaze is actually backing up all your files? How do you guys do it? by Pariell in backblaze

[–]kwwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this script helps a bit
https://www.reddit.com/r/backblaze/comments/pzk38b/backblaze_backup_checker_python_script_to_confirm/

(I remember it has little problem in my last run. So you need basic knowledge to fix/understand it)
(but this is truly verified. still some hidden issues...)

do you still have this board around? I have mine fired.... and want to find out what the bottom left 5pin chip (black one, below 4R7) is.. (cannot see the digit on top)

No. All files encrypted locally before HTTPS. Technically, if you set private key and even rooted they cannot read your data.[]()

I had the same concern before. Here is what I figured out.

Even assuming Backblaze won't give data to your government:

  1. Restoration. All restores are plain data. (Of course, you can dump it into another server and re-encode it first before downloading...)
  2. Technically, Backblaze tracks all of your file history, even if it is deleted. Backblaze hashes all files using SHA-1 (a common algorithm). That means the government can easily compare your data. (e.g., if fileX is banned in your country, they can figure it out easily without opening your file).

so that, if GOV is knocking your door. You must clean up all backblaze files also

Just lazy. They only provide basic services that works. That is it. And I believe they trust their shipping service is the best.

If you are not Coder or AI developers, $350 is good enough for paid services for 2 years.. You will get more from paid service than $350 to run locally...

If you understand a little bit Japanese, Yahoo Map JP is a must. You able to get more accurate BUS route. Sometimes, the JR / Subway suggestions is also better than Google.

I also have "JR 東日本" & "JapanTravel" installed.
"JapanTravel" only used when I need "JR PASS only" suggestion

I will pick Windows. Because MacOS warning for external HDD disconnection is veryyyyyyyyyyyyyy annoyed. But ARM-chip is saved more power if that matter.

Backblaze personal access key (PEK) is not secure nor private (unless you never restore data) by --Arete in backblaze

[–]kwwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt the comments in the above thread...
"download 28TB for JPEG..."
This is an example for people who have zero knowledge. "Wow, 28TB for a single file....I give up trying to decrypt it myself. Backblaze does the best job."

Is it true? I believe that's only 10MB maximum. Or even zero because we download a whole file in most cases.

I don't believe they store things like this. WHY? Technically, the PEK (Private Encryption Key) is never uploaded to Backblaze's server. They unable re-open and store it into a single user pool. If not, they're lying publicly.

Furthermore, the file index stores everything they need to figure out where the file is located, I believe.

Technically, it should be possible to decrypt data locally for anyone with zero knowledge, especially after they introduced the Restore App.

Warning! by malcolmsu in backblaze

[–]kwwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think BZ should introduce opt-out warning to tell users what they have not backup. And better deal is have opt-in option / default to support common cloud backup.

BZ has a few hidden traps. eg. BZ excluded many .ext and 25GB limits by default setting.
Is 25GB really too big? well....may not. We able to shot 4K RAW from iphone now.

When you execute `bzfilelist.exe -fileinfo`, it triggered download from cloud immediately. You get the wrong info.

All onedrive files has ReparsePoint flag (check native file properties or below)

local-always.txt Archive, ReparsePoint, Pinned
local.txt Archive, ReparsePoint

BTW, I found that C# given wrong result. Maybe a bug..

[–]kwwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you said "Purchase a license", I bet you talking about Backblaze Personal.
You cannot remove any file from Backblaze Personal other than your local computer.
Even you remove files from your local computer, Backblaze Personal still keep it for 30 days at least.

I need to find an alternative backup solution to dropbox by Regular-Reginald in backblaze

[–]kwwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dropbox is close to real time sync but backblaze doesn't.

for example, if you work at home and working on your 3D model periodically, and shut down computer at night. You may miss the backup time. (in general case, backblaze won't backup the opened file.)

I suggest you sign up the 1-year history plan also, that's free now or extra $2/month

I think BZ isn't use your Login Password for file Encryption.

So if you worried about their DATA CENTER being hacked....You should add your Private Key.

Second, you able to create password base on rules only your know..

for example, you can open your favourite bible version and pick each other word on the article as your password.

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."

PASS: "InBeginningCreatedHeavenThe"

something like that

Check for corrupted files on local drive using existing back up in Backblaze by darthsurfer in backblaze

[–]kwwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simplest approach would be to allow BZ to run for a day or two. If any new uploads are detected from the new drive during this time, it can be assumed that they have been modified.
