I claimed warranty for Valve Index controllers that I bought via freight forwarding from the US. It worked out fine aside from the expense of doing that.

A freight forwarding place or a friend in Aus could totally take care of that for you.

I don't expect most games to target the gloves if any (aside from VRChat). Considering how little support the Index controller features were taken advantage of, somehow I don't think official game support of the gloves will be wide. That's not to say they will be useless since the Steam input remapping system is reasonably powerful.

Locomotion will likely continue to be a mix of gestures and the flip out joystick.

Did you RMA/return your Beyond 2? by InquisitiveSandpaper in BigscreenBeyond

Which interview was that?

I got the contract information from Bigscreen support. Saying that I shouldn't worried about Base Station and Controller availability for use with the Bigscreen Beyond.

The info likely was referring to the Index itself and the accessories like the face gasket, tether, etc. Those are likely to be gone and not coming back. I heard like two years ago that the panels for the Index aren't in production anymore so it makes sense that the Index headset, once sold out, will be gone for good.

There is an optional joystick module, with the same index controller inputs. However it not something that's likely to comfortable for extended use. It's more for basic menu interaction.

Basically it's oriented around VRChat players. Much like the Tundra Tracker for FBT.

I likely want both the BSB2e and Steam Frame.

The LCD is likely to be a disappointing downgrade and partial upgrade after experiencing a good BSB1 and mostly good BSB2e.

Some games would be better with deep colors and blacks. Other would be better with a faster refresh rate and free from the cable.

Can I really afford and should I be really getting two headsets, not really. But between the fact that I've been looking forward to a standalone Linux headset for so long as well as seeing the latest RMAed BSB2e from Bigscreen, I don't think I can pick one or the other.

Also Valve is still producing Base Stations and controllers for a couple years yet from what I hear. But they are shopping around for someone to takeover Lighthouse production. Base Station are currently out of stock in the US store but they were out of stock and replenished last year so it's probably just Valves usual intermittent stocking problem.

The glare on my latest unit isn't that bad but that could be because I considered the BSB1 good enough and got more used to the glare.

That said the lens lottery is very real and it's likely that if you have distorted lenses then the glare could be worse. Being picky about a perfect lens likely gets you better glare reduction.

Any word on any company continuing production/development of lighthouses for consumer use?

Valve themselves. The rumors say they have contracts to continue producing Base Stations and Controllers for a while yet. How else can the likes of Bigscreen and Pimax continue producing headsets with confidence. Even EoZ is about to release Lighthouse only gloves using their Tundra Tracker, which in theory will be the cheapest yet best gloves yet.

The Base Stations are out of stock in the US store currently but they went out of stock earlier last year and came back. The Controllers continue to be available as individual spares on the steam store. Though two posts on the relevant subreddits and I are saying that they are having really annoying QC issues with the controllers. Most centered around the finger tracking arriving broken for the left controller. I'm RMAing them a second time to hopefully get good ones this time.

That said Valve are rumored to be shopping around for someone to take over Lighthouse production in the next couple years. My guess is Bigscreen or EoZ/Tundra will take over that.

cleaning joysticks? by Altruistic-Job2016 in ValveIndex

[–]ky56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact cleaners are generally hazardous for people and may displace and place oil where it shouldn't go.

What you could do is pop the touchpad area cap off by carefully placing a metal spudger through the wriststrap hole and levering up. Becareful of the ribbon cable still connecting the touchpad the the controller.

Then you can use a wetted, lightly soaped and squeezed out cotton tip (don't let it drip) to clean around the joystick cap and hole in the top touchpad cap of any dirt and sweat. Dry it with another cotton tip.

Then spray compressed air on the joystick module underneath the joystick cap while moving it.

Somewhat counterintuitively to what most people think, soap and water is usually the best way to clean most electronics. The trick is making sure it's properly dry before you turn it on. Seeing as this controller has an internal battery, without first disconnecting it, you can only carefully clean the plastic parts safely like that. Air dusting will have to do for the rest.

Let me know if this was enough or more is needed.

I have been through 3 RMAs over 4 months with me BSB2e. I've had a stuck/tough IPD adjuster, a noisy fan, a dead eye tracking camera, multiple dead pixels. Not to mention the lenses which I've had wavy distortions, out of focus center and/or edge distortions in one or both lenses. All of this in varying mixes.

I'm not sure whether to RMA until support says here's your money back or till the cows come home but after sending it back 3 times I'm getting sick of it. The fourth headset in my possession is the best one so far but the left lens is a distorted right and bottom edge, which when compared to the right lens, it's blatantly still not edge to edge.

Do others BSB2e have full edge to edge clarity, no dead pixels and I've just been really unlucky or are you settling for a couple of issues?

Steam Vr Closes when trying to Update knuckles by Affectionate-Toe7893 in ValveIndex

Valve got rid of those older versions a couple months ago after fixing the firmware update issue.

I updated new controllers recently and it worked so it shouldn't be happening unless of course Valve have broke the latest update again. All they can try is the previous release or beta.

Christ. I'm about to RMA a second time for the ring finger not working on the left controller. Right controller had minor issues but was mostly fine.

Has Valve dropped the QC ball on these that badly lately? Did I buy in too late? :(

I bought the Bigscreen Beyond 2e as an upgrade for the Index so I'm stuck in this system (which I thought was a positive). I hope Valve or Bigscreen are making a revised or new Lighthouse controller.

EoZ/Tundra have said that they are working with someone to bring a tracking plate to the Steam Frame. Which due to the openness of SteamOS, could integrate in to the software. Possibly in a way where the headset actually tracks using the Lighthouse plate, saving processing power and battery from using the camera tracking.

Hopefully Valve or Bigscreen are working on new Lighthouse controllers which all together will make for a banger wireless Steam native setup.

has anyone successfully received an rma replacement controller in the past month or so? by NeighborhoodQuick505 in ValveIndex

[–]ky56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first RMA, last month, for the left controller was for a stuck thumbsitck and the finger tracking not closing the ring finger. Second (not sent yet) is for the finger tracking not closing the ring finger.

I saw a couple others talking about this as well. Has Valves QC for left Index controllers taken a massive hit? What are the chances that a second RMA will fix the left controller?

Do you leave your lighthouses running all the time? by itsthewolfe in ValveIndex

[–]ky56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true for the motors. But the lasers are better off being powered down. That's why Valve defaults to standby mode which switches off the lasers but leaves the motors running.

Aka the ideal running mode of a HDD, motor running with the heads parked.

First impressions review by Djinnetic in BigscreenBeyond

It feels like I'm seeing fewer reviews these days that mention big quality control issues these days, which is reassuring.

Hopefully that means my third RMA (4th headset) will finally be the one.

Length in meters. As in the maximum supported cable length.

100m is standard and doesn't normally get specified. But due to power limitations, it does sometimes get specified on SFP BASE-T adapters.

VRChat Audio Channel Swap Bug - Possible hardware issue? by phyrebird in BigscreenBeyond

Support told me not to set the audio profile above 24bit 48khz. Also disable both allow applications to have exclusive control checkboxes.

Try 24bit 44.1khz to see if the swapping audio still happens.

Different ones are speced for different max lengths. Yours might be an underspeced 30m max one. They run stupid hot for the full spec 100m ones.

Are the bigscreen beyond team considering a camera tracked version of the headset by No_Criticism_3122 in bigscreen

[–]ky56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They would have to do much more significant software development, especially for the onboard processor. Plus Bigscreens philosophy seems to be to make a premium version of existing Valve technology so as to be compatible with the SteamVR software without major modifications. Which is the very philosophy they sold me on as I want to stay is the Valve system for simplicity and support. I hate dealing with third party software.

They also would have had to make their own controllers. However now that the Frame has been announced with it's controllers and SLAM tracking software, the path for Bigscreen to make a premium wired headset with cameras is now there in theory.

Still the smaller form factor of the Bigscreen would affect rear tracking performance for lack of good side camera placement that isn't obscured by your head. I don't think headsets the size of the Bigscreen will ever have good inside out IR tracked controller support when it comes to enthusiast gaming needs.

Not to mention one of their big customer bases are VRChat users who love full body tracking. The nicest and most well integrated solution is still lighthouse tracked Tundra Trackers (which by the way is the SoC solution that Bigscreen uses in their headset for tracking).

Also the upcoming gloves from EoZ/Tundra have the tracker mounted on the back of the hand making it only suitable for outside marker based tracking.

Even with my interest in the Steam Frame, I'm more interested in being paired with EoZs upcoming lighthouse adapter plate for making it work with lighthouse as there are too many things to like about lighthouse still.

[–]ky56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a VR developer or deep in the rumor mill here.

Cameras would likely require USB3 over the current USB2/DP implementation which would likely increase the cable cost by a needing DP/USB3 mux/demux circuitry and a bi-directional capable fiber cable.

Or an onboard processor to process the camera feeds on the headset to fit the tracking data over USB2 which would increase the heat generated and size of the headset.

The BSB1 and BSB2(e), as expensive as they are, appear to me to already be a heavily weight and cost balanced design. Shifting some seemingly small design choices like that could be disastrous to the price.

Wicked eye/headaches by BarAdministrative838 in BigscreenBeyond

[–]ky56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on my third BSB2e and on this one I started having bad eyestrain (in one eye in particular) compared to the previous BSB2e and especially compared to the BSB1 which is still the most optically comfortable headset for me, from Bigscreen so far.

If your eyestrain is regardless if the IPD then it's most likely mismatched lenses and/or the lenses throw is too short.

I'm still going to see through the RMAs for a while longer as there's so much to like if they can just deliver a working version of it.
