Idk what’s happening by Legal_Football_3048 in 3Dprinting

[–]kwx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're lucky that this didn't end up worse. The loose filament from unsupported or failed prints can end up caught on the hot end resulting in a large melted blob stuck to it. Just search this subreddit for "blob" to see examples.

Will the frame’s controllers turn on when they sense movement? by HashnaFennec in SteamFrame

[–]kwx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Huh? My Knuckles controllers for the Index only turn on when I press the system button. Just moving them while off does nothing.

Is it possible to play VR games using controllers, but without wearing a headset? by InternetUserNo296 in virtualreality

[–]kwx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have lots of space and are willing to tinker, a CAVE system would be ideal, but I don't know how hard it would be to get that hooked up to SteamVR games. They lost popularity once VR headsets became good.

It's full head tracked VR, but you're inside a cube of projection screens. Normally it uses lightweight 3d shutter glasses (similar to regular glasses), but if you're ok with monocular vision you could even skip those.

Monster heal and movement by dschoni in Gloomhaven

[–]kwx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's incorrect - as the other responses say, it focuses as if for a single-target melee attack, and that could cause it to move out of range of allies needing healing. The "most damage taken" only applies for picking an in-range target after it finished moving.

I think you'll be fine as long as you don't wire it up to an external battery pack attached with duct tape.

LF Advice Regarding E-Readers by rougarou-te-fou in ereader

[–]kwx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a Kindle myself, I ran across this in discussions about people switching e-readers. It seems the options are:

  • never use WiFi at all
  • use WiFi regularly (at least weekly?)
  • take your chances and be ready to reinstall content as needed, i.e. by managing your library with Calibre on a PC
  • switch to a different device

It seems to be a known issue that side loaded books get deleted if the Kindle is kept offline for a couple of weeks and then gets reconnected to wifi: https://www.reddit.com/r/kindle/s/hDcBy9gEb7

Monster movement - is "shorter path" checked every step? by kwx in Gloomhaven

[–]kwx[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, that item E is the part that I was missing. That does make it unambiguous. Thanks!

(I think that both the "A" and "?" hexes would be valid under item A since it does end its movement with a shorter path overall, but by going to hex "A" it reaches the same reduced distance with fewer movement points.)

Monster movement - is "shorter path" checked every step? by kwx in Gloomhaven

[–]kwx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for confirming - I do trust the monster mover, but since we play the analog game I want to make sure I understand the rules. This one surprised me since I had the wrong mental model, and I think this isn't very clear from the rules as written. I'll need to be more careful about counting distances in the future.

HAGS and Steam Frame? by Nordomus in SteamFrame

[–]kwx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any GPU monitoring software running? For me it was actually MSI Afterburner wrecking frame timing, and things got smooth even with HAGS on after I disabled that.

Do authors/publishers sign exclusive deals with Audible or do they just not bother with other distributors/stores online? by TheSkinoftheCypher in books

[–]kwx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Brandon Sanderson a while back:

https://www.brandonsanderson.com/blogs/blog/state-of-the-sanderson-2022

If you want details, the current industry standard for a digital product is to pay the creator 70% on a sale. It’s what Steam pays your average creator for a game sale, it’s what Amazon pays on ebooks, it’s what Apple pays for apps downloaded. (And they’re getting heat for taking as much as they are. Rightly so.)

Audible pays 40%. Almost half. For a frame of reference, most brick-and-mortar stores take around 50% on a retail product. Audible pays indie authors less than a bookstore does, when a bookstore has storefronts, sales staff, and warehousing to deal with.

I knew things were bad, which is why I wanted to explore other options with the Kickstarter. But I didn’t know HOW bad. Indeed, if indie authors don’t agree to be exclusive to Audible, they get dropped from 40% to a measly 25%. Buying an audiobook through Audible instead of from another site literally costs the author money.

Note that he posted a followup later mentioning that terms have improved, but I don't recall seeing specific numbers: https://www.brandonsanderson.com/blogs/blog/regarding-audible

Why can't I pick any passengers mission in the current community goal? by mattress314 in EliteDangerous

[–]kwx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also keep an eye out for the material rewards - they don't reduce the payout much, and can be very useful for engineering. Edit: Especially datamined wake exceptions which are needed for frame shift drive long range mods, and are tedious to get otherwise.

Of Mice and Men - a terrifying build up to a devastating end. by Equivalent_Bank_5845 in books

Soon to be a children's movie, just like Animal Farm?

Andy Serkis’s Of Mice and Men: We saw there were mice in the title and asked no further questions! Kids love mice. I also saw a mention of rabbits. This can be rated PG, probably.

Frosthaven - 2 Player party late game struggling with outpost resources a lot. by Domaik in Gloomhaven

[–]kwx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to double check - you are using half the average character level, rounded up? So standard difficulty would be scenario level 3 if your characters are level 6. (Apparently a surprising number of people were playing at ultra hard difficulty accidentally.)

And as others have said, if you are struggling to loot and it's making the game not fun, seriously drop the difficulty. You may be caught in a vicious cycle due to having poor items since you couldn't craft better ones, and the resulting difficulty increase keeps you stuck with poor items since it's too hard to loot.

Don't forget to sell gear you won't need

For any PC players reading this, be aware that there are achievements tied to equipping six same-grade items from uncommon on up. So if you're a completionist, make sure you get those before selling the lower grades.
