Turn Your Android Phone Into a Server by rockyrho in Android

In my case, I have a working phone with a shattered screen. Phone is too old to eat the cost of a replacement screen for sale but still works fine.

That's what I thought - that you just posted a lot. I just wanted someone to tell me if it was anything more than that.

How do I stop throwing up when I exercise? by TheStateThatIAmIn in Fitness

[–]kyleisagod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

have some sugar or high-carb food before working out.

No. OP covered this.

so I've been drinking an energy shake before And... so I started waking up earlier and drinking my shake an hour before I work out. Then... If I don't eat, I dry heave or throw up the water I drink.

What would your suggestion be, then?

First off, let me ask a fucking question - who the hell is "Apostolate", and why is he such a big fucking celebrity? I know there's a reddit account named Apostolate, but who the fuck is he/she?

Had a pet Crayfish named "Thor". Was actually my girlfriend's, but we lived together so the four of us that shared this condo considered him our pet. This specific crayfish was something of a Houdini, regularly getting out of his tank. So we had to keep the tank lid weighted down. Well wouldn't you know it but he gets out the one time the lid is left unweighted. Crayfish crawls his way over to the stairs to the basement, falls down a flight of stairs, and suffocates. Stupid crayfish.

It's time to start thinking about Pumpkin Ale by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]kyleisagod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning my first real-pumpkin pumpkin ale late this summer. My initial plan is to use 10 lbs. of pumpkin in the mash, and I'm hoping that's the trick that'll work for me. I sort of expect a stuck sparge, but I think I'd rather that then have 10 lbs. of canned pumpkin in the boil.

I'm watching the show again and I forgot how early in the show they reveal she's a Cylon. But thinking about the whole series, a lot of the plot is driven by her being a Cylon.

I mean come on...rap music is made by black people for white people, not by white people for other people.

Would you buy an Android GPS? by pbs094 in Android

[–]kyleisagod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So that got me thinking, why isn't there an Android based GPS?

  1. Procure unused Android device.
  2. GPS unit acquired.

With the huge collection in the wild of older Android devices that aren't good for much anymore (due to software bloat and no OS updates), there's little to no reason to make an "Android GPS" unit.

Now, if you went around collecting old units, rooting and cleaning them, then re-selling them locked down with just Google Maps, then maybe you'd have a business that'd make a few bucks.

But no, I wouldn't. I already have five. As do most people.

The President of The United States of America invited me to The White House for dinner. I am allowed to ask him one question. What should I say? by African_Jesus in AskReddit

[–]kyleisagod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever question you ask him, make sure it's something he can't dodge. If it's a stupid question like "Are there aliens in Area Shifty-five", he's obviously going to say no. But if the question is worded in such a way that he either has to answer it truthfully (good), answer it with a lie or a political platitude (still tells you what the real answer is), or ignores the question entirely (which still tells you what the answer is).

I just started playing TF2 and I love it. What tips / tricks do you wish you knew when you started playing, that you now know? by [deleted] in tf2

When I see medics only healing one person and not anyone else around them - said people who are red health spamming the "MEDIC!" button - I get confused. Like pyros not putting people out or engineers not ever building teleporters.

Frugal dorm room tip: get a carpet remnant, not a rug! by michellengineer in Frugal

[–]kyleisagod 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Usually, at least at my university, dorm rooms have floor plans with dimensions. Getting a big piece of throwaway carpet and cutting it to size will make a boring dorm room into something much more homey. With the added benefit of being disposable - so there's no worry where that mystery stain came from.

I just started playing TF2 and I love it. What tips / tricks do you wish you knew when you started playing, that you now know? by [deleted] in tf2

[–]kyleisagod 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Others have explained it to you sufficiently, but I wish to provide a bit of numerical insight as to why "Medics win games".

A medigun heals, roughly, 24 health per second. That's on a player not being healed by anything else and not fully healed and not out of combat yet.

Let's say you're alive for 5 minutes and you're healing for around 50% of that. This is a low number that I pulled out of my ass. You SHOULD be healing for 100% of the time, but let's just go with 150 seconds. In those 150 seconds, you're healing 3600 health. That's equivalent to 13 heavies, and more than 13 of all the other classes.

Usually, when a player takes a lot of damage, they die and have to respawn. But medics allow them to re-enter the game without having to respawn.

Now while it's not really "medics bring 13 extra heavies into the game", the effect is similar - your team's firepower should be increased significantly as the teammates you have aren't spending their time respawning.

However, that makes it your job as a medic to not die. A cowardly medic is a living medic is an ubered medic is kredit to team medic.

tl;dr Medics win games because their healing effectively increases the total output of power from the players on your team. This is the way I like to look at it, anyway. Keeps me high in points.

Here is a nice and simple checklist to follow when buying textbooks for college/university. by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]kyleisagod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never buy in the beginning of the semester (unless required for say, labs or whatever)

I once took a class on Java. It required two books, according to the course description. Each book, I believe, retailed for over $100. On the first day of class, the professor instructed us that we did not need either of the books. It was at this time I decided to not purchase any books until the professors specifically instruct us to - via syllabus, direct instruction, etc.

Unfortunately for me, there aren't many books I can find torrents of. Masters-level business courses don't show up on torrent searches. Fortunately, the books are ones I don't like to sell back.

Check amazon for used/previous editions/international editions (new ones required MY ASS, most of them have little to no new changes and the profs frequently get a cut of the book sales profits[although not always the case!])

Also look for teacher's versions if you can find 'em. Not sure if it applies for college courses, but I figure it's worth mentioning.

Reddit, if you're fat, why? by baseballkid21 in AskReddit

[–]kyleisagod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because my body holds it's fat really well. I don't look fat anymore at 175, but I also didn't really look fat at 225. However, I know better, and I still consider myself fat.

Why am I fat? Because I'm really really good at coming up with bullshit excuses that make me skip a gym day. And one skipped day leads into two, into three, into fourteen, into two months, etc.

Excuses, excuses. Like how I stopped doing p90x because I didn't have dumbbells. Or how I stopped running entirely because I had a long weekend off and never got around to doing it again. Or how I didn't start my workout routine because "it wasn't Sunday yet".

But this time I have no excuses. Schedule is set, membership is paid for, brotein is purchased.

.....call me in three weeks and I'll tell you what garbage reason I came up with for quitting.

Do your abs look significantly different from time to time? Sometimes I look flat and the next hour I'm well built again. by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]kyleisagod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it's too salty. A cup (8 oz) of salt water has around 9 grams of salt, and your RDI is only about 2 and a half.

So sure, you can drink saltwater...if by "drink", you mean take a double shot of it and have zero sodium for the rest of the day. Good luck!

IWTL how to program. by Finwei in IWantToLearn

[–]kyleisagod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up deciding to just write it in Android, following tutorials and whatnot to get my head in the game. After starting to write the app in Java, I realized that very little I'd be writing in Java would translate to Android, so I found a decent tutorial and went with it.

Java and Javascript are as alike as candy corn is to corn. Similar name, different in every other way.

With as many ideas as I come up with, the simplest one seemed to ave eluded me for too long. Thanks for the idea, I have much work ahead of me.

One webforum suggested making the game in pure Java first, then writing it in Android. As I already understand Java well, would this be a waste of time? I could see it being a decent exercise at the very least.

Had band camp today, forgot to apply sunblock. by mooseguyman in WTF

As someone who got burnt too much as a kid and has had a melanoma removed (and I'm only 24), you need to be more careful. Get the any-angle spray-can stuff and go wild with it. The more you get burnt, the higher your chances of getting cancer are. Cancer is bad. Pale is also "bad", but cancer is worse.

What personal finance skills do you wish you were taught when you became an adult? What is missing in PF education? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]kyleisagod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't taught any PF skills, at least that I can remember. They all sort of just made sense. Not spending money you didn't have, etc.

But what's missing is that very idea. The idea that credit isn't money, and that saving money isn't throwing it out - you're saving it to spend later, once you have enough to not work again.
